#
GWG
Istanbul? Not Constantinople?
#
tantek
recently added locations to his posts
#
tantek
for privacy it is on the level of city and state
#
tantek
he also marked them up with mf2
#
tantek
h-adr with a locality region and hidden span for the country
#
tantek
but did want to include it to make parsing it easier
#
tantek
tantek: you can use the <data> element instead of a hidden span
#
KartikPrabhu
GWG: just like New York, not New Amsterdam!
#
tantek
now showing microformats2 on a Map!
#
tantek
using Google's geocoding API to convert cities to lat long to display on a map
#
tantek
because their API had the highest free level
#
GWG
KartikPrabhu: Song reference.
#
tantek
clicking on SF expands that marker into two posts there
#
KartikPrabhu
tantek: link to said map, very curious!
#
tantek
now showing western new york, clicking zooms in, zooms in again
#
tantek
very cool!
#
tantek
have not put the link anywhere publicly yet
#
tantek
ben wants to develop it a bit more
#
tantek
doing live demo for us in person!
#
KartikPrabhu
I was thinking that something similar could be used for face-tagging in photos
#
tantek
it's a separate UI from his website
#
tantek
you put the URLs you want to look at into a text box
#
tantek
it's looking at all the URLs, retrieving each one, parsing it for mf2, and then sending all the cities to Google's geocoding API, then plotting them all
#
tantek
it's a node application, server running behind the scenes
#
tantek
wanted to do it all clients side, but CORS prevents you from grabbing the contents of any arbitrary website
#
tantek
another reason is that needed some kind of API to do this geocoding, with an API key
#
tantek
and if he was hosting it on his site and doing it clientside, there was no way of getting around having to share the API key with everyone
#
tantek
having it in the context of a server means he can do it with his API key
#
tantek
also means if someone wants to try it out, they have to register their own API key
#
tantek
it's specified as an environment variable
#
tantek
as you get this running as a node server on your machine, you would just put in your API key
#
tantek
hoping to file off some of the rough edges soon and put it on github soon.
#
tantek
lesson learned from this project: how much of modern web development is finding libraries that other people have written and gluing it together. less than 200 lines total written for this.
#
tantek
because he is using Leaflet
#
tantek
what is Leaflet
#
Loqi
Leaflet is http://leafletjs.com/ an open source JS library for mobile friendly interactive maps https://indieweb.org/Leaflet
#
tantek
using the microformat-node library to the parsing of the microformats
#
tantek
and then a couple of other javascript niceties
#
tantek
those two are doing the heavy lifting, and his code is getting the data flowing
#
tantek
used a 3rd party add-on for Leaflet to cluster markers with a count, where you can click on it and zoom in

a bit frustrating - they planned for 5.000 people and had maybe 400 today…
#
sketchess
Maybe tomorrow more. It's Friday then.
#
sketchess
Week days aren't always as much visited as weekends. ;)
#
sl007
Yes, the basic problem was (from what I heard today): City of Dortmund did not give space in the city (weekend) so they did it on the Campus (Do-Sa). But there are only journalists and only a few students. 2. think so too
#
sl007
sebsel - again regarding the websub demo: The advantage is that you could demo the publisher part - that is only two more links in the header :
#
sketchess
I wish you luck for the next two days. It only can get better.

!tell jeremycherfas, schmarty we talked about interview streaming, this (while still under development) could be interesting: https://github.com/getfireside/fireside / https://dev.fr.sd/ streams low-quality, records high-quality in local browser and merges both sides afterwards
