I'm pursuing some post-Summit homework of trying to get a IW reader set up. I am a little confused.
#
jmac
I got myself set up with an Aperture account, hurrah! It suggested that I paste a "microsub" <link> onto my homepage, which I did, but I kinda don't know why
#
jmac
It kinda feels like tucking a dotfile into my homepage's <head> element? If that makes sense? (Does it make sense?)
#
KartikPrabhu
jmac: if it is super-dev oriented maybe indieweb-dev is a better spot
#
jmac
Like, the idea from here is that I then use a wholly separate application as my actual header, and it will read my IW preferences from that element stored on my website, because my reader will know what my domain is? Is that correct?
#
jmac
No, this is me trying to be a (technically-apt) enduser for once
#
jmac
I just wanna use a reader
#
jmac
I just don't know what I'm doing or why
#
jmac
I guess what I'm asking is "OK, I logged into Aperture. Uhhhh now what"
#
KartikPrabhu
aaronpk: ^^
#
aaronpk
Guess I need some better onboarding instructions in Aperture
#
aaronpk
But, once you've added the link, you can log in to reader apps
#
jmac
aaronpk: That was my impression, but the two I've tried so far have complained that http://jmac.org doesn't have a micropub endpoint
#
Loqi
Jason McIntosh
#
jmac
Which, indeed, it does not
#
jmac
Loqi my friend
#
jmac
"The two I've tried so far" being Monocle and Indigenous
#
jmac
So either these are not reader apps in the way I expect, or I do have to go set up a micropub endpoint. I'm not sure which is true. (Perhaps both!)

jmac: If it helps any, https://alltogethernow.io/ is the only one that has succefully displayed feeds. I think I jamed up monocole trying to add baffle to it.
#
jmac
dougbeal: I tried that too, but couldn't even log in. :) ("Error getting auth url")
[mrkrndvs] joined the channel
#
aaronpk
hmm. Did Monocle complain about the Micropub endpoint too? I thought it didn't care about that
eli_oat joined the channel
#
jmac
aaronpk: Yeah, immediately after a login attempt: "missing_endpoint We didn't find a Micropub endpoint at your website"

jmac
(bright sides: (1) Hey, I got indieauth working, woooo (2) I am reminded why I got so excited about micropub at IWS and am doomed to set it up for myself. Eventually.)
#
aaronpk
jmac: whooops! my bad, I must have been lazy with that code in monocle!
#
aaronpk
I will update it to just disable all behavior that uses micropub if it can't find a micropub endpoint
#
jmac
Excellent
#
jmac
Until then, I have downloaded all of Manton's apps onto my iPhone, and now I'm checking out gRegorLove's indiebookclub, and that rounds it out for my initial one-week-on saturday-night post-IWS homework assignments
#
aaronpk
you won't be able to reply to things or favorite things, but you can still read stuff without micropub
#
jmac
yeah
#
jmac
All this is giving me food for thought on how I want my own IndieWeb setup, across my two domains.
#
jmac
I have been shy about publishing non-article posts to Fogknife, which I want to reserve for long-form articles; I didn't like the thought of it filling up with likes and notes and such
#
aaronpk
that's understandable
#
aaronpk
I took a different approach which is to make my "likes" never show up on my home page. they get a totally separate page on my site
#
aaronpk
many years ago, i used to have a separate blog site, but I moved those all to my main site when I gave up on the idea of maintaining any sort of separate persona for my blog posts
#
jmac
So I'm thinking it would make sense to set up a micropub service on jmac.org, and set aside a slice of that (a subdomain, perhaps) to hold all my posts of every type, and then POSSE just the article-type posts to Fogknife. With the goal that that website looks and works exactly the same as always.
#
aaronpk
interesting
#
jmac
Oh, ha, it sounds like I am thinking of what you have already given up on
#
jmac
I guess I consider Fogknife like a zine, separate from my web-presence, with its own title and everything, though it's explicitly only my own voice
#
aaronpk
oh i'm not saying it's a bad idea, I just wasn't willing to maintain that. just not my thing
#
aaronpk
I like thinking of it as a zine tho :)
#
dougbeal
Ah, I had a baffle microsub reference I had to remove. I guess Together handles multiple links
#
@aaronpk
↩️ @andymci Agreed, and an open web doesn't imply a public web. We're experimenting with private content too! https://indieweb.org/private_posts

Hi Folks, looking for a little advice. Hopefully this is the right place. If not I'd appreciate a pointer in the right direction. I've set up an account on https://aperture.p3k.io. Added a few sources. Logged on to https://alltogethernow.io which says "Nothing to Show". Nothing shows up in Indigenous either. Blogs I am logging onto these services with is at http://johnjohnston.info/blog/ I've no clue where to start looking? Blog not at top l

Apparently, the idea of self-hosting own blogs is called #IndieWeb now (kinda unusual thought in the age of FB/Instagram/Medium), https://indieweb.org/principles. The rationale reminded me @shanselman's interview @TWiT Triangulation

#
[johnjohnston]
[eddie] Thanks, no rush. I am logging on iOS. I can post to my blog (as drafts) and don’t see the notice about no subs anymore. But don’t see posts from channels listed. Have a great Bday
#
[eddie]
Hmm interesting. Do you see the “Home” channel?

On the main screen it should have a list of Channels which as a new account should probably home and notifications

Just added RelMeAuth to my site (https://indieweb.org/RelMeAuth). It assumes that I control my domain, so if the site on my domain has one or more links with rel="me" it can send me to for example http://github.com log me in there and verify that the account points back.

After 6 years, I've closed the comments on Bootstrap. 280,000 of them. 4.2million seconds spent reviewing for threats and vitriol. 1,167 hours of dread and hesitation. 146 working days lost to ignorance and bile. Two dozen Police investigations. 10 hours sleep last night. https://pbs.twimg.com/tweet_video_thumb/DhmtJCpXcAAw5Za.jpg

kevinmarks, that Bootstrap related tweet — has nothing to with Bootstrap the Web UI framework right?

KartikPrabhu
tantek__: no, it seems like an indiewebsite https://cookingonabootstrap.com/

and it looks like WordPress at that
#

so that tweet about turning off comments is specifically about turning off native blog comments, in particular WordPress comments

goes to show that no amount of current plugins etc. stops the harms listed in the tweet from bad comments

!tell dgold from a few days ago, if you'd like to add more critical details with citations re: .io domain, I encourage you to do so here: https://indieweb.org/short-domains#io - good to have those criticisms documented with articles, plus makes it easier for others to naturally discover the problems with .io and avoid it, instead of having to depend on explaining it to everyone one at a time
