[@khleedril] Some thing which always makes me cringe is being pushed nouns with a detached initial letter, especially 'd', 'k', 'e' and 'i'. It always seems to refer to something half-arsed which someone is trying to push by riding a trendy train.... (https://cyberplace.social/@khleedril/115695325520098807)

kinda have to disagree with you there [benatwork]. we know from experience that RSS, due to violating DRY, is often neglected and breaks quickly. no matter how much evangelism there is to sites to support it, there's nearly zero follow-up so it ends up rotting. RSS is not a longterm or sustainable plan or advocacy. also, this article could have been written maybe 15 or 20 years ago but now it reads like RSS nostalgia instead. we have a

known (so to speak) timeline of newer, easier (to publish and consume), more reliable standards (Atom being the obvious one, JSONfeed being the latest)
#
[tantek]
I think my overall reaction is that RSS has evolved (into Atom, h-feed, ActivityStreams, JSON feed) and the article doesn't acknowledge that nor even mention any of those, and that's a missed opportunity to stand apart from all the other RSS nostalgia posts out there.

The thing that's been remarkable about this in my current job is how important it is to maintain our feeds in order to support paid partnerships. The Lexis Nexis and Bloomberg terminal integrations I call out are real things that are worth real revenue. So, yes, it violates DRY for sure, and it's often left on the vine, but for publishers, a lot of money is often riding on it working well.
#
[benatwork]
(And those integrations don't offer other ways of going about that.)
#

So it's effectively a legacy integration API at this point 😎
#
[tantek]
sure, and pretty sure the SEC still supports proprietary XML (maybe SGML actually) exports for the same reason
#
[tantek]
[benatwork] if you want to make a point about legacy compat, then make a point about legacy compat. That's not what that article is.
#
[tantek]
And yes a paid partnership actually funds maintenance of what is an additional marginal cost, whereas the vast majority of use-cases of RSS bear no such marginal revenue benefits and thus are a tax on websites.
