hi jacky, how's coding?

[jgmac1106]
yeah doing all that now
#
jacky
time to catch up on https://myurlis.com/

#
jacky
been looking/reading more AP stuff
#
jacky
I kinda see why people don't like JSON-LD but also ActivityStreams is pretty cool
#
jacky
def need more client libs for this kind of stuff
#
jacky
would enable more people to build things
#
[kevinmarks]
Activity Streams did have a lot of distillation from multiple social networks, but we dropped the ball on keeping that documented well
#
[kevinmarks]
AS2 drifted a bit further from that into well-meaning abstraction
#
jacky
looking at it tho; it'd make more sense for it to be something that MicroPub aligns with
#
jacky
might be just reading into it too deeply or too loosely lol
#
[kevinmarks]
granary is good at doing that empirically
#
KartikPrabhu
what is ActivityPub?
#
Loqi
ActivityPub is a decentralized social networking protocol (W3C Recommendation) briefly known as ActivityPump, based on pump.io and ActivityStreams https://indieweb.org/ActivityPub
#
[kevinmarks]
snarfed has done the due diligence on mapping there
#
jacky
didn't want to have a SPOA on snarfed tho lol
#
[jgmac1106]
kevinmarks++ thanks for the tip on hotlinking...was trying to figure out what I was doing wrong
#
Loqi
kevinmarks has 14 karma in this channel over the last year (31 in all channels)
#
[kevinmarks]
a lot of the original Activity Streams work was driven by people actively working on interop, like Gnip - granary still does that

isn't that the whole point of 410?

@gwg if in doing so you fixed the feed for anyone else using your theme, then yes
#
GWG
Technically
#
[eddie]
Yeah, if it fixed it for anyone using your theme and it is freely available to them (meaning the code has been pushed up to its distribution point) then I agree
#
GWG
Fixed is relative. Anyone doing what I'm doing, yes

[Greg McVerry] Following People or Feeds in the #IndieWeb #mb #DoOO #edtechchat #literacies
#
jgmac1106
-understood I was being kind of snarky with “: yes you can have my stuff, but you can’t be on my server, run your own” which is basically how a website works…interesting to watch the same discoverability debate happen on Mastodon as new communities leave platforms
#
jgmac1106
twitter users want it to be Twitter, G+ users, G+ and now Tumblr users…and then you build up a following and friends….and the idea of redoing all that work somewhere else just sounds so unappealling
#
[tonz]
discoverability, yes, it’s a bit odd. I’ve always approached it as triangulation, not as searching or getting suggestion. When I come across someone I check who they’re following, and who’s following them. And from that transverse the social graph. Much like I did perusing blogrolls in the early ’00s. The only exception is during events, when I’ll try to find others at the event (through # on twitter e.g.), and take it from there.
#
[tonz]
So my current Mastodon list is a completely diff set of people from my twitter follower list.
#
[tonz]
As it started with different people, from which I transversed their follower lists
#
jgmac1106
reminds me I have more screen shots of how user discoverability works on Tumblr,…it is a good model….except for the duplication of reblogged posts in my feed in tight communities
#
jgmac1106
[tonz] my mastodon followers are turning out to be the same Twitter crowd.,,..twice the work for the same audience…trying to change it up and do different content, poetry and art and weird weeby stuff there
#
jgmac1106
but just going and finding all the why rss and feeds suck from 2004-2006 as we build social readers and I have already failed at building my feeds…have people I want to follow, forget to add, etc…need to follow people not feeds but follow people and NOT all their feeds

good morning
#
doubleloop
I think I prefer discoverability by topic, rather than by people
#
doubleloop
And the former also leads to the latter
#
doubleloop
It would be great if Mastodon implemented groups
#
jgmac1106
@doubleloop I am going to add three topics to my h-hard…keep meaning to, but its finals week

Information overload is a UI problem - not a problem with the number of feeds, firehouse feeds, or amount of information. People post too often? Group feed by author. Spend too much time organizing your channels? Use one channel and search by tag or group by tag.
#
indiewindy
Also strongly disagree with Greg's suggestion of people having multiple feeds. It's a mess when everyone has different feeds on their website, instead of one canocical firehouse that can be sorted later.
#
aaronpk
subscribe to my firehose and come back and we can talk about it again ;-)
#
[jgmac1106]
if you subscribed to [aaronpk] @chrisadrich and my firehose you would be getting well over 100 posts a day....nobody wants that...but nobody wants to work...I think by saying these are my suggested feeds I am helping to reduce friction some
#
indiewindy
So, I filter my single feed by notes, checkins, articles, photos, videos, and audio. Further, I group by author. So in my feed, when you post a stream of checkins, it shows your name, photo, and then a list of a bunch of checkins in one group. Further, if I filter by "notes" most of your checkins are excluded because they lack content.
#
indiewindy
It's a UI problem
#
indiewindy
Reading youre firehose isn't really an issue for how my feed is setup
swentel joined the channel
#
indiewindy
My bigger issue is a bunch of authors I follow don't have a way of identifying a canonical feed of all their updates.
#
[jgmac1106]
for my family though I want one feed of just our photos..so many of my photos are screenshots, technical slides, etc, I do add a tag....my family would never say i want to follow Greg but let me sort through his post types, select only photos, then select only phots with X tag
#
[jgmac1106]
but if I say want a feed of family photos "Click Here" they may...if I get them off Instagram
wolftune joined the channel
#
indiewindy
yeah I get that. I guess my point is just with the canonical feed stuff. Right now it's impossible to automatically follow many mf2 authors because they link to mroe than feed.
#
[jgmac1106]
I mean when I am teaching you want every single reply post I make to close to ninety students?
#
indiewindy
Well in my feed it's grouped. So if you made 90 replies I don't see a list of 90 posts...
#
[jgmac1106]
yeah...thus the quandry...how do we reduce the friction, allow for customization, but not recreate the mistakes RSS and feed following made]
#
indiewindy
I see 1 post.
#
[jgmac1106]
Using inoreader myself...for some weire reason I see two of every post.....excited to try new reader next semester
#
aaronpk
indiewindy: do you have screenshots of that you can share? also what software is this? is it documented on the wiki yet?
#
aaronpk
would be worth adding examples to https://indieweb.org/reader if this is something you're actively using
#
indiewindy
aaronpk: I'm hoping to put it online next week, and I'll add it to the wiki of course. It's a combined microsub/micropub webapp that works offline.
#
indiewindy
also has publishing features... kind of like micro.blog but explicitly using mf2/microsub/micropub/webmentions.
#
aaronpk
sounds great, can't wait to see it
