[tw2113_Slack_] is that primarily a just-for-you project or do you have designs on making it a bigger plugin for others?
#
[tw2113_Slack_]
mostly just for me at the moment

People should feel free to borrow and amend as desired, but not planning to put this into wordpress.org since there’s so much tie-in with themes

Following the discussion hrere, I think I will take a look at that plugin for the hell of it. Love looking at prototypes. Which reminds me that I need to make a child theme for myself over here, too.

cambridgeport90: Got a moment re your Simple Location issue?
#
cambridgeport90
Kidding me? I have the rest of a Friday night if we need it. Thanks!
#
cambridgeport90
I think I'm definitely missing something/ something's janky, but I can't figure out what it is. It also doesn't help that I forgot to copy my geonames password to bitwarden l...whoops. Let me go reset that first.
#
GWG
cambridgeport90: I just spent a week rewriting all the reverse geocoding code as a result of your comment
#
GWG
It was due...but...
#
cambridgeport90
Nice ... did you find anything out of place that needed fixing?
#
GWG
Nothing that would have stopped you
#
GWG
At least I think not
#
GWG
You weren't getting any output?
#
cambridgeport90
I'm trying to determine whether different things that I have had happen this past few weeks are related. I added my visual crossing API key for weather, for instance, but in order to have that autogenerated per post, your location has to be found first, right? Otherwise, it's manual entry?
#
GWG
cambridgeport90: It looks for location before weather, but it should return both
#
GWG
How is it finding your location? HTML5?
#
cambridgeport90
I think it's HTML5. I was hoping I pick a provider that uses my phone's GPS,for she's probably the most accurate, especially on days when I'm at work, and most of those sorts of features are turned off on my work device (understandably),though wasn't sure if any of them have apps?
#
cambridgeport90
iOS,BTW, if it matters.
#
GWG
Okay.. phone... that's not an issue.
#
GWG
So, you hit lookup and nothing happens?
#
cambridgeport90
Just gives an error that it can't find the location. I think I know why that is. Am I missing a field somewhere? Because I know that geonames requires an account, which I have, but I was not able to find a place into which to put credentials.
#
GWG
cambridgeport90, it should be in the menu...let me look
#
GWG
If you set the Geo Provider to Geonames, it shows the user under API Keys
#
cambridgeport90
Dang it all. I figured I missed something. Hold on. Let me see if I see that anywhere around here.
#
cambridgeport90
Wow that was weird. evidently I forgot to hit save ... (was working on my web site in the office when I was supposed to be working LOL). I'm surprised that it didn't come to me to hit save first before the rest of the fields would show?
#
cambridgeport90
Now I just need to reset my password I think.
#
GWG
I didn't use any JS for the page, so any fields won't appear till you refresh the page
#
GWG
cambridgeport90: The next update should be coming along soon.
#
cambridgeport90
Oh. Wow do I have lots to learn ... but that's why I'm here. LOL
#
GWG
It works on improving the textual summary generated from the return from the provider.
#
GWG
For example, there's a new Home Country field, so the description will only show the country if it isn't yours

I wonder why ... location works, now, though Geonames thinks I'm in Vietnam LOL. Not sure how that happens? Time zone is off, too.
#
GWG
It would be.
#
GWG
If you give me the coordinates, I can check it in my version
#
GWG
It's never been that far off for me.
#
cambridgeport90
Do they normally show up? I am probably missing them if they do.
#
GWG
They should. There's a box for them.
#
cambridgeport90
Coordinates show up after I published my test: https://cambridgeport90.org/248-2/

