hello indieweb
#
KartikPrabhu
radiopetushki: hi
#

Hi radiopetushki
#
[kevinmarks]
Hi radiopetushki
#
radiopetushki
I am looking to implement this, I do have a few questions though
grantcodestmp2 joined the channel
#
[miklb]
awesome. You are in the right place
#
radiopetushki
I am relatively adept at server administration and deployment but am lacking in most development skills
#
radiopetushki
i.e i can read and write html + css to an extent
#
radiopetushki
i suppose my question is: do you have recommendations for user-friendly deployments of the platform or do you think it is feasible enough for me to go and start learning something like php to deploy some sort of lightweight CMS with indieweb in mind?
#
[miklb]
you can certainly start your own CMS, but you may find you want to start with an existing CMS that has support or plugins for IndieWeb stuff
#
[miklb]
or maybe you’d prefer a static site generator where there some prior art for doing IndieWeb stuff.
#
radiopetushki
I am currently using jekyll, which I like a lot despite the docs being a little hard to get my head around
#
radiopetushki
but i'd like to be able to post from mobile and when i don't have direct access to my server either
#
[miklb]
I have a jekyll-indieweb theme that I’m actually working on converting to a Jekyll theme gem.
#
radiopetushki
I am also really fond of micro.blog but alas did not come upon it until the window for registration closed
#
[miklb]
There are tools to hook up Jekyll to micropub. I did that before I switched to WordPress. Micropub would give you option to post via mobile
#
@calum_ryan
Depending on the centralized web of content silos to store, control and monitor your data as they please isn't necessarily a good thing for the open web in the long term. Join me and others supporting IndieWeb. Original post syndicated from https://calumryan.com #280characters
(twitter.com/_/status/928051942789734400)
#
radiopetushki
hmm that sounds promising
#
[miklb]
the micropub would require deploying with a one click to Heroku, so it would require some technical experience or desire to figure it out however.
#
Loqi
[voxpelli] webpage-micropub-to-github: Self-hosteable Micropub endpoint that publishes to Jekyll by committing to GitHub
#
radiopetushki
that I am fine with though, I would prefer it to be a self-hosted soultion
#
radiopetushki
perhaps I am asking too much for too little experience with development
#
[miklb]
if you would like to check out micro.blog you can use this invite code mb-400d7e while you figure out what you want to do
#
radiopetushki
oh wow, thanks!
grantcodes joined the channel
#
[miklb]
I have one more left if anyone else has been curious.
#
radiopetushki
do you have a favorite self-hostable microblogging platform?
#
[miklb]
That would probably be it. Otherwise would need to install Known or WordPress on a server, or stick with the static site generator and maybe look at my Jekyll theme. Can be served from GitHub or commit to GH and deploy to your own server. Others can chime in with other static options.
#
KartikPrabhu
what is static?
#
Loqi
A static site is a website that is served by a web server directly from the file system https://indieweb.org/static
#
radiopetushki
Thanks, I think I am going to try and get it going with my current jekyll-based static site
#
KartikPrabhu
radiopetushki: what is your URL?
#
radiopetushki
I don't have a domain associated with my server yet, I want to iron it out before I open it up to the (small) world
#
radiopetushki
also, right now I am running on a little flat-file CMS i found on github that I don't fully understand
#
KartikPrabhu
radiopetushki: I recommend getting a domain even if it only has a static homepage and then build up from there
#
radiopetushki
I have a domain with a static page: http://radiopetushki.net (no https support right now)
#
KartikPrabhu
no need to have a "full" site before showing it to the (small) world
#
KartikPrabhu
radiopetushki: that looks nice already
#
radiopetushki
haha, thanks
#
Loqi
nice
#
KartikPrabhu
radiopetushki: do you plan to build on that domain name?
#
radiopetushki
yes
#
KartikPrabhu
perhaps you should start by adding a simple h-card on that homepage
#
KartikPrabhu
what is h-card?
#
Loqi
h-card is the microformats2 vocabulary for marking up people, organizations, and venues on web sites https://indieweb.org/h-card
#
radiopetushki
Yes, that's a good idea.
tantek joined the channel
#
radiopetushki
great success, though it took me a few tries
#
radiopetushki
i need to learn to speak developer
#
KartikPrabhu
radiopetushki: is your h-card hidden?
#
radiopetushki
yes
#
KartikPrabhu
I would warn against that. Very easy for hidden data to rot away
#
KartikPrabhu
also, no need to learn to speak developer. I am not a dev either
#
radiopetushki
I think in the future when I implement the microblog, it will not be hidden
Exodist joined the channel
#
KartikPrabhu
also I would not put <link> elements in the body, since you have hidden them using a <a> would be fine.
#
radiopetushki
are they still valid if they exist in the head?
#
KartikPrabhu
<link> in the head is definitely valid.
#
KartikPrabhu
that is where they generally belong
#
KartikPrabhu
radiopetushki: I think now you should be able to log in and add yourself to https://indieweb.org/irc-people

