# [Michelle_Moore] Hello, I am going through the WordPress steps on IndieWeb.org to setup my WordPress site. I have passed and gone back to the Webmentions steps because it seems to work and then it doesn’t with the Webmentions plugin. I believe the contributing factors are that I installed the IndieBlocks plugin which has a Webmentions feature. I have since uninstalled. Then I installed Mastodon Autopost. I believe there are remnants o
# [Michelle_Moore] the uninstalled IndieBlocks plugin on my site and also believe that I don’t totally understand how brid.gy is supposed to be setup. At this point, I did actually get a like from Mastodon yesterday on a post, so something is working. But I can’t post a reply to a post. I can usually provide much more clearer symptoms but I think that I may have multiple issues going on. Help! 🙂

# [chrisaldrich] welcome [Michelle_Moore]! I haven't played around with IndieBlocks yet (I've still got a preference for the classic editor and haven't switched over on my primary site yet). I suspect it may have some output for Webmentions, but I doubt it's doing the same work as Webmentions plugin. Do you also have Semantic Linkbacks plugin set up with Webmentions plugin as well?
# [chrisaldrich] It looks like you've got the Mastodon part of brid.gy set up for backfeeding responses: https://brid.gy/mastodon/@tmichellemoore@mastodon.social
# [chrisaldrich] If you've not looked into it, the Syndication Links plugin will help Bridgy make the 1-1 match between your content on your site and the corresponding content on Mastodon.
# [chrisaldrich] What is Syndication links plugin?
# Loqi Syndication Links is a plugin for WordPress that allow one to easily add rel-syndication/u-syndication links to indicate where syndicated copies are available https://indieweb.org/Syndication_Links_plugin
# [chrisaldrich] Aside: I've apparently run afoul of the header issues with mastodon.social and bridgy. Mastodon has severed my backfeed connection and I can't seem to get it to reconnect to bridgy....
# [chrisaldrich] GWG, I do have a couple of Mastodon accounts to which I can syndicate now. Is it possible to pick and choose which ones get which content via Syndication links? It's definitely an edge case, but I've noticed that some of my English language posts are being sent to toot.wales (my Welsh account) now that mastodon.social isn't playing nicely with Bridgy this past week or so.
# [chrisaldrich] I've only sporadically posted in Welsh, so it hasn't been high on my list of things to puzzle out on the syndication front.
# [chrisaldrich] What is IndieBlocks?
# Loqi It looks like we don't have a page for "IndieBlocks" yet. Would you like to create it? (Or just say "IndieBlocks is ____", a sentence describing the term)
# [chrisaldrich] GWG, yes, that would be cool.
# [Michelle_Moore] ↩️ Thank you [chrisaldrich]! I installed Webmentions and Semantic Linkbacks. After I added that yesterday, I received Likes on my blog. It somewhat works correctly, but I can't reply to a post with a post. It receive a message that says there is no target. These are strange issues that point me to there has to be multiple things going on.
# [Michelle_Moore] ↩️ I have Syndication Links installed also.
# [chrisaldrich] [Michelle_Moore] it looks like Chuck Grimmett has been tinkering around with IndieBlocks and may have some guidance. https://cagrimmett.com/week-of/2022/10/16/week-of-october-10/. I'm not sure if the developer Jan Boddez is here in the channel or not.
# [Michelle_Moore] ↩️ Could it be that maybe I am having this issue? Because I don’t think that Toot to Mastodon worked each time I used it. The Mastodon Autopost did. That’s why I started removing plugins but there seemed to be a remnant of the IndieBlocks in there based on one of the errors.
# [chrisaldrich] IndieBlocks is a [[WordPress]] plugin to help enable IndieWeb compatibility for the Gutenberg block-based editor. https://wordpress.org/plugins/indieblocks/
# [Michelle_Moore] ↩️ He is on Mastodon. We are in a message together with him.
# Loqi ok, I added "https://cagrimmett.com/week-of/2022/10/16/week-of-october-10/" to a brand new "See Also" section of /IndieBlocks https://indieweb.org/wiki/index.php?diff=84727&oldid=84726
# [chrisaldrich] [Michelle_Moore], if you can, kindly don't thread messages on Slack. While it "works" there, it doesn't (yet) translate as well for those who are on other mirrored versions of the chat like IRC, web, matrix, discord, et al.
# [Michelle_Moore] ↩️ [chrisaldrich] Is Chuck’s webpage opening for you or are you receiving a lot of code?
# [Michelle_Moore] [chrisaldrich] OK, I won’t do thread the messages. 🙂
# [chrisaldrich] I know he's on Mastodon, but that's much harder to search for those looking for help/pointers and if we can keep as much context here, this chat is logged and may more easily help others as well as being a tad easier to move synopses to the wiki during or after-the-fact. 🙂
# [chrisaldrich] Incidentally the emojitags from Slack don't get translated across either...
# [chrisaldrich] Chuck's page resolved for me a few minutes ago...
# [Michelle_Moore] [chrisaldrich] Separate question: Are the majority of your posts regular WordPress post types or are you using customer post types? I can’t tell if the Kinds posts are custom.
