there appears to be a pattern of people rejecting Twitter, then saying "join me on (this other silo)"
#
tantek
e.g. ello
#
tantek
then the mastodon.social instance of mastodon
#
tantek
are there others?
#
tantek
is this a broader pattern that needs naming? silo to silo jumping?
#
KartikPrabhu
does't this happen with every new silo?
#
KartikPrabhu
"join me on FB" instead of on Orkut and so on
#
tantek
KartikPrabhu: not every, just the tweet-like clones
#
tantek
I vaguely remember old pitches to "join me on identica" instead of Twitter from folks
#
tantek
this is a subtle specific variant of a monoculture bias
#
tantek
of jumping from one silo to another likely monoculture
#
tantek
what is ello?
#
Loqi
Ello is microblogging silo similar to Twitter or Tumblr for posting short status update notes and pictures https://indieweb.org/Ello

#
tantek
anyway I added some context to the criticism of Mastodon.social in that regard (people pitching it on twitter as an alternative to join - the site, rather than the software)

is there an indieweb analog of "someone is typing a comment" that happens on FB?
#
aaronpk
I was thinking about that too!
#
Loqi
aaronpk: cweiske left you a message 9 hours, 13 minutes ago: the robots s/value/content/ patch would be very helpful, too
#
aaronpk
Like a pre webmention webmention
#
aaronpk
could just model it off the slack API, their implementation is good
#
KartikPrabhu
i mean is it a good UI in the first place?
#
KartikPrabhu
I find it annoying when it says "someone is typing" and nothing happens

aaronpk: thinking more about pre-mention (yes I am making up a name because everyone is) here is an idea; 1. micropub client pre-fetches the webmention endpoint of the post being replied to 2. As the poster is typing, the webmention client sends a POST about "someone is typing" 3. the webmention endpoint or other server code then uses "realtime tech" of some sort to update that in the browser ?

does anyone have a UI for @-mentioning people while posting? For example FB pulls up a list (ordered in some priority according to people in the conversation) to select. In FB you can pick the first name or lastname; but possibly one could pick a nickname (?)

#

What is inkstone?
#

InkStone (formerly MobilePub) is a web app for posting various items to your website using micropub https://indieweb.org/inkstone
#

working on adding webmentions to Habari :-)
#
KartikPrabhu
what is Habari?
#
Loqi
Habari is a php based blogging platform based on OOP and MVC architecture https://indieweb.org/Habari
#
miklb
I might need to give a better description for that lol
#
KartikPrabhu
and add a indieweb examples section if you are using it on your site
#
miklb
I'm not. I currently use Jekyll, but if I can get WM into Habari, I probably will switch back, then will definitely add it to the wiki
#
miklb
Habari was all but dormant, but me and another dev are trying to revive it
#
miklb
current discussion is whether to extend the core pingback plugin or have a separate WM plugin. I'm advocating for extending pingback and use that as fall back.
#
gRegorLove
Worth documenting there, in case others come across it and are interested as well.

A really frustrating UX thing for me on FB: If it's a photo post, it defaults to the "theater" UI where the photo is big and the comments are off the side. Doesn't work well when the comments become lengthy (and are really more of the focus).
#
gRegorLove
This specifically was a screenshot of some text information and it spawned an in-depth conversation.
#
aaronpk
yeah srsly
#
KartikPrabhu
how would the one distinguish between those cases?
#
KartikPrabhu
they both have an image and comments. for photos that people mostly seem to post on FB the theatre view seems fine
#
aaronpk
is it a screenshot vs photo thing?
#
KartikPrabhu
i think gRegorLove wants the comment discussion to be more emphasised. But for majority of photos/images I have seen posted on FB the comments are not interesting at all
#
KartikPrabhu
mostly comments are "wow", or "nice pic" or something
snarfed joined the channel
#
gRegorLove
I honestly just wish there was a permalink that's always in the FB feed view, and then click the photo to open in theater view.
#
gRegorLove
I used to be able to manually take off the "&theater" from the URL and it worked, but it's redirecting to it now.
#
KartikPrabhu
yeah makes sense
#
gRegorLove
I ended up going to the person's stream and scrolling down so it was easier to read.
#
KartikPrabhu
URL shows you the post and clicking photo shows the photo
