[@hober] Books in #GoodReads personal data export are represented by title only. No author information, no ISBN, no publisher, no publication date, no edition info, no URLs. Ugh. #indieweb (https://mastodon.social/@hober/115748433245731099)

^ hey gRegor, [chrisaldrich] I thought we discussed some sort of GoodReads export stuff from the weekend for populating your personal library that did more than that? Can you respond?
#
[tantek]
what is card catalog
#
Loqi
card catalog is a way to keep track of books or other media in a library, including a personal library, typically physical media and sometimes also including digital items https://indieweb.org/card_catalog
#
gRegor
I'm not familiar with the goodreads export format
#
gRegor
I know I looked at the RSS for your shelves years ago, not sure if there's something more detailed like a full account export that might have more.
#
[tantek]
someone at the Card Catalog session said you could use Goodreads to scan books you've read and it would populate all the info
#
[tantek]
and then you could export from that to make your own personal cart catalog
#
[tantek]
who here is still using Goodreads? [chrisaldrich] maybe GWG maybe [Al_Abut]? if you do, can you take a crack at updating https://indieweb.org/Goodreads#How_to_export_your_data ? the links there into Goodreads just go to generic pages (soft breakage of deep links into Goodreads)_
#
GWG
[tantek]: I've never used goodreads.
#
[tantek]
who brought it up?
#
[tantek]
someone did
#
[tantek]
was it [social]?
#
[social]
Goodreads has an export option for your whole collection, but no API.
#
[social]
It wasn’t me. I stopped using Goodreads years back.
#
GWG
I had mentioned that I had used Library Thing years ago, but had not recently
#
[tantek]
[social] see the post above by hober. They're saying they only get the title of the book from a Goodreads export whereas [chrisaldrich] said in the session that he gets everything ISBN etc.
#
[social]
I use a mix of Google Books and Library thing.
#
[social]
Ah, you can easily scrape and get your book titles, but there isn’t (or isn’t now) an API. I remember there being an API many years back.
#
[social]
Reading Chris’ note and looking at the iOS Goodreads app it has a scan book into your collection. It doesn’t have an export method. The full export from the Goodreads site builds a CSV file of your collection with title, author(s), and much more metadata, if they have it. Looking at a few books in my output the missing metadata are books I had metadata gaps from Google Books as well.
#
gRegor
I still use goodreads, the scanner rarely. I don't know the export options.
#
[tantek]
[social] see post from hober above. They are claiming the current export only contains title. Can you actually try an export and see if you can get more than title? In which case can you update https://indieweb.org/Goodreads#How_to_export_your_data with the exact steps you took?
#
gRegor
I wonder if Chris has an API key (from before they stopped giving them out) and can pull some of that per book, or if he's really exporting the full shelf in Excel each time and processing it. Interested to read more!
#
[tantek]
yeah I need to hear from someone actually *doing* it and not just quoting from docs
#
gRegor
The full goodreads export includes ISBN and ISBN13 columns, among many others. Just got a fresh export. I can document on the wiki later today.
#
gRegor
24 columns of data
#
gRegor
And the export generated on demand, pretty quickly. None of the "We'll email you once the gods have decided your export is ready." :)
#
gRegor
what is goodreads
#
Loqi
Goodreads is a silo for keeping track of books, reviews, and reading progress https://indieweb.org/Goodreads

I've been very reluctant to set defaults for syndication, making options be selected each time instead. This is a bit problematic because I like to reduce friction.... (https://david.shanske.com/2024/12/08/determining-good-syndication-defaults/)
