dmcweeney: In your question does “page” height refer to viewport (the browser window) height or the total height of the rendered content of the HTML page?
#
[jgarber]
dmcweeney: Oh! You may be able to achieve that effect using a CSS gradient applied to the `html` or `body` element.
#
dmcweeney
Here is a copy of my index.html on thimble

```background: linear-gradient(to left, #ff0000 50%, #0000ff 50%);```
#
Though you’d probably want “to bottom” for the first value and adjust the colors accordingly.
#
[jgarber]
Confirmed “to bottom” will work.
I applied the CSS `background: linear-gradient(to bottom, #ff0000 50%, #0000ff 50%);` to the `html` element on https://sixtwothree.org to test and, sure enough, 50% of the background of the overall page height was red, the other 50% was blue.
#
[jgmac1106]
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Holy_grail_(web_design), but it looks like you are trying to do a single page with top level nav
#
dmcweeney
I think so. I was looking to have 50% of the page the color pink and the other 50% of the page the color purple
#
[jgmac1106]
I see what you were trying to do but you needed to use <sections> or <divs> for your colors not more than one body. Think about an essay, Could it have two bodies of text???? Nope, nor can websites
#
So how do I do it?
#
[jgmac1106]
#
dmcweeney
I am on vacation until Saturday in Virginia Beach with family so I won't be back until Saturday
#
jgmac1106_
that is the holy grail
#
[jgmac1106]
that is a bit more complicated as I am just changing the colors of different grids rather than sections
#
[jgmac1106]
I will add my template into Thimble and you can mess around, the alternative is just start over with your site section:nth-child(odd);height: 50vh; {background: pink; height: 50vh;} section:nth-child(even) { background: purple;}
#
[jgmac1106]
Even easier is just use inline styling (slaps his own wrist) <section style="background-color: pink> and <section style="background-color: purple>, In your head (better yet on paper prototype) think about each area as a section
#
dmcweeney: Using your published page, I replaced `<body>` with `<body style="background: linear-gradient(to bottom, #ff0000 50%, #0000ff 50%);">` and it works.
#
gRegorLove
That applies to the entire height of the page. Like jgmac1106_ said, you might want to alternate different background colors on sections, instead.
#
[jgmac1106]
@drewmcsweeney it is for graduate classes but you could take my Digital Teaching and Learning Too class in the open as a participant, the outcome (final for paying folks) is basically a classwebsite like yours
#
