> <@jaywink:federator.dev> adding the domain to the preview is a pretty good mitigation tho

Friendica is doing so:

make sure you use anticonfusability rules when showing the domain though
#

ascii only or forbid mixed scripts.

The link previews could possibly be a problem from a very different side though.

There is a EU regulation that has to be put into law in the next few months regulating that companies have to pay for displaying preview content of news outlets.
#

It is totally unclear if this could affect distributed networks as well.
#

In the worst case different EU countries could have different flavours of this regulation.

Pretty sure this one -similarly to GDPR- also doesn't affect the fediverse except for commercial instances like pawoo.

At least pleroma already has a bunch of settings for controlling link previews so I think we're quite safe there.

the fundamental rights section of the gdpr does affect the fediverse, there's no exception for non-commercial services, only for "household" services.
#
nightpool[m]
the definition of household services given in the recitations will affect any instance with more then 1 or 2 users.
#
nightpool[m]
the section about legitimate grounds for data processing does not really affect the fediverse.
#
nightpool[m]
obviously ianal and case law may differ from country to country

the language around article 11 is a lot more vague, there are some carve-outs for noncommercial use but it's unclear how broadly that applies.

Also we cannot be sure how the different countries will implement it. Your server could already count as "commercial" when you receive donations for it - or when a company is sponsoring it (like one of my servers)
