Should fragmentions only apply to headings and paragraphs?
#
JonathanNeal
and list items? Or everything? Everything gets complicated.
#
rascul
text can be outside of paragraphs and headings

<p>match <span>match</span></p> I think this scenario fails in the current version. I’m trying to resolve it.

Thanks rascul, your feedback is clear and concise.

@tantek Sorry, should've clarified. "IndieWebBrowser" could be a native app on iOS, Android, etc. It could look at a website and based on some markup conventions, determine a user's preferred communication channels (as you've been outlining in your posts).

@kylewm Yeah, there are a ton of possibilities given the markup structures around mentions, replies, and other microformatted data.

#
jgarber
@tantek Yeah, I thought that's what you were going for. UI consistency across platforms (iOS v. Android v. Firefox OS) seems like an ever-shifting target, though.
#
jgarber
But I can see the benefit of keeping the features in markup/CSS/JS.
#
tantek
kylewm - re: /2014/Design_Elements - photos or screenshots would help a lot there - hard to follow what the notes are talking about!
#
tantek
jgarber - not UI consistency across platforms, but rather *within* platforms
#
tantek
so someone using an iOS device just sees familiar icons
#
jgarber
@tantek Right, right. Poor word choice on my part.
#
tantek
and then I'll probably do one for FirefoxOS
#
mrflix
optimized the CSS for mobile browsers, namespaces the css to not bleed into existing CSS: http://mrflix.github.io/indieweb-contact/
#

and then server that to Android users too - since Android users are used to somewhat inconsistent UI / icons in their experience

#
bnvk
^— or anything with create status on the IndieWeb org account
#
tantek
bnvk - per discussion with aaronpk - why should it be on the indieweb gh?
#
tantek
we talked about that a while ago
#
bnvk
I missed that convo
#
bnvk
because it relates to indieweb
#
tantek
so "relates to indieweb" is not good enough
#
bnvk
it be using MF, webmentions, and help people install Indieweb software
#
tantek
we cleaned out tons of stuff that was not maintained
#
tantek
old forks etc.
#
tantek
bar has been raised
#
tantek
to stuff which is ready for people to use
#
tantek
for the indieweb gh
#
bnvk
so the org is not for projects which are works in progress?
#
tantek
until then - just develop it on your on repo
#
tantek
bnvk - we tried that - in progress - and none of them worked out
#
tantek
so we decided "works in progress" is insufficient
#
bnvk
hrm, strange
#
tantek
we just ended up with a bunch of abandoned / dead projects
#
tantek
so those are all gone now
#
tantek
"in progress" = use your own repo
#
tantek
is it running live on your own site? on multiple sites - great let's put it in a shared space for others to try out
#
bnvk
well, thanks for the encouragement and assuming a new effort is already abandoned + dead ;)
#
bnvk
I didn't realize such decision had been made about the "official" GH account

#

#

Ok, I'll tell them that when I see them next
#
bnvk
I don't always read back in the logs every day, so you probably had the conversation- I might have been in the room, this is just news to me
#
bnvk
onto more productive things
#
tantek
bnvk - think of it from the perspective of people that come to the indieweb gh and expect to find stuff they can install and use
#
tantek
that's the bar we should meet there
#
tantek
ironically, just like a store would ;)
#
tantek
but yeah, we should write that up somewhere on the wiki - about the indieweb gh
#
tantek
hoping to track down the discussion in the IRC logs so we can make it easily discoverable on the wiki
#
bnvk
thats' funny to be using Github like that, it's very counter how I think of it
#
tantek
bnvk - it looks bad for communities to have a bunch of dead projects in it - which is what had happened to the indieweb org
#
tantek
it looks like the community is dead
#
tantek
so we pruned it back to stuff that was still in active use
#
GWG
Is that why you can't pull the battery anymore on most phones?
#
tantek
GWG - "cost savings"
#
bnvk