#
cambridgeport90
I can assure you that is no where close to where I'm at. LOL
#
GWG
That's strange.
#
GWG
Could it be some sort of iOS spoofing thing?
#
cambridgeport90
Is that how location is being pulled?Because from iOS my location is accurate; between Apple, Google, and Foursquare (that would be cool as a provider, the Foursquare API,just an idea), so. if that's the case, then where would it being spoofed from, and by whom?
#
cambridgeport90
Could it also have anything to do with the Plesk server settings where that WP install is, as well?
#
GWG
No idea. It's asking the browser for the location.
#
GWG
The only other way is pulling it from a service.
#
GWG
I support aaronpk's Compass, for example.
#
cambridgeport90
I could never figure out how to get that work, or I would opt for that one.
#
cambridgeport90
And whichever provider you have, do you also need the corresponding app on your phone, too?
#
GWG
No. If you use the web version on your phone or computer, the site will ask the browser for the location.
#
GWG
On your computer, that's probably somewhat inaccurate
#
GWG
On your phone, it should use the phone's GPS
#
GWG
So, Vietnam is a bit off
#
GWG
For the provider, no.
#
GWG
I support the browser, which is the default, as well as Compass, and the manual ones.
#
GWG
Set location from airport code in the address field, for example. You can also just write in an address and it should look it up.
#
GWG
And try to map it out
#
GWG
I meant to look into Phonetrack, which is a Nextcloud extension that does location tracking
#
GWG
If you have any service that I can retrieve location from, then I can use that
#
GWG
At one point, I used Home Assistant.
#
cambridgeport90
I have quite a few of them on my phone, actually; Fourswuare, google, and Apple. I find Foursquare to be the most accurate though.
#
cambridgeport90
And wow I need a new set of fingers.
#
GWG
Yes, but none of them let you access that information from a website, I believe
#
GWG
In real time
#
cambridgeport90
And your idea with the nextcloud extension. That's even cooler, since I want to put up a Nextcloud server at one point.
#
cambridgeport90
But for now I'll just have to set up stuff manually until I can figure out how to set up either Compass or the extension on a Nextcloud server, though the latter might be a while. after all, if you know the coordinates, which I can look up on my phone, then, you can get the rest of it from there. That might be the simplest method at the moment.
#
GWG
Compass is nice because for iOS, you can use Overland, which is written by the same author, and works all that is expected.
#
cambridgeport90
Does he have documentation on that? If so, I can't seem to find it.
#
cambridgeport90
(which reminds me, need to re-authorize OwnYourSwarm.)
#
cambridgeport90
Not sure what happened to it; seems to hate my Micropub endpoint.
#
GWG
Well, how good are you at installing PHP apps on servers?
[tantek] joined the channel
#
cambridgeport90
Not bad at all. I could theoretically stick it under a subdomain, couldn't I? (in the same boat as aperture, as well, which I also need to set up.)
#
GWG
Compass is much easier to install than Aperture
#
GWG
The instructions in the Compass repo are pretty self-explanatory.
#
GWG
Install, configure web server...
#
GWG
There's no database, just a series of flat files
#
cambridgeport90
Oh. I never looked in the repository. I actually forgot about it until you reminded me. LOL
#
GWG
I've found it useful since I started using it

cambridgeport90 the plugin is mostly just metabox registration and filtering and post type/taxonomy registration, but does what i need it to do. 😄
#
cambridgeport90
Even better.
#
cambridgeport90
I have a feeling once I get all the kinks out of my site, once I fix all the widgets, and of course, this current issue, I think things will actually look nice. Oh, and getting a child theme so that I can acc my own copyleft message at the bottom. I'm also gonna take the meta widget outta there, I think, as well.
#
GWG
cambridgeport90: I find, once you do, you find more kinks
#
cambridgeport90
I also need to fix the visuals, and at the moment, I am somewhat annoyed, because my favourite colors don't correspond to WCAG recommendations, so I think I will have to settle for mostly shades of blue. Wanted to add some red in there, but my friend who is training to become a teacher of the visually impaired and a universal design specialist warned me against that.
#
cambridgeport90
Do you folks have any suggestions for theme colors? Love what Autonomie does, but need to make mine prettier than the default. Not that the default theme looks aren't pretty.
#
GWG
Colors aren't my thing
#
cambridgeport90
Ah. I also need to learn CSS,as well so that I can actually do some cool stuff. Think either blue and white or black and white. In my head, black and white looks cooler.
#
cambridgeport90
I'll have to goof around with it and then see what people think.

On the location thing - are latitude and longitude being swapped? That can give odd results
#

Try this - it's about 5 lines of code using the location api to put you on a map https://where.kevin-marks.com/maptime/

I think I will take a look at that. Sounds interesting. And to answer your question, I don't think that longitude and latitude got swapped. They might have, though. I shall double check
