Perhaps the "right way" is just too hard
#
tantek
when push comes to shove people will work around the UI to make it work for their use-cases
#
Zegnat
That’s why Troy specifically shows the UI on the Microsoft Office tools in his post. Basically saying “you see this huge button up there, you could have clicked that”
#
tantek
yes, that part is helpful
#
Zegnat
I wonder if Gmail has any UI for this. I would not be surprised at all if more people and more people use web mail like that.
#
tantek
indeed
#
tantek
what's not helpful is saying things like "Email delegation is easily set up by your I.T. team."
#
Zegnat
If you are in parliament, it is definitely an IT issue. The network dept. should have set this up right. But especially smaller scale things, e.g. politicians at municipal scale, do have the same 3 people staff without the IT dept.
#
Zegnat
Agreed
#
cweiske
tantek, giving a microsoft office screenshot to someone using a totally different tool is not helpful either, apart as advertisement
#
cweiske
giving them a search term ("email delegation") is more helpful
#
cweiske
because it allows people to find more information
#
cweiske
because searching the web for the word in the screenshot will lead to microsoft office docs
#
Zegnat
cweiske, Troy is Microsoft MVP, so it isn’t all that weird that he is showing the screenshots of Microsoft tools
KartikPrabhu joined the channel
#
cweiske
I'm not questioning troys post but tanteks claim
#
Zegnat
I think it gets the point across that you do not need highly specialised software (just having Microsoft Office is fine), which is also an important point to make.
#
Zegnat
Better than pointing at GroupWise or some highly commercial big-company aimed thing that people aren’t likely to be familiar with.

i finally found some time to work on one of my biggest productivity challenges: my twitter contacts post a lot of relevant links, but i cannot affort reading through all the accompanying noise on twitter
#
sgreger
meet the "tweetharvester": a script that collects all links from my twitter stream; it still lacks some smart filtering etc. but i enjoy this already a lot

sgreger

#
sgreger
...i guess i have started to take first steps towards my personal "indie reader"?
#

Does sound like it sgreger
#

Except you subscribe on the Twitter side and not in your reader.

sgreger has 9 karma in this channel (11 overall)
#
sgreger
zegnat: yes, and i still believe in the value of being able to interact within the twittersphere where applicable. in the long run, of course, it would be cool to include also h-feed and rss subs in this tool
#
sgreger
i first might have to redesign the database structure, though. working on this already revealed some design flaws

what is reader
#
Loqi
what
#
sgreger
"A reader (or indie reader) in the context of the indieweb is the portion/feature integrated into an indieweb site that provides a way to read content from other indieweb sites, possibly including posts from the current site as well."
renem and LCubed joined the channel
#
sgreger
i am wondering is the definition of "indie reader" strictly limited to consuming indieweb feeds, where in reality one would probably want to subscribe also rss feeds and possibly other sources?
#
snarfed
sgreger: no it's not limited like that afaik
#
sgreger
aaronpk: yes, that is where the inspiration came from (triggering an old itch of mine). now thinking about merging that into one core tool of my workflow, including rss-/h-feeds as well
renem and [miklb] joined the channel
#
aaronpk
Awesome
#
sknebel
sgreger: re formats, at least the actual indieweb examples on the /reader page mostly include other formats. The mf2 side IMHO mostly gets focussed since that's how the added information (post-types like likes, ...) is expressed
#
aaronpk
my ideal indieweb reader also allows me to follow twitter searches as well, definitely not limited to microformats feeds
dougbeal|imac joined the channel
#
sknebel
what is microsub?
#
Loqi
Microsub is an early draft of a spec that provides a standardized way for clients to consume and interact with feeds collected by a server https://indieweb.org/microsub
#
sknebel
aaronpk: should monocle be added as an example already? or to experimental for now?
#
aaronpk
I guess so! it's in production now, just not available for public signups
HongPong and wolftune joined the channel
#
sgreger
oh, interesting. so a microsub server is a service running between a reader and a collection of feeds from various sources?
#
sknebel
yes. basically the backend for a reader
#
sgreger
maybe that is something i should consider
#
sgreger
decoupling the logic of the reader (presentation and interaction with feed items) from the logic of collecting and streamlining the content of feeds
#
@HongPong
if you are tired of the facebook / twitter / google silos check the #indieweb for the engineering division of the escape hatch https://indieweb.org/

#

#
tantek
!tell cweiske agreed about your point about giving a screenshot about a totally different tool. my critique was more about use of "easily", like "simply", or "just", it's not a helpful encouragment, if anything makes the person feel ashamed for "not getting it".

#
[manton]
I'm going to send an email to those folks this week too and could mention the RSVP page.

#
gRegorLove
Yeah, they're posting activity. I haven't revisited that since I was playing with it 2016-08. I do want to link them to archives.
#
tantek
ok this is odd, https://gregorlove.com/2017/12/ says " No articles were published. " which I suppose is literally true, but I did expect to your notes there

#
gRegorLove

yeah that makes sense (no notes on homepage), however I'd expect them in archives

#
