[cleverdevil] Ahhh so once every 30 minutes might be safer until Marco provides clarification.
#
[cleverdevil]
I was thinking more like every 8 hours for the time being.
#
[cleverdevil]
For now, I am going to run it manually until I hear from him.
#
[cleverdevil]
(If I hear from him?)
#
[eddie]
Ahhh that makes sense

What is OPML

OPML stands for Outline Processor Markup Language, an XML-based format and defacto standard used for feed lists interchange https://indieweb.org/OPML

What’s the difference between an essay and a blog post? [voss] [chrisaldrich] [jgmac1106]

#
chrisaldrich
tantek, we were discussing essay writers outside of the IndieWeb sphere. They're people that students might hire to write college assignments instead of doing themselves.
#
chrisaldrich
Typically this is considered cheating, but students are willing to pay hundreds for someone to do their term papers instead of writing them themselves.
#
chrisaldrich
They also are apparently very ardent comment spammers as a means of getting attention for their services.
#
chrisaldrich
The general context is that these essay writers have figured out how to target the comments sections of WithKnown sites (possibly because the company was education focused) as a means of flogging their wares.

[tantek]
I guess I'm curious about the actual format
#
[tantek]
As in what makes something an essay an essay?
#
chrisaldrich
I'd say that most blog posts would be considered essays though very few call them that.
#
chrisaldrich
Montaigne is considered one of the best essayists... https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Essays_(Montaigne) could be a good place to start.
#
chrisaldrich
I suppose it's rare for serious essayists to post their work online instead of in physical print.

would be interesting to come up with a taxonomy of "articles" like an essay vs. news article etc.

I am curious how people handle posting upcoming events they will be attending on their site. I am thinking this should be a sub folder (category), and that just showing the upcoming events on a page is probably for the best?

Some stylistic differences between blogging and essays. Whats difference between a blog and journalism article? And folks notice WordPress removed the word blog from their documentation? It's for publishing not blogging now
#
Zegnat
What is the difference between a blog post and an op-ed? People who write the first are bloggers, people who write the second are “newspaper writers”? :P
#
Loqi
It looks like we don't have a page for "difference between a blog post and an op-ed" yet. Would you like to create it? (Or just say "difference between a blog post and an op-ed is ____", a sentence describing the term)
#
Zegnat
doesn’t actually want to get into that discussion, just a random thought
#
[jgmac1106]
@zegnat and the context collapse works the wother way for me, I have to beak my students of treating a blog post like a facebook or instagram update with no line breaks and one short paragraph....yet they also have to hand in a digital essay assignment...which is usually a post or a page. Its the same answer as the tootsie roll pop after three citations its now an essay
#

well off to write for the day...didn;t hit my four hours on book yeserday have to make up 1.5 hours today

Zegnat Op-eds are a strange mixture. In some papers they are mostly written by a small roster of regular columnists. In others, they are more often by outside people with a point of view. Hard to generalise. I would say that some long-form blog posts might be as well structured as a good essay, but the vast majority are not.

grantcodes postrchild looks great, but I can't login to the micropub endpoint using Known. http://voss.co/files/postrchild-error.png
#
[voss]
I suspect this is down to an issue with Known, however, as I can't connect Omnibear for example. Also gives me an error about getting an access token.
#
[voss]
I should file an issue on Known for this.
#
Loqi
yea!

But, as mentioned, I think Knowns auth endpoint is the issue here. I get the same error with Omnibear, and I also can't connect to alltogethernow.io with indieauth.

Good morning Indieweb
#
[voss]
Oh, I think I found the issue!
#
sknebel
that's a very helpful error message :D
#
bradenslen
I've been having a conversation with Francois Planque the maintainer of B2evolution CMS platform about B2 adding webmention support
#
[voss]
[grantcodes] my Known site was not setup to be Single user site. That would explain why some auth things won't work, because it's not a single-person identity, but could be used by multiple people.
#
[voss]
I just enabled the "Single user" flag, and postrchild works 🙂
#
[voss]
And so does alltogethernow.io.
#
[voss]
Move along, nothing to see here.
#
bradenslen
I'm hoping he will stop in here for any technical questions.
#
bradenslen
I've hit the limits of what little I know or can explain. Our discussion here down in the comments: https://ramblinggit.com/2019/01/webmentions-on-b2evolutions-todo-list/
#
bradenslen
The good thing is another platform is actively looking into Indieweb support. FYI.

[voss] together and postrchild both use the same library for auth so there may very well be an issue with it
#
[voss]
[grantcodes] no issues, all is working, see my message from 11:51pm GMT 🙂
#
[voss]
correction 1.51pm GMT
#
[voss]
I was an idiot. Didn't set my site to "single user".
#
[voss]
Now postrchild and together both works. Also Omnibear.

I've been a little disillusioned about Indiepaper because its been such a pain to get the iOS app approved 😛
#
[cleverdevil]
Poor [eddie] has volunteered to help and Apple is putting him through the ringer.
#
[Rose]
Oh dear.
#
[Rose]
What will the iOS app do? Be a service just like the Mac app? Or also connect to a reader?
#
[Rose]
(Also: I'm very glad I made a mess of Git on my fork rather than yours Git early in the morning can be hard!)
#
[Rose]
Missing a full stop there
#
[cleverdevil]
It will handle the IndieAuth dance and then have a native share sheet.
#
[cleverdevil]
So you don't have to go through Shortcuts.

#
[schmarty]
i really like the shortcut!
#
[schmarty]
(once i got it set up. an app would make that much easier!)
#
[eddie]
Yeah the shortcut was great. The iOS app is nice in that it's easy to do the IndieAuth flow and requires less taps when saving a post
#
[eddie]
But.... apple 😡
#
[eddie]
The good news is, at the end of it, we'll have an IndieAuth Swift Library! so it'll be easier for things like MarsEdit to support IndieAuth
