danlyke It's never been either square or the width of an "M" (ie: the definition we used when I used to hand-set cold type), and on some of the stock fonts it ends up horrendously wrong. It's been years since I said "screw this, I'll never use it again" (and years since I touched CSS for more than minor tweaks), but it's never been usable as a base unit the way it should be.
