I simply can't find an open source video search engine with schema or microformats support and thumbnails. I'm having a hard time believing none exist. Does anyone have suggestions?

at risk: TinyLetter
#
tantek
what is TinyLetter
#
Loqi
TinyLetter is a message silo and service to organize email newsletters, with an optional blog-like web archive https://indieweb.org/TinyLetter
#
@pud
Article about a thing I made called TinyLetter, "The hearts of indie writers everywhere broke on Tuesday following an Inc. report that MailChimp will phase out the popular newsletter service TinyLetter.” http://www.businessinsider.com/tinyletter-will-fold-into-mailchimp-in-the-future-but-its-not-going-to-happen-in-2018-2018-1

It occurs to me that since we have site deaths, should we have a page for site-births?
camb joined the channel
#
chrisaldrich
Reason: I recall when Mastodon was starting up, many jumped on board to nudge it towards the IndieWeb which was useful.
#
chrisaldrich
I also saw today that noti.st is coming shortly, though in that case the founders are already indieweb friendly.
#
chrisaldrich
Then there are projects like the Evergreen reader which have recently added h-feed as a result of IndieWeb influence...
#
chrisaldrich
What is Evergreen?
#
Loqi
Evergreen is an open source feed reader for MacOS that is under development https://indieweb.org/Evergreen
#
Loqi
ok, I added "http://inessential.com/2018/01/25/evergreen_diary_9_on_indieweb" to the "See Also" section of /Evergreen
#
chrisaldrich
Such a site-births page could be interesting as an outreach tool... Worthwhile or not?
#
[kevinmarks]
I like the idea
snarfed joined the channel
#
tantek
chrisaldrich: there's a question of notability / relevance
#
tantek
site-deaths only chronicles at least somewhat relevant sites that have gone away (either by # s or by importance to standards / communities)
#
tantek
whereas with new sites, how do you know when they're "born" if they're relevant? (as opposed the numerous domains / single page sites people setup? )
#
tantek
not opposed to it - just not sure how to make it interesting / useful?
[eddie] joined the channel
#
tantek
just registered an account on notist to get it to copy my Lanyrd profile
#
tantek
what is notist
#
Loqi
notist is a forthcoming silo for hosting one's speaking events, slides, but also meant to collate feedback, tweets, photos, sketchnotes to create a permanent speaking portfolio https://indieweb.org/notist
#
tantek
"making copies"
#
tantek
took less than a minute I think
#
tantek
highly recommend it - no real downside to having them make a copy of your Lanyrd data AFAIK: https://noti.st
#
tantek
!tell chrisaldrich do you mind uploading your screenshot of the Lanyrd read-only notice from your blog http://boffosocko.com/2018/01/29/backing-up-lanyrd/ to /Lanyrd ?
#
Loqi
Ok, I'll tell them that when I see them next

[Chris Aldrich] Backing up Lanyrd
#
Loqi
ok, I added "https://xkcd.com/1782/" to the "See Also" section of /chat
#
chrisaldrich
tantek: thanks for the reminder, I'd forgotten to do it when I captured it for that note.
#
Loqi
chrisaldrich: tantek left you a message 1 minute ago: do you mind uploading your screenshot of the Lanyrd read-only notice from your blog http://boffosocko.com/2018/01/29/backing-up-lanyrd/ to /Lanyrd ?
#
chrisaldrich
the useful part for a site-birth is to know it's coming and secondly for those watching to be proactive about outreach.
#
tantek
why is it useful to know about any random site coming?
#
chrisaldrich
Perhaps most of us who are doing that already are doing it naturally enough without such a page...
#
tantek
there has to be some other criteria that you're implicitly applying
#
tantek
otherwise that would descend into noise (so many random new sites)
prtksxna joined the channel
#
chrisaldrich
There's certainly more to unpack than just a random site. Often sites are taking the failures of others and improving on them. Others may be creating entirely new and novel functionality that may be better IndieWebified from the start.
[cleverdevil] joined the channel
#
tantek
chrisaldrich: perhaps the "new users" and "new pages" on the wiki / newsletter are sufficient for that?
#
tantek
if it really is a relevant enough site to be worthy of outreach, then it likely deserves its own stub page on the wiki
#
chrisaldrich
As an example, Evergreen is an interesting reader which many here have discussed in the past, but it's taken a while to get it to nudge toward Indieweb friendliness, particularly given the baggage of legacy RSS.
#
tantek
and the newsletter accumulates those on a weekly basis
#
tantek
chrisaldrich: good example. when it was born it didn't really attract much attention. it only become relevant for outreach long *after* its "birth"
#
chrisaldrich
I think that given the relationships, Evergreen was discussed here quite soon after it's birth. Based on what I've heard it's just taken a while for it to evolve towards h-feed support.
#
chrisaldrich
I do agree with you that noise on such a page would be tough to tamp down...
#
chrisaldrich
I'll let it ruminate for a bit to see what becomes of it, but thought I'd write out some of the thought.
#
tantek
chrisaldrich: I think it could be useful to track, just as we track /timeline and /history (two other pages you may want to draw inspiration / examples from)
#
tantek
those are much more finely curated obviously
#
tantek
whoa notist import from Lanyrd already done!
#
tantek
filled with mf2!
#
tantek
- no URL s for the events tho
#
@ramsey
@ericlbarnes I’m using it. I likely won’t get much value out of it until I set up webmentions on my blog and hook things together with https://brid.gy. If you’re really interested in it, you should read up on the #IndieWeb project. That might make you even more interested.

what is mapzen
#
Loqi
It looks like we don't have a page for "mapzen" yet. Would you like to create it? (Or just say "mapzen is ____", a sentence describing the term)
#
tantek
Mapzen was a mapping platform using open-source map technologies (https://mapzen.com/about/), and is shutting down on 2018-01-31 (https://mapzen.com/blog/shutdown/).
