[pfefferle] Good Morning/Afternoon! I am having a memory issue…can you tell me how I followed you using the ActivityPub plugin on my WordPress site (@tmichellemoore@tmichellemoore.com)? Initially I did install the Friends plugin and am experimenting with it again. But I can’t remember how I friended you when I originally installed the ActivityPub plugin.

[pfefferle] So without the Friends plugin, should I have been able to follow anyone with just the ActivityPub plugin?
#

And speaking of Alex Kirk, I am trying to write back to him to say why I don’t want my friends to be users on my site.
#
[pfefferle]
To your first question: not at the moment

[TMichelleMoore]: Why not?

Users can have no privileges

that a lot), but also it represents a security risk in my humble opinion. For example, recently the Advanced Custom Fields plugin vulnerability “allowed any unauthenticated user to steal sensitive information for, in this case, privilege escalation on the WordPress site tricking a privileged user to visit the crafted URL path.” https://wptavern.com/advanced-custom-fields-plugin-patches-reflected-xss-vulnerability. @gwg Based on my reading, if you allow it, the users (friends/acquaintances) can see private posts. But to answer the question, that is what I am trying to enunciate in my answer back to Alex. I think the short answer is I don’t want all of the users. I know I don’t look in there much, but having let’s say 200 friends, like in my current Mastodon account, represents a maintenance burden (low since I wouldn’t be

trying to put it down on paper and those are the first two items that I have thought of.

GWG
[TMichelleMoore]: I think it depends on the way it is set up, but I understand the concern

[TMichelleMoore]
I am sure someone more technical that I could provide better reasons.

Hello @gwg. I am trying to setup the Simple Location plugin and stuck at the first step. Setup the Google Maps Provider. Should it be the Maps Embed API? What’s the difference between a Map provider and a Geo Provider? Do you have more detailed instructions on this? Once I get past this part, I will be able to provide feedback. I think. lol It seems like a straightforward plugin, but it is actually very sophisticated
#
[TMichelleMoore]
from what I can tell. My syndication links write up will be there by next weekend. For some reason my publishing had stopped working and it worked yesterday when I posted my second post. Don’t know what is going on there…
#
GWG
[TMichelleMoore]: Definitely need to expand that

Static Maps API, not the Maps Embed API
#
GWG
Do you want to use Google? I do have a few choices.

[snarfed] Hello! I am sure I asked this before, but I just wanted to see one more time…is there a way to include the full URL in a Mastodon post when using http://Brid.gy? Mine keeps showing the post number.
#
[TMichelleMoore]
@gwg I am not wed to Google Maps. If there is one that is free, I will use your suggestions.
#
[TMichelleMoore]
In fact @gwg, tell me which ones to use for all of them and I will setup accounts.
#
GWG
[TMichelleMoore]: The Map Provider is what shows maps. The Geo Provider looks up addresses from coordinates. The Geolocation provider provides ways of finding current location. The Venu Provider is still experimental. The Elevation provider is if you want to store the height of a location. Weather Provider for Weather
#
GWG
[TMichelleMoore]: That's a matter of preference. I'm fond of Mapbox for the Map Provider
#
[snarfed]
[TMichelleMoore] yes! yeah I think you have asked about this before. last time it was because your site includes rel=shortlink in your HTML with that number-based URL, which Bridgy honors: https://brid.gy/about#short-link
#
[TMichelleMoore]
@gwg I will look at Mapbox.
#
GWG
Nominatim is a free Geo Provider. Geolocation can stay with HTML5. Elevation, if important, suggest Geonames. Weather through the National Weather Service. That's a good start
#
GWG
There's a lot of choice there
#
[TMichelleMoore]
[snarfed] Do you know where I might have added that rel=shortlink? Would I have added that purposely? I don’t remember doing so. How can I change that? I think that is where I got stuck and could never find this setting.
#
[TMichelleMoore]
@gwg Ok, I will try those providers. Thank you!
#
[snarfed]
I think wordpress may do it automatically based on your permalink/slug settings? not sure
#
[TMichelleMoore]
[snarfed] Is there an opposite thing like rel=long-link that I can add somewhere?
#
[snarfed]
[TMichelleMoore] you can tell Bridgy not to include a link with https://brid.gy/about#omit-link , or you can give it the exact full text to use with https://brid.gy/about#silo-content
#
[TMichelleMoore]
[snarfed] Thank you! I will try the silo-content method. Thank you!
#
[TMichelleMoore]
@gwg Thank you! I will be in touch!

@gwg I have accounts setup and entered keys/usernames. How do I actually enter a location? Lol Do I start with entering a Locations, over in the Post menu, that I can then select inside of a post? Or do I enter the longitude and latitude? Maybe my question is what is the workflow?
#
GWG
Just work inside a post...locations are created automatically
#
[TMichelleMoore]
I was in the post and clicked the Edit in the location section. What was I supposed to do then? Just enter the name of where I was in the Textual Description? I am sure I am missing two steps: what to enter first and what to enter second.
#
GWG
Hit the lookup button and see what happens?
#
[TMichelleMoore]
I received the error: User denied Geolocation. I typed the city and state in the Textual Description, then moved it to the Map Zoom, and then just left everything empty. All three have the same error.
#
GWG
[TMichelleMoore]: When it asked if you were going to allow location, did you allow location?
#
GWG
So, you want city and state lookup, not browser lookup then?
#
GWG
If so, change Geolocation Provider to "Set Location from Address"
#
[TMichelleMoore]
I didn’t receive that prompt. Correct yes I want to say where I was…ok I will change that setting. Thank you!
#
GWG
I use an automatic lookup from my phone.
#
GWG
I should refine the settings for people who don't have that. It has been a while.
#
[TMichelleMoore]
Changed the setting. Reading the plugin FAQs and will see if so can progress. Thank you for your guidance. I am sure I will need more. 😊
#

I definitely need to retest some features
