# [cleverdevil] Good morning, IndieWeb!
# cweiske I began reindexing the whole indieweb chat archive on my new server, so that https://indiechat.search.cweiske.de/ will be fully back up tomorrow.
# jeremycherfas Cweiske++
# [cleverdevil] Now that I have a really great solution for tracking my TV/Movie watch history in an automated fashion, I want to have the same thing for my podcast consumption...
# cjwillcock cweiske++ most helpful, thank you
# [schmarty] [cleverdevil] i very much also want automated podcast listen tracking
# [cleverdevil] So, I use Overcast for my podcast client, and it does have an OPML export that *may* have the information I need in it.
# [cleverdevil] I could periodically download this file (automatically), parse it, and publish events to my site.
# [cleverdevil] But, I am in the Overcast Slack and and pinging Marco Arment about it as well.
# [schmarty] ooh i also use overcast, so go go go 😉
# [cleverdevil] Perhaps he'd be open to adding a feed that I can parse without hacks.
# [cleverdevil] Or a webhook.
# [schmarty] when i was still on android there were a couple of podcatchers that used the last.fm API and could be pointed at custom servers. my phone died before i got around to setting that up, though.
nitot joined the channel
# [cleverdevil] OK, I have a script that can reliably read the Overcast extended OPML export, and identify recently watched episodes, including a timestamp of when they were played.
# [cleverdevil] s/watched/listened.
# [cleverdevil] Biggest blockers: 1. this export file is hidden behind an authenticated portal at overcast.fm 2. podcast art isn't available in the OPML file.
wolftune, friedcell, snarfed, KartikPrabhu, jackjamieson and micahsilverman joined the channel
# jeremycherfas [Cleverdevil] Is there no way to use Overcast's share sheet?
# [cleverdevil] That wouldn't be automatic.
# [cleverdevil] I want it to just track what I listen to automatically and publish it to my site, just like I do with my Trakt.TV history.
# jeremycherfas Not entirely, no ...
# jeremycherfas Fair enough
# [cleverdevil] That wouldn't be automatic.

# [cleverdevil] I have a script now that can basically do the hard part.
# [cleverdevil] It logs into overcast.fm (or restores a saved session from disk if available), parses the OPML, and identifies recently watched episodes.
# [cleverdevil] I figured out how to fetch artwork, too, but I haven't written it into the script yet.
# [cleverdevil] I definitely want to be careful not to piss off Marco!

# [cleverdevil] The overcast stuff is super in progress 🙂
# [cleverdevil] (there is a tiny conf file you have to make to use that script, and its pretty bespoke for me right now, but the bones are there)
# [cleverdevil] Basically, its just reading an Atom feed from Trakt Pro.
# [cleverdevil] No magic 😉
# [cleverdevil] I stopped using Day One a while ago. Built a little script that published all my historical content as private entries to my website.
# [cleverdevil] Now I use Drafts with an action to Micropub journal entries to my website with private visibility.

# [smerrill] writefreely looks neat.
# chrisaldrich I like the idea behind writefreely and the fact that they're monetizing pieces for long term sustainability, but I worry about "free" open instances that die or aren't maintained and essentially act as mini silos.

# chrisaldrich Yes, telegra.ph looks more like the "old" write.as. The newer incarnation of write.as seems to have moved *way* more to the fediverse side of things since November based on their blog.
# chrisaldrich The fact that write.as is now open source and self-hostable is quite interesting though.
# chrisaldrich It could be used to replace things like Facebook groups and other smaller community related pieces.
# chrisaldrich I'm curious if educators like @jgmac1106 would consider using /writefreely as classroom-based blogging communities?
# chrisaldrich It looks like it's added enough functionality (and with community replies coming) that it could be used for something like that.
# chrisaldrich Though I can't tell if it's got some of the privacy related pieces that some might be looking for.
# chrisaldrich voss, where does one read telegra.ph spam though? Do they have a readable feed?
# [voss] And there's a bunch of pages like this: https://telegra.ph/Looking-for-someone-to-write-my-essay-11-26
# chrisaldrich I see what you mean. I have an education related WithKnown instance that is continually spammed by those two key words. It really kills me.
# chrisaldrich I suppose they've got to write something when they're not writing essays? ;)
# chrisaldrich I know that WithKnown focused heavily on the edu market and suspect that's how they drew these essay blogger spam. I'm curious if others with non-edu related sites have seen it as much?
# chrisaldrich Voss are you using the Akismet plugin? https://github.com/mapkyca/KnownAkismet
# chrisaldrich And does your site touch on any education related pieces?
# [voss] chrisaldrich My site it just my personal site, with no educational aspect, except maybe for my future self (: I was using the Akismet plugin, but realised it also blocked some webmentions from showing up. Instead, as of today, I disabled the public comments functionality in Known. Hopefully that will stop the deluge of essay writer spam.
# chrisaldrich I may have to do the same thing with one of my sites or just mothball it since it is more of a sandbox....
# chrisaldrich If you think of it, directions for disabling public comments would be a nice thing to have for the Known wiki page....
# chrisaldrich If I recall I think @jgmac1106 did it by hiding the section in CSS, but I never heard if it worked.
# chrisaldrich alright... out to a meeting.

# [cleverdevil] FYI, [Rose], I updated that Overcast gist with code that can now identify episode artwork as well.
# [cleverdevil] One note: Marco rate limits the OPML export, so you have to run it infrequently.
# [cleverdevil] Not sure what rules he uses, he hasn't replied to me yet in Overcast Slack.
# [cleverdevil] (I'd love to convince him to make an optional Atom/RSS/JSON feed for me to consume instead of this dirty hack!)

# kisik21 [eddie]: here's some feedback about your blog's design - it's hard to separate notes with dates being so bleak they almost blend with the background and no visible separators. Could you add some visual aid to help separate several notes on your homepage?
# kisik21 that would be really cool
[jgmac1106] joined the channel
# kisik21 I drew inspiration for my design partially from twitter - at least with the webaction buttons. The separation between notes is also stemming from there.
# kisik21 it was logical to make a stream of blocks like twitter does
