Going political... I adore ruby, but it's hard to defend rails for projects at scale given its runtime performance. I get that dev productivity is important and that has to be balanced, but silicon and electricity cost more than money.

fun fact: this is why mastodon isn't called GNU social. when he first came to me with the project it was super cool (then called tootsuite) and it was a rewrite of GNU social in rails but I didn't want to adopt it because I knew it would be hard to run then in 2014/15. I'm now thinking about rewriting some parts of GNU FM in rails.
