Hello wordpress channel! I'm doing an IndieWeb talk this week to a wordpress audience. I've been through the wiki and I have some pointers to recommend. I am currently not using wordpress so I'm wondering if anyone here has something exciting that I am likely unaware that you think I should share? Thank you!

[Ana_R] What are you goals for this audience? New recommendations? Reminders? MF2 seems like a starting point
#
[Ana_R]
My goal is mostly to show quick entry points to an "IndieWebfied" website. Since I will talking about the theory, which can seem daunting, it seems like we have plug-ins that make it all easier. Like the MF2 and the IndieWeb plug-in - so my plan to recommend the wiki and those plug-ins.
#
[Ana_R]
"IndieWebified" * typo
#
[asuh]
[Ana_R] Do you know if this audience is using a modern WordPress with full-site editing enabled? or Classic theme?
#
[Ana_R]
nope 😕 could be anything. the description of the event says "developers and engineers who build with WordPress" - so developers would know how to poke things
#
[Ana_R]
which is why I am inclined to share theory and entry points but don't go into deep as people will likely poke it themselves.
#
[Ana_R]
(also, the talk goes on another tangent for a while)
#
[asuh]
There are limitations or incompabilities of some older IndieWeb plugins to be compatible with modern block themes, and that’s where https://indieblocks.xyz/ from comes in to fill some gaps, just FYI. GWG and @pfef
#
[asuh]
[pfefferle] can go into more details
#
[Ana_R]
Thanks Micah! That's really helpful to keep in mind.
#
GWG
I think I'm limited by the fact that I don't use the block editor, so I'm often...the odd person out on anything with full site editing
#
[asuh]
You’re welcome! I’ve taken a long time to understand how to use everything in a classic theme and experiment with what block themes can and can’t do, but it’s very limited. The future of WordPress being block themes means some of the fundamental needs for integrating Indieweb features seems fuzzy. Such as, how much would it matter today if MF2 were actually embedded in core, with respect to block themes?
#
[pfefferle]
the problem with MF2 is, that the plugin does not really work with up-to-date themes
#
[pfefferle]
so either you have to use a compatible theme or the block editor with the https://wordpress.org/plugins/indieblocks/ plugin by Jan Boddez
#
GWG
Yes, and I'm willing to do more stuff... I've been slow on coding of late... but I don't think I would put in an insane amount of work in areas I wouldn't use.
#
[pfefferle]
so in the end I think the MF(2) part is the most controversial part if the Indie-WordPress project
#
[Ana_R]
Right, would something like this sound correct:
#
[Ana_R]
> here's a few existing plug-ins - but these may not work with the recent stuff (e.g. themes and block editor). So maybe also have a look at http://indieblocks.xyz as it may suit your current better?

*your current setup
#
[pfefferle]
but maybe this is also the magic of WordPress, because we have implemented a really nice fallback to the WordPress-API, OpenGraph, http://Schema.org and others for Webmentions
#
[asuh]
[Ana_R] I’d be specific to call theme Block Themes: https://wordpress.org/documentation/article/block-themes/
#
[asuh]
And in that spirit, WordPress calls it the Site Editor https://wordpress.org/documentation/article/site-editor/
#
[asuh]
Only available if you use block themes
#
[Ana_R]
Thanks! here's a revised sentence
#
[Ana_R]
> here's a few existing plug-ins - but these may not work with the recent stuff (e.g. Block themes). So maybe also have a look at http://indieblocks.xyz as it may suit your current setup better?
#
[asuh]
^^ looks good to me
#
[Ana_R]
Micah, funny enough, I use Wagtail CMS at work so the concept of "blocks" is what we do as well all the time, so this makes sense to me 😄
#
[Ana_R]
Thanks, this was very helpful. I just want to make sure I can guide people in the right direction. Hopefully, curiosity sparks.
#
[asuh]
Nice, Wagtail reminds me a little of CraftCMS
#
[pfefferle]
but as I wrote above, the Webmention plugin has some nice fallbacks, exactly because of the theme issue
#
[pfefferle]
so it will most likely even work without mf2
#
[pfefferle]
I think we call it metaformats nowadays https://microformats.org/wiki/metaformats

cool! Matthias, you mean https://wordpress.org/plugins/webmention/ right?

excellent! Thank you. I will point to https://profiles.wordpress.org/indieweb/#content-plugins and share the caveat and highlight that detail about the webmention one.

[dshanske] any ideas about closing https://wordpress.org/plugins/wp-uf2/ ???

it was updated 8 years ago?

[pfefferle]
I think we can still have the GitHub version

[pfefferle] what’s the relationship that JSON-LD plays with MF2? Isn’t that a compatible path for developers to get started with themes?
#
GWG
I proposed closing it down, but I know someone objected.. but they aren't active anymore
#
GWG
We also have other methodologies... like using the wp api as a fallback
#
GWG
I think a better explanation on theme setup might work and better non mf2 fallbacks
#
[pfefferle]
[asuh] it is not that we propose to use something different... the case is that we simply fall back to other solutions that might be more common than microformats...
#
[pfefferle]
http://schema.org and OpenGraph are already adopted widely adopted by all the big SEO plugins, because of search engine and social media optimisation
#
[pfefferle]
so the chance to find one of these is quite high
#
[asuh]
Right, but with the reality that it’s unclear how to use MF2 with both block themes and inside of core, the JSON-LD could be a good focus for WordPress developers who are interested in supporting Indieweb features on their own, maybe even in a new plugin?

I did some minimal json ld to microformats conversion code for backcompat
