# [chrisaldrich] I'm not sure who did it first, but I'm seeing a proliferation of /collection posts on micro.blog like this one: http://johnjohnston.info/blog/week-in-micro-blog-08-12-18/
# [chrisaldrich] They seem to be aggregations of links posts, photos, that people have appreciated on micro.blog over their past few days, weeks.
# [chrisaldrich] The compactness of these posts fits mb well, but the UI could be nicer or even more pinterest-like

# [jgmac1106] They released a collection plugin

# [chrisaldrich] what is a collection?
# Loqi A collection is a type of post that explicitly lists and/or embeds multiple other posts chosen by the author https://indieweb.org/collection
# [jgmac1106] As FYI for folks who host pages on GitHub.. Looks like adblocker has a default policy https://github.com/mozilla/thimble.mozilla.org/issues/2696#issuecomment-446016056

# [chrisaldrich] [johnjohnston] Did you use a plugin or other tool to create your m.b. collection? ^^
iasai joined the channel
# [johnjohnston] [chrisaldrich] not really. I favourite during the week and then open in tabs. Get a markdown list of links with titles or 📷 via AppleScript. Massage by hand.
# [chrisaldrich] Thanks [johnjohnston] I've seen that sort of collection post on mb before, and suspected they were done by hand, but also half suspected someone had created a mini-tool to help do it by now.
# [chrisaldrich] Do you recall who may have done it first?
# [johnjohnston] Might have been smokey? He would probably know. Think it took off about a month ago.
# [johnjohnston] [chrisaldrich] this seems first https://micro.blog/smokey/976204

# [cleverdevil] What is microgram?
# Loqi It looks like we don't have a page for "microgram" yet. Would you like to create it? (Or just say "microgram is ____", a sentence describing the term)
# [cleverdevil] Microgram is an extension to micro.blog to show photos in an instagram like photos page https://github.com/cleverdevil/microgram
# tantek cleverdevil, one millionth of a gram :P https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Microgram

# [jgmac1106] [petermolnar_] went away from WordPress channel, but pretty much across the board it seems if any female student in my class used the words mental health, anxiety, depression, diet, or exercise they got a body shaming ad.
# petermolnar do you have an example of those ads? (this is a neutral question. I'd like to see in order to stay neutral in the topic)
# [jgmac1106] yes taking screenshots now
# [jgmac1106] the key word correlation is striking
# petermolnar to be honest, this is one of those things where the underlying technology is completely neutral; you pick words for which you uploads ads. You are right, that ads for sensitive keywords should probably need to be human monitored, but this is mainly on the advertiser, not the tech.
snarfed joined the channel
# [jgmac1106] underlying technology is completely neutral---no such thing
# [jgmac1106] algorithms have baked in bias...in this case one that is harmful
# petermolnar there is no proof there's any sort of algo there
# petermolnar duckduckgo, for example, does what I wrote: you pick words for your ads
# [jgmac1106] no proof ad networks choose ads by algorithims???
# petermolnar you're misunderstanding me.
# [jgmac1106] It is coincidence that fat shaming ads appear on the blog of female students and not male? Coincidence that fat shaming adds show up on excercise, diet, and and mental health posts?
# petermolnar hear me out
# [jgmac1106] sorry jusyt infuriated right now will leisten
# [jgmac1106] this is such a human easily solvable problem. keyword: eating disorder {fat shaming ad: false;)

# petermolnar there are different types of ad networks, however, most of them are not as automated as many believe, even google has a system, where you specify target audience, and this is done by people. Classifying the target audience is most probably automated in Google's case, but not in DuckDuckGo's case: they have blog posts out there that advertisers buy target phrases, words, sentences, and they are shown according to that...
# petermolnar [still writing]
# petermolnar now, WordPress.com doesn't have - or at least I'm unaware of - posts about their ads system, but even if the do classify the content algorithmically, it's people who target the audience.
# petermolnar I need to request access, is that on purpose?
# [jgmac1106] why is that better? Then word press is making money off predatory ads they know people are explictly targeting vunerable populations
# [jgmac1106] no sorry my mistake...lemme dowbnload..nimbus was failing download...too big
# petermolnar it's not better, but you're blaming algorithms, where you should be blaming advertisers and people
# [jgmac1106] I blame people for the algorithms they write
# petermolnar ...
# petermolnar this is a basic issue with "modern" ads; in many cases, it's served by a 3rd party ad system, and the don't care
# petermolnar anyway, we're talking about abstracts of the problem, are there any proposals, ideas, ways, to fix it? Can it be reported somehow? Do the blog owners have any control over it?
# [jgmac1106] It has been reported. I am not going to broadcast the screenshots. Until I check with my students, and even then I may not...they don't need extra attention
# petermolnar are those blogs completely public?
# [jgmac1106] Any add about mental health, anxiety, diet, exercise, targeted only to female students in class
# [jgmac1106] yes, but there is a difference between open and public and broadcasting, especially when mental health issues are involved
# [jgmac1106] I am going to ask and with permission I will write about it....this is my standard practice for a screenshot of anyone's public space
# petermolnar I just wanted to see the ads, not the blogs themselves, to be honest
# petermolnar I believe you about the targeting
# [jgmac1106] This one truly angers me.
# [jgmac1106] here is the feed: http://edu106class.networkedlearningcollaborative.com/feeds.html
# petermolnar ok, as I thought, ads are 3rd party network
# petermolnar their JS is not even included when JS is not allowed
# [jgmac1106] Still Automatic's profits. They are the one's at fault
# Zegnat If there are issues with ads on freely hosted WP, maybe add to /Wordpress as criticism? Good to know when we are recommending WP.com as a viable platform to setup a site
# petermolnar no. whoever _posts_ those ads are the ones at fault.
# [jgmac1106] We will have to call that a philosophical disagreement, if I profit from crappy third party ads I am responsible for that content
# [jgmac1106] I will @zegnat, asking permission first, while not required I ask other's to respect the same
# petermolnar wait, you're not really blaming the advertisers themselves, only those, whoever displays them? o.O
# [jgmac1106] I am blaming the company the company the end users make the agreement with, I am blaming the company that allows third party ads like this on their site...okay sounds good now....I have to head to work...sorry [aaronpk] didn't get to FAQ this morning