#

#

bret - what's the use case?
#
tantek
we used to spend lots of time marking up things in #microformats for the sake of marking them presuming we'd figure out what to do with the structured data later (hand wave search engines hand wave)
#
bret
Allowing an IDE or text editor to query documentation on a specific item in the docs
#
tantek
and it turned out that was nearly always a waste of time
#
tantek
unless you were building the consuming application yourself as well
#
tantek
bret - full text search / indexing is "good enough" for that use case
#
bnvk
tantek: we're errring towards the w3c standard for app manifests as opposed to the FireFox OS standard- good call?
#
tantek
bnvk - you sure you're pointing to the latest w3c standard?
#
tantek
because Mozilla folks have been editing that at W3C, and that's what Firefox OS follows
#
tantek
just be sure you're not referencing some *old* W3C spec
#
tantek
which happens A LOT
#
bnvk
latest w3c, it hink

#

#
binbasti
it's just that " a W3C spec that no one implements" is just missing a "yet" in between
#
tantek
what's the diff?
#
tantek
with the FirefoxOS marketplace spec?
#
bnvk
tantek: so this link https://w3c.github.io/manifest/ is the current W3C that FFOS is following?
#
tantek
I thought the W3C spec was based on the Firefox OS work
#
binbasti
it's not
#
jancborchardt
well – FF OS definitely does not implement that as of now. But it sounds like it will in the future, right?
#
binbasti
tantek: yes
#
binbasti
"based on", not "following"
#
binbasti
jancborchardt: yes, it will most likely
#
bnvk
key diffs are the icon structuring and the "launch_path": "/index.html" vs. "start_url": "/start.html"
#
binbasti
if you're interested you can follow almost all development and discussion via github issues and pull requests
#
tantek
I'd expect FFOS to follow the spec that Mozillians are helping edit yes :)
#
binbasti
and provide input as well
#
tantek
bnvk - yeah I was just comparing their JSONs
#
tantek
noticed that too
#
tantek
binbasti - thanks for the clarification
#
binbasti
sure, np
#
tantek
looks like the devmo docs are for *shipping* FirefoxOS versions https://developer.mozilla.org/en-US/Apps/Build/Manifest - and I'd expect that new(er) FirefoxOS versions would support the updated manifest fields.
#
tantek
so at some point https://developer.mozilla.org/en-US/Apps/Build/Manifest should be updated, and may mention the old fields in a backward compat section (I hope)
#
bnvk
OK, so the w3c one is the best?!
#
tantek
bnvk - depends on what you mean by "best" ;)
#
tantek
what are your values/principles for evaluating?
#
bnvk
well- needing to be updated to be current at the longest date from now
#
binbasti
what's the use case? sorry, missed that part
#
tantek
binbasti: great question :)
#
binbasti
the good thing is the new spec will be extensible by specification
#
bnvk
tantek: can't tell if that was trolling snark or not ;)
#
tantek
bnvk - just applauding binbasti for their methodology :)
#
binbasti
well, that's the idea we started with when we founded 5apps
#
binbasti
so you'll need all possible manifests, if you actually want to install these apps
#
binbasti
as longs as they're different
#
binbasti
and just for the store itself i'd probably use an extended w3c manifest. but if you need extensions already, you should give that as input to the editors, because it might end up in the core spec
#
binbasti
i mean as a developer you want as many manifests as possible
#
tantek
^^^^ what binbasti said
#
tantek
rather than extend w3c manifest, please give input to it instead
#
bnvk
binbasti: gotcha- I wish Garret could make it out today. Yah we're going with an extended w3c manifest
#
bnvk
tantek: give input?
#
binbasti
they're trying to define "one manifest to rule them all" basically, so if you have a valid use case that's not yet discussed, they need to know about it
#
tantek
bnvk: it says in the spec how to give input: " If you wish to make comments regarding this document, please send them to public-webapps@w3.org (subscribe, archives). "
#
bnvk
tantek: oh yah, definitely- I was using extend + give input similarly
#
bnvk
yah once we've explored our problem space enough and have something work I'll do that
#
tantek
bnvk - "extend" sounds like "make up your own fields and add them"
#
bnvk
well- yah, that's I mean for this very moment
#
tantek
whereas input is more like, hey we have this use-case (citation with URL describing), and for that we don't see any existing feature in the w3c manifest, so we're going to add a new property, e.g. sampleNewPropertyname
#
tantek
at least send that as an email as requested by the document/group
#
tantek
before extending it
#
binbasti
github is actually just as good for this one. if it's a thing, marcos will put it on the list at some point
#
tantek
I would consider public documentation of the use-case(s) you need your extension(s) for a pre-requisite
#
tantek
binbasti - if github is just as good for that, perhaps let marcos know to update the spec to say so next to the email list?
#
binbasti
good point
#
binbasti
i'll ask about it
#
tantek
is also annoyed with W3C spec templates that burry the "how to give input / feedback" info
#
tantek
s/burry/bury
#
Loqi
tantek meant to say: is also annoyed with W3C spec templates that bury the "how to give input / feedback" info
#
tantek
"Status of This Document" is not where I'd look for "Where to give feedback"
#
tantek
(i.e. why it wasn't immediately apparent to bnvk *how* to give input - just from viewing the spec)
#
tantek
(bnvk, to be clear, I am saying that is not your fault)
#
tantek
binbasti - if marcos feels free to do so, I'd even make a separate subhead section inside status for "How to give feedback" for the email / github issues links
#
tantek
that stuff needs to be more discoverable
#
binbasti
actually http://w3c.github.io/manifest/ has it directly in the head

