pfenwick I'm fond of the idea of Mintcoin, which aims to reduce the environmental impact of cryptocurrencies by switching from a proof-of-work to proof-of-stake model. (The currency is verified not by aggregate CPU, but by the aggregate holders of the currency itself.)
