[mattl] (from #indieweb-dev) some WP caching plugins have a mode where they save rendered pages to disk as HTML and then serve from there
#
[snarfed]
not exactly what you asked for, but related?
#
[mattl]
Yeah I’m thinking about ways people can keep using WordPress without having to expose any of it to the public internet.

a very happy wordpress channel, everyone! is there any... "consensus"? on what makes a good cheap wordpress host? i am setting up a site for a family member and want to avoid wp-dot-com and wpengine.
#
[mattl]
If I was looking for a host that wasn’t either of those I’d be looking for a host that has snapshots, daily backups and automatic updates. Bonus if they’re focused on WordPress.

I really like http://pair.com but that's a function of being a customer long enough that my account can buy alcohol in the usa. They do offer WP centric hosting which I believe meets the criteria Matt just described. My usage is more quixotic because I host several dozen domains/subdomains.

Here's their WordPress offering. https://www.pair.com/wordpress-hosting/
#
[artlung]2
(I'll admit to the fact that at that price point I'm not sure they're really competitive price-wise with other potential offerings but they do have good support)

aww, pair! i used to dream of hosting a colo box with them when i lived in Pittsburgh. thanks for the recc!

We use Pair a lot at work too, mostly happy with them. Support has dropped a *bit* in the last year or so since their latest acquisition, but pretty good overall
#
[schmarty]
pair's introductory wordpress hosting looks reasonable ($95/yr billed annually) for the _first_ year, but it nearly doubles for year two. 😅

I have a client I consult with and they use https://kinsta.com/ which is astoundingly thoughtfully made and managed. good backups, good integrations, security, performance, but also the bottom end is $30/month which is not a price point most personal instances justifies.

and speaking of quixotic, last time I considered paying for an instance of something it was on https://www.pikapods.com -- I use it to host my bookmarks (linkding) for under $2/month. It lists a floor of a buck and a half for WP hosting. The link management app is good, and managed, I get periodic messages that it got updated to the latest release and I have no fears of losing stuff. It's really cheap, and near-zero admintax, but
#
[artlung]2
would I trust it for WordPress? I feel skeptical but I do think about it.
#
[artlung]2
(actually they list the price as "$1.7" per month which is a quirky way to list US prices. but I think it's basically a painless abstraction layer over cloud hosting)
#
[mattl]
Yeah, my friend’s wargaming company uses Kinsta.

[mattl]
[schmarty] https://laughingsquid.us is more affordable and I’ve heard good things about them.

It looks like they’re reselling https://pressable.com now which is owned by Automattic FWIW.
#
[mattl]
But their prices are cheaper than Pressable.
#
[mattl]
I suspect the cheapest plan + Cloudflare’s WordPress plugin for caching/security/blocking LLMs would handle way way more than the 10,000 visitors they’re claiming.
#
[schmarty]
10,000 visitors does feel fraught in today's public web environment
#
[mattl]
Yeah, you could get that in 5 mins easily.