what is follow
#
Loqi
follow is a common feature (and often UI button) in silo UIs (like Twitter) that adds updates from that profile (typically a person) to the stream shown in an integrated reader, and sometimes creates a follow post either in the follower's stream ("… followed …" or "… is following …") thus visible to their followers, and/or in the notifications of the user being followed ("… followed you") https://indieweb.org/follow

I still don't get twitter's reasoning for 280 chars
#
petermolnar
why is another limit any better than the previous one?
Exodist joined the channel
#
petermolnar
also, changing a limit like this is a fundamental change to a service like twitter
#
petermolnar
so what's the end goal, what do they think doubling char limit will result in?

petermolnar and kevinmarks: I have to say, having been using micro.blog with a 280 limit, the 280 limit does actually feel kind of perfect. Enough to say things in short fashion. If you reach over 280, it does naturally feel like it should be a blog post

140 was always incredibly short, though
#
dgold
160 was bad enough on sms
#
petermolnar
that's the point
#
aaronpk
agreed
#
aaronpk
looking forward to not trying to condense down to 140 anymore
#
petermolnar
140 chars was extremely restrictive, indeed, but that restricted world made twitter twitter imo; if you remove that, the only thing you get is a uniformized tumblr
#
dgold
petermolnar: Y u no like propr wrds?
#
petermolnar
oh, but I do; I never liked Twitter :D
#

what is the page we have for silo functionality convergence?
#

It looks like we don't have a page for "page we have for silo functionality convergence" yet. Would you like to create it?

Did it ever need to be shortnamed? Urls haven't counted toward char count for some time
#
[keithjgrant]
Also, i hate URL shorteners
#
aaronpk
before twitter started t.co'ing every URL it helped save characters
#
Zegnat
They might also be t.co’ing every URL for privacy reasons
#
Zegnat
Stefan was looking into that a bit, and will report back with his findings. He was intrigued when I told people that the rel="me"s also were getting shortened and reached out to some people about reasons why this might be.
#
aaronpk
they do it so they can track clicks
#
aaronpk
and disable links if they are spam/phishing
#
Zegnat
Reason he was looking into it was that the redirects aren’t just 302s, but some JS stuff. Some reasons he got was that it allows them to simulate rel=noopener and clear the referer.
#
aaronpk
pretty sure it sends an HTTP redirect with the right user agent string
#
Zegnat
With no UA, I think, if memory served right. But that’s obviously limited to … not browsers.
#
Zegnat
But Stefan promised a write-up about the subject, so we’ll see ;)

iirc Twitter's fallback JS redirect is for referrers on https => http links or something like that?
#

t.co always being https, I believe; destination can be either.
#
gRegorLove
Ran into something like that with indiewebify.me
wolftune joined the channel
#
Loqi
[gRegorLove] Well, this is getting weird. @kevinmarks's http://t.co/cjiYwEZLiC returns a 301 where most t.co profile links I've tested recently return a 200 with meta+javascript redirect. Christopher's http://t.co/agsxcOcLry does the latter, so I do think this is...
#
Zegnat
HTTPS -> HTTP loses Referer header according to spec.
