# 17:28 GWG I'm watching a discussion of the changes to WordPress's release cycle. I am getting more worried about my participation.
KevinMarks_, ehlovader, sl007 and awolf joined the channel
# 17:38 GWG And my participation usually involves trying to get things that represent my Indieweb philosophy.
ehlovader and [schmarty] joined the channel
# 17:48 GWG [schmarty]: I'm still vague on some details. I've been trying to get answers. But this is what I know.
# 17:49 GWG No set releases in 2017. Maintenance releases will still continue (4.7.1 and so on)
# 17:49 GWG But the release cycle will focus on three feature areas that will dictate when they do a major release: REST API, Editor, and Customizer.
awolf joined the channel
# 17:50 GWG Now, removing the release cycles in favor of saying that a major feature is going to dictate a release as opposed to an arbitrary date is fine...but what does it do to the smaller improvements I work on? Or trying to get things like webmentions into Core, for example?
# 17:56 tantek GWG, I would suggest trying to get webmention+vouch into wp core rather than just webmention.
# 17:57 GWG tantek: pfefferle and I haven't gotten to Vouch.
# 17:57 tantek GWG, I realize that. I'm looking at it from the perspective of wp core being a much bigger spam target, and thus likely requiring vouch to even be feasible on day 1
# 17:58 GWG The next project, other than making some major changes now that Core has the structure we need(came in in 4.7) is to update the Semantic Linkbacks code.
# 17:58 GWG Also, we both agree on a deleted posts project
# 17:59 GWG So, my agenda is to finish the Location improvements I want, then make some minor changes elsewhere, then work on that.

# 18:18 Zegnat Any interesting weekend projects been happening?
# 18:24 tantek Zegnat, I've been looking into data export/ownership features of various GPS/running watches
# 18:24 tantek I've been using Nike+ Run Club (iOS app) to track my runs, and most recently, it stopped working on Thursday.
# 18:25 tantek It crashed while trying to save my run that morning, and now it just crashes on launch
# 18:25 tantek I tried powering off my iPod and it still crashes on launch
# 18:25 Zegnat Do you cary the iPod on the run, or are you looking at watches because you would like to leave the iPod behind?
# 18:25 tantek so now I need to find an alternative to track my running so I'm looking at various watches since I might as well get something that has GPS, altitude etc.
# 18:26 tantek I carry the iPod on my runs (probably still will to take photos)
# 18:26 GWG tantek: What is the end goal in tracking it?
# 18:27 tantek GWG, there are multiple goals. Long term I like to see how I am progressing. Short term there is a sense of confirmation of accomplishment (which helps reinforce the habit)

# 18:27 [kevinmarks] Are you looking at Android wear watches? Mine was pretty reliable until the charger was stolen
# 18:28 tantek Zegnat does owntracks keep track of distance traveled over time?
# 18:28 Zegnat That was the one glenn was showing, I think in Düsseldorf, for his tracking project. Open-source and could easily send data to your own server.
# 18:28 tantek Also I've yet to find an android device I like - e.g. one without a cell antenna, like an android equivalent of an iPod
# 18:29 tantek and it looks like the GPS watches are much more accurate (from seeing friends use them)
# 18:29 Zegnat I do not fully remember what OwnTracks did or did not track
# 18:29 tantek (and they don't require connecting to any other devices in order to function)
# 18:30 Zegnat I know glennjones was never happy with OwnTracks on Android because of MQTT, but as you use an iPod I thought it might be an option for you still

# 18:32 sknebel MQTT is (MQ Telemetry Transport), a lightweight pub-sub protocol over TCP most commonly used in IoT applications.
# 18:35 sknebel the iOS version of owntracks supports HTTP as well
# 18:35 aaronpk hmm at some point i'm going to not want to keep updating my own ios gps tracking app, maybe i should look into owntracks
# 18:35 Zegnat Yes, Glenn was using HTTP mode. Android did not have an HTTP option back then (reading the docs, it might be they support it now).
# 18:38 tantek just downloaded Strava which lots of my friends use
# 18:39 Zegnat aaronpk, this might be relevant for your site: “OwnTracks reports the device's battery level remotely” ;)
# 18:41 tantek kevinmarks I don't know what that means or how it's relevant
# 18:45 Zegnat Hmm, reading the OwnTracks documentation, it doesn’t seem like they will be able to track runs :( It posts information when the mobile OS tells it you have “moved a significant distance”
# 18:46 tantek yeah I vaguely remember that from glenn's demo
# 18:46 tantek hm strava requires bday for sign-up. that's annoying
# 18:47 [kevinmarks] I assume that you want the combination of GPS and WiFi so it works in city and countryside.
# 18:47 aaronpk this is the problem with existing GPS apps, none of them work the way I want them to
# 18:47 aaronpk Moves is the closest, although even it doesn't provide the resolution I want

# 18:48 Zegnat I was hoping OwnTracks would be able to do offline constant tracking, that I get to upload, but doesn’t look like it.
# 18:48 Zegnat Thought don’t take my word for it. You should probably ask Glenn. He has toyed with several apps, he told us over a beer in Brighton.
# 18:49 aaronpk Zegnat: yeah my app works well offline, that way I can use it on planes and such
# 18:49 aaronpk maybe the solution is to make my app send data in owntracks format and then try to find some more people to help maintain it
# 18:50 sknebel Zegnat: if I understand the docs correctly OwnTracks buffers messages it can't send right now
# 18:51 Zegnat But you can’t set it to poll more often, sknebel. Looks like it will always run in the background only waking when the OS tells it you moved.
# 18:51 Zegnat It might wake and find it can’t send, but that doesn’t help you with accurate run tracking
# 18:51 aaronpk there are a half a dozen different settings for how iOS deals with background location, so "when the OS tells you it moved" isn't even the whole story
# 18:52 Zegnat aaronpk, sharing your app would be interesting. There might be software like it already, but it looks like their community site will not let me use the search function without signing up for an account.
# 18:52 tantek hmm - looks like Strava has updated to work on iPod touch!
# 18:53 tantek ok I think I'm going to try out how it records and see what happens
# 18:56 tantek hmm I'm impressed with how much of strava.com works w/o JS

# 21:30 Zegnat Is it PESOS when I bookmark a page in my browser using the normal browser tools and then syndicate that bookmark to my website?
tantek and ehlovader joined the channel
# 21:35 miklb Zegnat I wouldn't think so. If you bookmarked to something like Pinboard 1st, then your site, that would be more PESOS.
