[paulrobertlloyd.com] I’ve been in Düsseldorf since Friday evening, but not for Beyond Tellerand. I was in Leeds at the beginning of May, but not for All Day Hey. Being in the same city as a conference, yet not in attendance, is a running theme.... (https://paulrobertlloyd.com/2024/135/a1/conferences/)

[paulrobertlloyd.com] As mentioned in my last post, I was in Düsseldorf last weekend for IndieWebCamp. Organisation was haphazard and last minute meaning attendance was low, but it was a good opportunity to meet and catch-up with other members of the community.... [shellsharks.social/@shellsharks] Hey! I’m reviving my long-dormant #podcast, “The Shellsharks Podcast”. Exciting right?! [Paul_Robert_Ll] ^ how was Organization "haphazard"? The dates were known and announced long in advance. As soon as we got a venue for Saturday, that was well documented, certainly not "last minute", and by what criteria are you concluding that attendance was "low"? Did you compare IWC DUS 2024 day 1 & day 2 numbers of attendees to previous IWC DUS events (since we restarted events, since comparing to pre-pandemic events is not helpful in

any way)

The only thing that was "last minute": was announcing a specific venue for Create Day. We did announce in advance that we had a lobbycon backup, so folks knew there would be "something", so I would dispute "haphazard" in that regard as well.

Perhaps there’s a better word I could use, but that was my feeling. Not a criticism, more of an observation. Am comparing to camps in Nuremberg and Brighton, perhaps helped by those having a single venue and 20+ attendees. It’s the last minute venue choice, and things like not having a session grid with post-its etc. that gave the impression of event being a bit adhoc. It all came together, and maybe that’s all that matters.

no post-its?? 😱

sounds like someone didn't read the organizing doc 😉

[Paul_Robert_Ll] comparing numbers across cities like that, especially since 2020, ignores city-specific contexts and is unhelpful. Like I said, if you want to compare numbers, compare across different camps in the same city before making a claim like "low". Different cities have different levels of community, which is more reflective of the history of those communities than any one camp
#
[tantek]
again, day 1 was not a last minute venue choice
#
[tantek]
yeah not having a session grid with post-its was suboptimal, but all in all reflected more of an "early barcamp" vibe.
#
[tantek]
also tbh as a volunteer co-organizer it sucks to see your *months of work* labeled "haphazard and last minute"
#
[tantek]
I don't know how GWG, or Joschi, or Marc feel about that characterization, but you'd have to ask them
#
[tantek]
it's obviously not going to make me stop from organizing them in the future, however, I'd say a single blog post and even sentence like that could be enough to discourage a co-organizer from bothering with volunteering to help co-organize in the future, and frankly, rallying co-organizers to step up & volunteer is one of the hardest challenges we have to overcome to make IndieWebCamps
