[beesbuzz.biz] It’s way too easy to get heated while in the thick of things and for bad-faith interpretations to take over from the point anyone’s trying to make, and that is absolutely a two-way street.1For now I’ve removed Toot! from my phone and DNS-blocked plush.city from my home... [mastodon.me.uk/@gilest] I think we need more self-hosted personal publishing tools that aren't Wordpress and don't require use of a terminal to set up. A bit of a rant: https://gilest.org/indie-easy.html #indieweb (https://mastodon.me.uk/@gilest/111719817768415422)

[indieweb.social/tags/indieweb] Let’s Make the IndieWeb EasierIt needs to be easier to install and use your own website. [tilde.zone/@xandra] these are exactly my thoughts on the #indieweb barriers for beginners getting into #webdev or building a personal website. definitely resonates, so thanks for writing it, giles!if your tool or platform (or SSG...) requires users to start with a command line, it's not easy enough... [tantek] I wouldn't call it a backlash as such

[tantek] and https://indieweb.org/Getting_Started already divides how to get started into 3 levels depending on technical experience (service, CMS, self-starters)
#
[tantek]
yeah we should be more upfront about SSGs being for self-starters only
#
[tantek]
instead of being a CMS "option" (because they really aren't)
#
lazcorp
I think that something on the front page might be useful - a re-iteration of the "three paths to setup your site" bit from the Getting_Started page
#
lazcorp
and maybe rephrasing point 1 as "Not a techie, but want a convenient place to publish your thoughts?"
#
lazcorp
i.e. stressing that you don't need to be a developer of any kind to start with IndieWeb
#
lazcorp
all in a nice colourful block on the front page
#
[tantek]
lazcorp it's a longstanding effort already

[tantek]
what are three columns
#
Loqi
2019/homepage is a project to update the IndieWeb community homepage in 2019, in particular with a three column layout designed for onboarding three common sets of visitors and new IndieWeb community members https://indieweb.org/three_columns

added myself as a potential contributor to bo0th the /2019 and /2021 pages
#
lazcorp
[edit] added myself as a potential contributor to both the 2019/homepage and 2021/homepage
#
[tantek]
I mean more than "contributors" we need actual contributions to the requests on the page.
#
[tantek]
anyone in the community is welcome to dip-in and contribute what they can when they can

https://indieweb.org/2021/homepage looks like the most recent one to add to?
#
[tantek]
there's always folks interested in helping, yet it's harder to turn that interest into productive contributions to making progress
#
[tantek]
sort of. /2021/homepage is/was tracydurnell's attempt at a proposed update
#
[tantek]
part of the challenge here is that because it's a community page, single-author one-off updates are not really sufficient — we need a homepage which itself is conducive to (easy for) others to help update, and that requires a collaborative design approach
#
[tantek]
a snapshot update is a great way to show a brainstorm for what is possible, however more importantly it needs all the "about" stuff around it like how to update the page, when things should move or get dropped or added etc.

we need to NOT use language like "non-technical" because (1) it is insulting, (2) it is inaccurate.
#
[tantek]
plenty of technical users really don't want to futz with command-line gibberish

I like that. Joining the IndieWeb means creating your User: page (which proves you have a domain and have set it up with enough IndieAuth/RelMeAuth to make it work)
