@jerbotnet
@beeple @thecpodcast @albertomoss @Ashthorp @gmunk Enjoyed the talk. Been thinking a lot (too much?) about these issues lately. In terms of staying in contact with a collective or group of like-minded artists... RSS/Atom feeds aren't dead yet and http://indieweb.org has some good advice in how to "own your shit".

@joe4ska If you're in the Pasadena area in the next few weeks, let's have coffee and I can give you the top down to make the intro easier. Until then you can take a look at the wiki https://indieweb.org/Getting_Started or if you're impatient try https://indieweb.org/Getting_Started_on_WordPress.

Thanks for linking mlopatka. Sad to see it still doesn't address the fact that Mozilla may push extensions on people without showing any thing about an update / installation going on 😞

#
cweiske
but that's autoupdate. every software provider with auto update functionality can give you this, always
#
[mlopatka]
Well (my opinion only) I’m glad that we are owning the blame and have moved forward with an apology, and as cweiske says, I dont think it would be possible to make a decent product without that capability
#
Zegnat
They talk about pushing "an update to Firefox", but the way I understood this was that no such thing actually happened? It was literally installing the extension remotely into an existing Firefox? That's the real problem here imho. Auto update still gives a clear choice.
#
cweiske
it was pushed with a firefox update
#
Zegnat
If I didn't get that right that's on me. It never installed on my end so it is all second hand knowledge.
#
Zegnat
Aah alright
#
[mlopatka]
many firefox updates are pushed as addons when a fast hotfix is necessary
#
cweiske
[mlopatka], linux distributions show that software does not need to have autoupdate

#

you just need a OS that has proper sofware update support
#
[mlopatka]
I don’t mean it isnt possible in general, I mean it isnt possible given Mozilla’s current operational capacity
#
[mlopatka]
again, just my opinion
#
Zegnat
I guess I am mostly sad that none of the things that were brought up alongside this about SHIELD, about forced telemetry settings in non-stable releases, and user consent in general, get a mention in that blogpost.
#
[mlopatka]
I’m satisfied that a clear message has been publically posted that: we did something that caused a negative user experience and that it was indeed a user choice was not provided and should have been.
#
[mlopatka]
Mozilla has been pretty clear about SHIELD and about Telemetry preferences in general… for example: https://blog.mozilla.org/futurereleases/2017/09/06/data-just-living/

Interesting, https://www.hellointernet.fm/podcast/hi-93-mr-chompers discusses a case where an insurance company does not want to pay out after a burglary because the home owner had posted to social media showing that he wasn’t at home, “incentivising” the burglars.

It is interesting. E.g. CGP Grey mentions how he has stopped tweeting his weight because those tweets would make it clear when he was not at home with his internet-connected scales.
#

I think it's common sense. but maybe germans are more sensitive to this: don't publish data unless it's required

“Microformats2 is impossible to properly parse in JSON form” – hmm
#
KartikPrabhu
funny how so many people do it anyway
#
Zegnat
Well, as far as I know, the mf2 parsing spec has a JSON(-like) structure as output. So if it is impossible it sounds like the parsing spec is wrong :P
#
KartikPrabhu
or "impossible" is a misleading hyperbole
#
KartikPrabhu
or a an irrelevant complaint
