Just generated the first draft of this week's newsletter! https://indieweb.org/this-week/2017-10-20.html I'll generate a draft again tomorrow, so please add to it before then! https://indieweb.org/this-week#How_to

Hah, the Mumble screenshot ^ Nice.

Hmm, maybe I should move that Mumble screenshot down the list, so the other photos get priority

Zegnat: you could make the first post of the newsletter a kind of summary or Table of Contents, with it's own image in it?

I have been thinking about bookmarks
#
GWG
I was thinking of implementing read vs unread.
#
j4y_funabashi
I used to use bookmarks and likes but now generally only use likes as they pretty much mean the same thing for me
#
GWG
Like has an emotional component
#
GWG
I want to eventually own my bookmarks
#
j4y_funabashi
do you currently use another service?
#
GWG
Pinboard
#
j4y_funabashi
I have had a little bookmarklet on my phone for most of this year and it has highlighted the fact that most of the content I post is photos + likes/bookmarks
#
GWG
I am considering writing a Pinboard importer.
#
j4y_funabashi
does pinboard have a 'mark as read' feature?
#
GWG
Yes
#
GWG
Or an unread one
#
j4y_funabashi
cool, looks like they have an api aswell so shouldn;t be too tricky to convert to micropub requests
#
GWG
Exactly
#
GWG
I'm not sure I would do an OwnMyBoard
#
GWG
I may just write a WordPress plugin
#
j4y_funabashi
an interesting thought came up in a recent IWC session - using likes/bookmarks as a way to build up a 'recommended reading' list
#
GWG
Recommended? For me or others?
#
j4y_funabashi
for you, so if you like a page with a feed, I could walk that feed and recommend other posts by that person
#
j4y_funabashi
kind of turns a like into an implicit follow
#
GWG
Interesting
#
GWG
One thing at a time
#
GWG
Or for me, 10
#
GWG
I am working on some other things, so haven't gotten to bookmarks
#
j4y_funabashi
Yeah, I have been enjoying the increase in activity on your site
#
GWG
Well, testing Own Your Swarm and Gram, and need to now build better local support now that I have data to play with
#
GWG
Also, when I am at home, less interesting
#
j4y_funabashi
I am slowly building up a reader backend system which aaronpk pointed out is actually called microsub
#
sknebel
what is microsub?
#
Loqi
Microsub is an early draft of a spec that provides a standardized way for clients to consume and interact with feeds collected by a server https://indieweb.org/microsub
#
j4y_funabashi
GWG: true, holidays always produce more interesting things to post about

#
GWG
I just checked in and did photos
#
GWG
What am I supposed to do with Swarm coins?
#
sknebel
buy stickers, so you can get more swarm coins
#
GWG
I meant when passed to my site
#
GWG
I think aaronpk displays them
EmreSoku_ joined the channel
#
sknebel
yes. I personally would probably not show them, since I don't know what use they'd have
#
Zegnat
I guess you could keep track of them, or something? I wonder if aaronpk does anything with them other than displaying them.
#
GWG
We'll find out when he wakes
#
GWG
But I have to agree with chrisaldrich that using Instagram and Swarm as just UIs to your website is easy enough.
[jeremycherfas], jeremycherfas, tantek, calumryan, EmreSoku_ and hs0ucy joined the channel
#
aaronpk
nah i just show them like comments
#
GWG
aaronpk: To what end?
#
aaronpk
it's just part of owning my swarm data i guess
#
aaronpk
it's there on swarm so i want it on my site too

https://cleverdevil.io/2017/microblog-is-now-my-primary-social-media-timeline is interesting to me. Are those all micro.blog published sources? Or is that an aggregation of external content? I cant tell. I'd like to know more
#
Loqi
[Jonathan LaCour] Micro.blog is now my primary social media timeline. https://cleverdevil.io/file/93f4bdb5d6215292bb0a2d5d4ed9794e/thumb.jpg