question: what would you expect the micropub request to create a bookmark to look like?
#
Loqi
aaronpk: tantek left you a message 6 minutes ago: heads-up re: Cambridge, now that we're filling up, Sandro (who works at MIT) has volunteered that he can reserve a room for 40 people - 40 chairs and 9 tables at MIT for the curation of the Cambridge IndieWebCamp.

aaronpk: just a url field

h=entry url=xxx?

I have. Doesn't seem to cover this scenario, KartikPrabhu

Or it's not clear to me. Should have I have a rel-author link to the same page?
#
KartikPrabhu
aaronpk: oh hmmm h=entry bookmark-of=xxx maybe?
#
aaronpk
that makes sense
#
KartikPrabhu
gregor`: hmmm will look into it
#
gRegor`
Let me try that and see what indiewebify thinks of it

gRegor`: if the author information is outside the h-entry, you have to use rel=author on the permalink page to point to the author's canonical home page
#
gRegor`
tantek: Would a rel-author="" (implying same page) work?
#
tantek
gRegor`: ouch that is an ugly hack!
#
gRegor`
That's what I have for now. Demos are coming up soon, so I will probably leave that for now. Just curious in general
#
gRegor`
Hm
#
tantek

No tables, responsive layout, and the event feed is harvested from the events page -- updates automatically. :)

#

tantek: not yet. aaronpk and peat will need to work on getting it up somewhere that we can test with content. Yes, it's responsive.

I think we could merge to the official repo, spend a few hours hacking and testing one of these evenings to wrap it up ... or roll back to the current design as needed. Happy to volunteer an evening or two this coming week to help out.

I think the reader acts a micropub client
#
bret
and is the posting interface
#
tantek
bret - whoa - so it can write posts for you!!!
#
bret
yeee!
#
tantek
so its a readerwriter client
#
bret
"It actualy does make a post"
#
tantek
does it support PuSH for showing items in realtime when they're posted?
#
crystal_
bnvk1: you missed my demo? ;)
#

can you see previous comments on an item? (so you don't repeat something)
#

#
tantek
benwerd - it was amazing!
#
tantek
just don't tell winer you've just replaced opml
#
benwerd
totally didn't mention that it's agnostic to RSS and h-feeds - so if you have people with legacy feeds, it'll work with them
#
bnvk1
who is the fellow in PDX speaking now?

did he say "twisted protocol"? what is that?
