tantek finchd - short answer - MediaWiki is the open wiki UX that most people on the planet are familiar with thanks to Wikipedia, therefore it is the logical first choice for a new open source wiki on that basis alone as long as you don't mine the MediaWiki maintenance (which we are fortunate aaronpk is good at).