# [chrisaldrich] What is the Post Kinds Plugin?
# Loqi The Post Kinds Plugin is a WordPress plugin that adds support for responding and interacting with other sites to WordPress https://indieweb.org/Post_Kinds_Plugin
# [chrisaldrich] ^^ That plugin uses a custom taxonomy if I recall and not a custom post type, so they're a regular post with additional meta data attached.
# [chrisaldrich] The benefit of using it is that it adds all the custom microformats to each post so that other sites can correctly interpret their types (like, bookmark, read, watch, etc.)
# [chrisaldrich] The downside is that it's not (yet) compatible with the Gutenberg block editor, which is where some of Jan's work with IndieBlocks is moving.
# [chrisaldrich] I'm using GWG's Post Kinds Plugin, and that's what's generating the formatting/layout of those posts for me. (That menu is custom made, but uses the Post Kinds Plugin URLs for resolving.)
# [Michelle_Moore] IndieBlocks, when I had it installed, used a custom post type of Note. I think I want to keep my site as simple as possible or either just make the customer post type myself using Pods.
# [Michelle_Moore] [chrisaldrich] Please don’t think I am stalking you. Your site provide a study in what I view as a great example of IndieWeb concepts and I just try to deconstruct and figure out how you are doing these things.
# [chrisaldrich] Another blocks-based option, which is also a Custom Post Type is [jeremyfelt]'s short notes plugin https://wordpress.org/plugins/shortnotes/
# [chrisaldrich] The difficult part here is that we're in an odd inter-regnum space between classic editor (Post Kinds Plugin) and Gutenberg (which has options like Jan's plugin and Jeremy's).
# [chrisaldrich] Post Kinds plugin supports the widest varieties of types while the others only have a few options at present because they're newer.
# [chrisaldrich] What is the Short Notes Plugin?
# Loqi It looks like we don't have a page for "Short Notes Plugin" yet. Would you like to create it? (Or just say "Short Notes Plugin is ____", a sentence describing the term)
# [chrisaldrich] What is Shortnotes plugin?
# Loqi It looks like we don't have a page for "Shortnotes plugin" yet. Would you like to create it? (Or just say "Shortnotes plugin is ____", a sentence describing the term)
# [chrisaldrich] Shortnotes plugin is a [[WordPress]] plugin which provides a custom post type with Gutenberg blocks support for posting [[notes]] to your website. https://wordpress.org/plugins/shortnotes/
# [chrisaldrich] [Michelle_Moore] I suspect that's what that classes box would be for, but I've not used it myself, so can't say for sure.
# [chrisaldrich] Another option is to just manually handwrite all of your posts' HTML to add in the appropriate microformats yourself. I did that once upon a time, but it becomes tedious when you post 50 things a day.
# [Michelle_Moore] OK, I am going to experiment. But I need to learn more before I can experiment.
# [Michelle_Moore] Well, I don’t think that I want to do that, but if I could make those classes work, I could create a template.
# [chrisaldrich] If you haven't found it yet, I've got a WordPress collection of IndieWeb related material on my site: https://wordpress.org/plugins/shortnotes/
# [chrisaldrich] Oops, cut and paste and attention failed me: https://boffosocko.com/research/indieweb/
# [chrisaldrich] There isn't much exploration in the Gutenberg side of things yet. Perhaps I'll spend some time tinkering over the holidays and write up some details.
# [chrisaldrich] I've got to head out to a meeting, but keep posting questions. 🙂
# [Michelle_Moore] That’s a lot to read! It will keep me busy for sure! Maybe I can fill in my gaps on my current website problem and push me forward. Thank you [chrisaldrich]!
# [Michelle_Moore] Hhmm Slack doesn’t have editing…
# [chrisaldrich] Don't read it all in one go. Think about what you want to use your site for and what you want to do and then go from there....
# [chrisaldrich] No editing is alright as your edits wouldn't propagate to the other chat versions anyway...
# [Michelle_Moore] Thank you!
# [chrisaldrich] [Michelle_Moore], Incidentally Jan's blog does have some recent posts (I've not read them yet) about his plugin: https://jan.boddez.net/
# [Michelle_Moore] Ok, I was reading the one with the documentation. I will try that one.
# [chrisaldrich] What is IndieBlocks?
# Loqi IndieBlocks is a WordPress plugin to help enable IndieWeb compatibility for the Gutenberg block-based editor https://indieweb.org/IndieBlocks
# [chrisaldrich] From the IndieBlocks github, it sounds like it's doing it's own webmentions and display work, but it sounds like there's a setting to turn that part off if you're using Webmentions/Semantic Linkbacks. (I haven't played with it yet, so this may need some further exploration/confirmation.)
# [snarfed] we need an equivalent of !march for time since we decided the webmention and semantic linkbacks plugins should be merged. 6y? 7? still seeing confused users filing bugs in Bridgy and elsewhere due to that UX 😢 https://github.com/snarfed/bridgy/issues/1355#issuecomment-1330799531
# [snarfed] oh man also the semantic linkbacks issues are still split between the original and forked repos ☹ https://github.com/pfefferle/wordpress-semantic-linkbacks/issues , https://github.com/acegiak/Semantic-Linkbacks/issues
# [chrisaldrich] If I'm reading it all right, it looks like the IndieWeb Press this now support following?! What a small simple win. snarfed++
