↩️ Basically, mastodon use the activity pub standard to communicate with other server. That standard is not limited to mastodon though, so you can make your own app and it would be able to send and received mastodon toot with no problems. https://www.w3.org/TR/activitypub/

Mastodon implements the ActivityPub protocol specification described by the W3C here: https://www.w3.org/TR/activitypub/#specification-profiles Moving a network over to an open protocol is what’s important. The apps built on that protocol will improve with the network effect. Be a bit patient.

↩️ visibility: yes it does (except if it is flagged private. I don’t know if you can privately reply to a public message but I started reading https://www.w3.org/TR/activitypub/ and the protocol at least doesn’t forbid it), but you might not get notified if you’re not in the recipients list

There seems to be a 'Move' activity that is quite useful but not part of ActivityPub but defined by mastodon unilaterally. Who cares to add such to the standard? Is it the folks on this list? Maybe Gargron can elaborate on the interface.

↩️ Also, the beginning of the W3C Recommendation for the ActivityPub protocol is unexpectedly readable and gives some sense of what the protocol is trying to do and how: https://www.w3.org/TR/activitypub/ (but the exact relation btw Mastodon and ActivityPub still escapes me).
