jaywink[m] I guess the OP left but I'd recommend taking a look at the Matrix protocol (https://matrix.org). It's an open protocol governed by the Matrix Foundation featuring lots of modern features including end2end encryption and cross-device state. It's also decentralized in the way that rooms and messages are not at whims to the location they have been created at.