#
skippy
i see. thanks.
#
GWG
Do we have anyone doing read and unread for bookmarks?
#
GWG
Still looking at that
calumryan joined the channel
#
sknebel
I know some people have "want to read" posts, but I'm not sure anyone is explicitly having it as a state on bookmarks
[eddie] joined the channel
#
[eddie]
GWG: I've played with that but as a new "read" type rather than bookmark type. Because I had the desire to track videos to watch and articles to read
#
[eddie]
Unfortunately all of them are old enough they have fallen off the feeds on my site
#
[eddie]
But recently, I've been thinking "want to read/watch/etc" isn't a public post type for me as much as a channel in a microsub reader is the direction I want to head. (I have a half written blog post on this)
#
[eddie]
and then from there I can react with a bookmark for something important to remember or a like if I enjoyed it or a repost if I want to share it
#
GWG
I want to replace something like Pinboard or Pocket
#
[eddie]
Exactly, I'm trying to replace Instapaper
#
sknebel
I would probably just handle with a category on bookmark posts, at least as long I don't want a more complcated state progression
snarfed joined the channel
#
petermolnar
in the meanwhile, I'm on my way to move to Pocket
#
petermolnar
because metadata extraction from random website doesn't cover my reading of 'fun'
#
GWG
Why Pocket?
#
petermolnar
because their API exposes things like author
#
GWG
I already have metadata extraction
#
petermolnar
and because it works cross-platform cross-browser
#
petermolnar
more or less anything
#
petermolnar
I got tired of trying to reinvent the wheel
#
GWG
Been there
#
GWG
But WordPress is robust enough to handle what I want
#
petermolnar
I won't say I'm not having second thoughts about my move out of WordPress - some things are easier with a framework
#
petermolnar
but I do enjoy my current simplicity
#
GWG
I understand
#
GWG
I go both ways
#
GWG
I still would like to integrate my site with my bookmarks at some point
#
petermolnar
using Pocket doesn't mean I can't simply pull/pesos it
#
GWG
Even if I do a PESOS operation
#
petermolnar
or PASTA it ;)
#
sknebel
regarding readers, I wonder if any of the existing ones have useful enough APIs to use them as a backend
#
sknebel
yeah, or potentially even hosted ones
#
sknebel
oh, I hadn't seen miniflux before
#
sknebel
what is miniflux?
#
Loqi
Miniflux is minimalist feed reader software https://indieweb.org/Miniflux
#
skippy
i got fed up with the tt-rss author being such a jerk that I didn't want to use his work anymore.
#
skippy
and miniflux works great with sqlite, which is fine for my needs.

petermolnar

#
jeremycherfas
I have ublock on and it runs.
#
skippy
i have ublock origin and privacybadger
#
skippy
probably privacybadger blocking the vimeo cookies.
#
petermolnar
skippy thanks for pointing at miniflux, so far I really like it
#
skippy
aye. it scratches all my RSS itches. Although it's a little more finnicky about parsing problems, and marks feeds as "inactive" more aggressively than I'd like.
#
skippy
I keep meaning to find a way to fix that, but get distracted...
[keithjgrant] joined the channel
#
sknebel
wasn't clear to me from the website, does it have the "traditional google reader" view with the feeds at the left and the content in the main pane? or does it only have the stream-cnetric view?
#
skippy
default layout is "river of news" stream.
#
skippy
but there are some themes available that i've never tried https://miniflux.net/themes
#
GWG
I use tt-rss
#
GWG
But I am not attached to it
#
sknebel
skippy: thx, then I'll have to look for something else (or add my own frontend to it)
#
sknebel
e.g. miniflux feed parser seems to have custom rules to fetch extended content from sites that have only limited feeds, that's nice to have and needless busywork to replicate
#
skippy
sknebel: yeah, miniflux is certainly opinionated about presentation. i happen to like the opinion, but if your workflow or preferences are different than it might not be the best for you.

reading back to https://chat.indieweb.org/2017-10-16#t1508187613538000 and following, I'm not sure /excerpt is worthy of its own article, and rather is just one kind of /summary (so could be merged into a section there)
#
Loqi
[snarfed] ah ok. feel free to replace excerpt with a redirect there
