tantek__
what type of storage are people using these days for long term not-cloud photo archives?
#
tantek__
(use-cases: offloading photos from ipod/phone/laptop so they don't get full, archiving for retrieval years later etc.)
#
donpdonp
ssd in a usb enclosure. not sure how long-term that is but its nice to have the data in-house.
#
tantek__
USB sticks? external SSDs? SD cards? Some combination?
#
donpdonp
a plain ol' 2.5" SSD drive in a case, connected to a raspberry pi via usb.
#
tantek__
yeah I'm kinda thinking SSD in a USB enclosure for a "big" archive, and then one of the others for easy to store offsite partitioned-by-year (or month?) archives
#
GWG
I have a NAS
#
tantek__
donpdonp that sounds good. and then rotate it (to a new one) every 5 years or so.
#
tantek__
and use the old one as one of several timemachine rotations
#
Ruxton
I have an unRaid server wth many terabytes, backed up to backblaze
#
tantek__
anyone have experience with the longevity of USB sticks vs SD cards that are used to write once (and never delete)?
#
Ruxton
I wouldn't use either for long term storage, i've lost too many of both
#
tantek__
like do you have to read them every once in a while to "refresh" them? or do they just stay readable for years?
#
tantek__
I've only had them go bad after LOTS of repeated write / delete / overwrite etc. use
#
Ruxton
not lost like disappeared, lost like they just stopped working one day
#
tantek__
interesting
#
[jgmac1106]
agree, I trust Google more than my hard drives in many ways
#
Ruxton
where as I've put metal platter hdd's in the cupboard for over 15 years and they still work
#
tantek__
[jgmac1106]: yes cloud-storage is complementary, however this is why I specifically asked about local non-cloud storage
#
[jgmac1106]
but honestly my wife trust nothing so all important photos get printed, haven't had a printed photo fail to load onc
#
Ruxton
[jgmac1106]: i've had them fade and get damaged ;)
#
tantek__
Ruxton that is a good point. metal platter HDDs are also the oldest / most well-understood of all those technologies
#
[jgmac1106]
I know and I screw up my local non cloud storage so much, hard drives fail, lose power corrds, don't have a zip driver anymore
#
tantek__
decades ago I did have stiction problems with a few of them that were unused for long periods of time
#
GWG
I backup things in multiple places
#
[jgmac1106]
my first digital camera took 3.5 inch floppies
#
GWG
[jgmac1106]: I remember those
#
Ruxton
[jgmac1106]: the sony?
#
[jgmac1106]
I think so, or a Kodak, was expensive, and I left it on a Greyhound bus after a festival
#
[jgmac1106]
my brother worked at a place that delivered jc penny merch, it "fell" into my hands, Karma got me back
#
Ruxton
oh i had one of those :( I acquired a mini disc player for a way too good price.. I left it on a seat in a park at 3am one night a few months later.
#
aaronpk
i have a regular HDD which is the canonical/working copy, and I back that up to my local RAID server (with HDDs) and that gets backed up to backblaze
#
aaronpk
speaking of which, i need to copy the photos from NYC

!tell tantek__ long term photo archive: local home server synced to remote, offsite server, all backud up on blu-ray; I made a lot of research on the topic, apparently blu-rays are mineral material (similar to mdisc) so their longetivity looks promising. Anything electron driven (usb, sd card, ssd) will start loosing charge when left on a shelf for ~5 years. Alternatively, there's always tape drives, but then the drive itself becomes a

Thanks! I want to change the design a bit, but I quite like it too :)

I think it has a nice clean design, no hard edges, good line wieghts

but Gregor[m] that's a big anchor I hear a lot when I ask about about moving off facebook

That's because it's based on a template someone else made 😋

the only thing that's marginally close is http://gettogether.community/
#
jacky
I'm working on a patch to their auth options to allow IndieAuth sign in
#
jacky
and then work to add more microformats for event pages (example: https://gettogether.community/events/249/dweb-sf-meet-up-not-hosted-by-bamf/)
#
Gregor[m]
thanks jacky!
#
jacky
ooh so a shared calendar
#
jacky
definitely
#
Gregor[m]
I dunno
#
jacky
the endpoint looks like it'll emit quite a bit of information! https://developers.facebook.com/docs/graph-api/reference/event/
#
jacky
Gregor[m]: got me curious about this
#
jacky
I don't know/think bridgy would be able to backfeed info like this
#
jacky
possibly RSVPs yeah
#
jacky
but a unified indieweb + facebook (and maybe even eventbrite + meetup) interface is interesting
#
Gregor[m]
Matrix.org for events it is then!
#
Gregor[m]
Uh interesting, haven't read about bridgy before
#
[jgmac1106]
We stay away from eventbrite due to ToS that gives them rights to all event media for perpituity
#
[jgmac1106]
Known has a decent event making interface you could probably copy
#
[jgmac1106]
We do post all InieWeb events on facebook, well someone with a facebook account does

Make sure the 2FA app you use lets you make backups. I made that mistake once...

And this is why I use Authy. It syncs between devices.

anyone have a link to Demitri's demo where he basically owned his repos?

#
[jgmac1106]
it is pretty amazing, having friends trying to do somethign similar but using gdocs, dropbox, etc for file storage, wanted to share UI
#
petermolnar
keepassxc can store 2fa
#
petermolnar
besides being a password storage
#
petermolnar
although I know it goes against 2fa itself
#
Zegnat
I specifically haven’t stored 2FA in 1Password because I want it to be a second factor
#
Zegnat
What is 2FA?
#
Loqi
multi-factor authentication (commonly two-factor authentication, abbreviated 2FA or TFA) is an authentication process that requires at least a second component to a standard authentication method https://indieweb.org/2FA
#
Zegnat
Wonder if we should list some apps
#
Zegnat
2FA << [https://github.com/andOTP/andOTP andOTP] is an open-source TOTP and HOTP application for [[Android]] that allows for encrypted backups of your key data.
#
Loqi
ok, I added "[https://github.com/andOTP/andOTP andOTP] is an open-source TOTP and HOTP application for [[Android]] that allows for encrypted backups of your key data." to the "See Also" section of /multi-factor_authentication https://indieweb.org/wiki/index.php?diff=52453&oldid=51282

what is .bs
#
Loqi
It looks like we don't have a page for ".bs" yet. Would you like to create it? (Or just say ".bs is ____", a sentence describing the term)
#
tantek__
what are short domains
#
Loqi
short domains are commonly used on the IndieWeb for personal URL shortening, or clever domain hacks https://indieweb.org/short-domains
