Remember the recently annonced "AT Protocol" https://atproto.com/ Any idea why it was needed considering the W3C had already standardized ActivityPub? https://www.w3.org/TR/activitypub/

You don't need that but if you want to learn how Mastodon works on the low-level...It uses @w3c ActivityPub specification. I assess that the protocol is pretty OK from privacy point of view. That said, it does not contain a Privacy Considerations section:( https://www.w3.org/TR/activitypub/

↩️ Federated service + using open standards (https://www.w3.org/TR/activitypub/) what's not to like? :) Maybe you can write a Kafka-bridge for it!

↩️ You are free to write your own ActivityPub server to join the Fediverse, it's an open standard! https://www.w3.org/TR/activitypub/ Not a very simple one though, so using (or forking) an existing piece of software like Mastodon or Pleroma would be more practical.

ActivityPub, the protocol that #Mastodon uses to connect to the #Fediverse, is an officially @w3c standard. https://www.w3.org/TR/activitypub/
