#GWGI'm watching a discussion of the changes to WordPress's release cycle. I am getting more worried about my participation.

#GWGAnd my participation usually involves trying to get things that represent my Indieweb philosophy.

#[schmarty]GWG: can you give us a sense of what's changing?
#GWG[schmarty]: I'm still vague on some details. I've been trying to get answers. But this is what I know.
#GWGNo set releases in 2017. Maintenance releases will still continue (4.7.1 and so on)
#GWGBut the release cycle will focus on three feature areas that will dictate when they do a major release: REST API, Editor, and Customizer.

#GWGNow, removing the release cycles in favor of saying that a major feature is going to dictate a release as opposed to an arbitrary date is fine...but what does it do to the smaller improvements I work on? Or trying to get things like webmentions into Core, for example?
#tantekGWG, I would suggest trying to get webmention+vouch into wp core rather than just webmention.
#GWGtantek: pfefferle and I haven't gotten to Vouch.
#tantekGWG, I realize that. I'm looking at it from the perspective of wp core being a much bigger spam target, and thus likely requiring vouch to even be feasible on day 1
#GWGThe next project, other than making some major changes now that Core has the structure we need(came in in 4.7) is to update the Semantic Linkbacks code.
#GWGAlso, we both agree on a deleted posts project
#tantekIt crashed while trying to save my run that morning, and now it just crashes on launch
#tantekI tried powering off my iPod and it still crashes on launch
#ZegnatDo you cary the iPod on the run, or are you looking at watches because you would like to leave the iPod behind?
#tantekso now I need to find an alternative to track my running so I'm looking at various watches since I might as well get something that has GPS, altitude etc.
#tantekI carry the iPod on my runs (probably still will to take photos)
#tantekGWG, there are multiple goals. Long term I like to see how I am progressing. Short term there is a sense of confirmation of accomplishment (which helps reinforce the habit)
#tantekZegnat does owntracks keep track of distance traveled over time?
#ZegnatThat was the one glenn was showing, I think in Düsseldorf, for his tracking project. Open-source and could easily send data to your own server.
#tantekAlso I've yet to find an android device I like - e.g. one without a cell antenna, like an android equivalent of an iPod
#tantekand it looks like the GPS watches are much more accurate (from seeing friends use them)
#ZegnatI do not fully remember what OwnTracks did or did not track
#tantek(and they don't require connecting to any other devices in order to function)
#ZegnatI know glennjones was never happy with OwnTracks on Android because of MQTT, but as you use an iPod I thought it might be an option for you still
#[kevinmarks]I was responding to "an Android device I like"
#[kevinmarks]Mind you, I haven't tried an android watch with an iOS main device
#ZegnatHmm, reading the OwnTracks documentation, it doesn’t seem like they will be able to track runs :( It posts information when the mobile OS tells it you have “moved a significant distance”
#tantekyeah I vaguely remember that from glenn's demo
#tantekhm strava requires bday for sign-up. that's annoying
#aaronpkZegnat: oh, then that's a dealbreaker for me
#[kevinmarks]I assume that you want the combination of GPS and WiFi so it works in city and countryside.
#aaronpkthis is the problem with existing GPS apps, none of them work the way I want them to
#[kevinmarks]Google My Tracks used to do that well, but they killed it.
#ZegnatI was hoping OwnTracks would be able to do offline constant tracking, that I get to upload, but doesn’t look like it.
#ZegnatThought don’t take my word for it. You should probably ask Glenn. He has toyed with several apps, he told us over a beer in Brighton.
#aaronpkZegnat: yeah my app works well offline, that way I can use it on planes and such
#aaronpkmaybe the solution is to make my app send data in owntracks format and then try to find some more people to help maintain it
#sknebelZegnat: if I understand the docs correctly OwnTracks buffers messages it can't send right now
#ZegnatBut you can’t set it to poll more often, sknebel. Looks like it will always run in the background only waking when the OS tells it you moved.
#ZegnatIt might wake and find it can’t send, but that doesn’t help you with accurate run tracking
#aaronpkthere are a half a dozen different settings for how iOS deals with background location, so "when the OS tells you it moved" isn't even the whole story
#Zegnataaronpk, sharing your app would be interesting. There might be software like it already, but it looks like their community site will not let me use the search function without signing up for an account.
#tantekhmm - looks like Strava has updated to work on iPod touch!
#tantekok I think I'm going to try out how it records and see what happens
#aaronpkhm only one listed example using markup and it now requires login to see

#[kevinmarks]Does Firefox still store bookmarks as html links in the file system? If so you could watch that file at OS level

#Sebseltantek I use Strava and was planing on teaching Bridgy how to use it. API seems good for things. But I'm injured atm, so no running no likes no Bridgy...
#Zegnat[kevinmarks], I just found out that arewewebextensionsyet.com lists the bookmark events for Firefox. So now I am no longer sure, it might just work. Guess I know what I will be working on this week.
