bengo wrt views, about 9 months ago I tried making a sort of 'general purpose' activity serializer that worked this way. It new how to serialize certain objectTypes, but would always fall back to something generic like just looking for a .displayName https://github.com/gobengo/activity-element/blob/master/src/index.js#L24
