hello; a question about IndieAuth (the perspective of allowing users to login to my site via their website): is there anything that complements it so I can fetch people's name, avatar?
#
[shurcool]
I'm guessing I already found the answer at https://indieweb.org/h-card#Why but want to confirm
#
aaronpk
[shurcool]: yep I know a few sites are doing exactly that
#
[shurcool]
and if they're missing that, I guess I can fall back to displaying a default avatar image, and use the domain as their name, right?
#
[shurcool]
cool, thanks 🙂
#
tantek__
[shurcool]: do you think there's a better place or way we can document that use-case and how-to?
#
[shurcool]
https://indieweb.org/h-card#Why seems fine and appropriate. it'd be good to fix the broken link in the 2nd paragraph though
#
[shurcool]
only the fragment is broken
#
aaronpk
oh funny, thanks

wish I could figure out a way to POSSE to SMS using Twillio, group SMS became my families facebook replacement
#
Zegnat
I think petermolnar is SMS’ing from his own server. Maybe. Ask him in dev?

I know people have looked at the Instagram export, that could be an interesting basis for that (but afaik there were complaints about the data quality)
#
Zegnat
What is Instagram?
#
Loqi
Instagram is a popular photo and short video hosting silo most well known for square photos that have been processed with an image filter https://indieweb.org/Instagram
#
Zegnat
Hmm. Doesn’t seem to have a list of people who got everything out. Trying to remember who imported all of their Instagram history to their own sites ... cleverdevil? schmarty? eddie? They might have tips
#
[jgmac1106]
[cleverdevil] wrote one for facebook, instagrams position was you don;t own the comments on your photos the other users do so those don't come on export
#
[eddie]
Yeah, I used Micro.blog's MacOS app to import my Instagram archive. I'm pretty happy with my Instagram import but there are some issues with videos and I think multiphoto posts had some potential issues? But it does a good job of getting the majority of your photos and captions into your system
#
sknebel
[eddie]: can you add a note about that to /Instagram?

Does that speak general Micropub or only with micro.blog, dougbeal|mb1? If general, that is definitely worth documenting!
#
skippy
micro.blog (still?) doesn't offer an easy way to see replies or conversations, does it?
#
skippy
oh, I see now a "conversation" link on posts.
#
dougbeal|mb1
Zegnat: don't recall
#
[jgmac1106]
@skippy agree, yes you can hit conversations but I eel like I sidetrack things when I don't know it is a conversation
#
[jgmac1106]
I started talking about Double Dragon when somebody else was sharing Mario Bro 5 year old bday pics
#
skippy
i've been subscribed to the RSS feed for micro.blog/discover for the last couple weeks. it's been interesting; and i'm considering jumping into the platform.

Sure, will do sknebel
#
[eddie]
Zegnat: if you are talking about the Micro.blog import it works with general Micropub
#
Zegnat
[eddie], I was wondering about the desktop client that dougbeal|mb1 was mentioning. Good to know it is generic! Should probably end up on /Instagram then :)
#
[eddie]
weird I don't see his comment in slack
#
[eddie]
skippy: I really enjoy it. It's a great community and I love the IndieWeb compatibility so I'm able to engage with it when and how I want
#
skippy
thanks eddie. I'm trying to weigh how i'd use it. Native client? Add feeds to Aperture? And then do I want to cross-post from my site, or pay for the convenience of mb hosting?
#
Zegnat
Huh. dougbeal|mb1’s text didn’t make it to the logs either :o
#
Zegnat
[eddie], you do not see this? https://i.imgur.com/Jy8WyIj.png
#
aaronpk
meta, but if you're not on /chat-names then Loqi is on high-alert mode. further discussion in meta plz :)
#
[eddie]
Zegnat: nope.
#
[eddie]
gotcha so the dougbeal was Loqi protection
#
[eddie]
#
[eddie]
skippy: Definitely, the good news is it's pretty easy to adjust as you change your mind as far as how you follow. I used to read everything in the native client, but i switched to following individual people in Aperture
#
[eddie]
I did that so I can follow different people in different channels. I have 3 different channels for Micro.blog. One that contains people that I actually communicate frequently with, one that is just people I find interesting and one is for accounts that don't post often and I don't want to get lost in the weeds
#
skippy
thanks [eddie].
#
[eddie]
Definitely 🙂 I'm a Micro.blog fan. haha feel free to reach out if you run into any other questions while you look into it

zegnat jgmac1106: The micro.blog client will do xml-rpc to wordpress or upload to a hosted micro.blog (though mine is subscribed-then-expired, so your milage may vary). Unknown what protocol it would use to micro.blog.
#
skippy
sunlit, at least, supports micropub in addition to xml-rpc.

ohh I play on microblog, I am going to steal [eddie] idea, currently I only send post I tag microblog as a way to intentionally crosspost since some folks there think crossposting is bad as well
#
[schmarty]
this is a lovely collection of terrible news about big silos closing off outgoing links to smaller websites: https://whatsnewinpublishing.com/2018/10/the-powerhouses-of-the-internet-are-turning-hostile-to-websites/

I seem to remember some people did that with wordpress and indieauth.com, so they could use their Twitter OAuth to log into their wordpress. if it uses the "normal" autheitcation method for the site it doesn't really make sense though

yes there is a setting in WordPress but it caused some confusion and you need to enable the feature
