What is back to the future
#
Loqi
It looks like we don't have a page for "back to the future" yet. Would you like to create it? (Or just say "back to the future is ____", a sentence describing the term)
#
Loqi
[preview] [Tantek Çelik] Navigation arrows: always back to the past and forward to the future. Back to the Future is a movie, not a UI pattern.
#
[Al_Abut]
Maybe its just me but I can never wrap my head around why people put prev/next links in articles, like implying its part of a series.
#
[tantek]
What is sequential navigation
#
Loqi
Navigation refers to the UI, UX and markup allowing people to move around a website https://indieweb.org/sequential_navigation
#
[Al_Abut]
Makes sense when used as pagination for index or archive view. I don’t get the utility at the article level.
#
[Al_Abut]
It’s harmless, not a big deal, just a quirky way to do things IMO.
#
[Al_Abut]
At the article level, it works best when part of a series, like this tutorial in the Astro docs: https://docs.astro.build/en/tutorial/0-introduction/

[benatwork] there IS a lot of rage spam on those topics and others on IG. Unsurprising that the spam may be good enough to be indistinguishable from "lived experience" (how do you tell the difference from a misinformation perspective?)

#
[benatwork]
Quite possibly - it's still really rough to be removing peoples' perspectives in a war zone (and in particular to only really be doing it to one side, and the side that is experiencing exponentially more loss of life). More than anything, a sense that they don't have it right there yet.
#
[tantek]
Also IG posts by random accounts is not really a great way to encourage people to get "news" so frankly I wouldn't blame meta for blocking all of it. If blocking all such "news" posts on IG means people go seek out actual news sources instead then that's a net benefit
#
[benatwork]
I think if they do that it should be transparent and even; again, to do it to one set of perspectives and not the other doesn't feel equitable
#
[benatwork]
(and to remove content without saying why, which seems to also be happening)
#
[tantek]
The article made it sound like multiple perspectives were being blocked
#
[tantek]
Yeah I’m assuming misinfo fighting is the reason
#
[benatwork]
It talks about finding that Palestinian viewpoints are disproportionately suppressed - not solely, but disproportionately
#
[tantek]
Given the Russian misinfo campaigns on IG in 2016 re the US election, it's reasonable to presume those campaigns never stopped, and this is one of them (random accounts posting "viewpoints")
#
[benatwork]
Perhaps - but even if that were the case, there's a huge challenge here because there really is an ongoing human rights disaster
#
[benatwork]
It's definitely complicated
#
[tantek]
Yes, quite
#
[tantek]
Of course it's super tragic. It's also not a confidence that rage/info posts about Ukraine all but vanished subsequently. Who benefits from that?
#
[tantek]
not a coincidence*
#
[benatwork]
Fair. I'd say that both things are important human rights violations, and that perspectives on both should stand. I wish we didn't have to depend on Meta to form a humanitarian policy on this; if they weren't so big they wouldn't have such a big influence on the discourse about both events overall. But here we are.
#
[tantek]
I don't think these "platforms" can in any way to provide actual "accurate" first person perspectives of such global political and conflict events, it's too easy for spammers to setup fake accounts and they have motivation to do so, so you have to presume accounts you don't know (or reposts thereof) are such manipulations
#
[tantek]
can in any way be depended on or trusted* to provide actual "accurate"
#
[tantek]
Note that actual journalists know this because they don't cite these posts on platforms

Thanks. Fear the analogy running through that post is completely screwed up, talking about smoothing over bumps by creating dents but… hey ho! 😅
#

I guess if you can strike a bump in just the right way, the bump and dent cancel each other out and you end up with a flat surface.
