also now you can have your Android phone *be* your security key, which gives you the phishing protection on mobile without the new physical thing
#
snarfed

no problem nellkate still trying to discover the pattern of searching for the rooms, sometimes I could get them to show other times I could not

Thank you very much for the work you're putting in. I'm still trying to figure out Matrix and IM in general but am happy to try things out. 🙂

what is peertube?

It looks like we don't have a page for "peertube" yet. Would you like to create it? (Or just say "peertube is ____", a sentence describing the term)

does anyone use PeerTube? Have an instance they recommend?

I only occasionally watch stuff on instances, don't use it to post myself

!tell tantek Catching up on the 2FA conversation and it reminded me that Google’s Pixelbooks have a built-in U2F security key: https://9to5google.com/2018/06/08/pixelbook-power-button-u2f-security-key/
#
Loqi
Ok, I'll tell them that when I see them next

That's great

Google’s Advanced Protection Program is actually pretty good for those its intended for: “journalists, activists, business leaders, and political campaign teams.”
#
[jgarber]
For the average Google user, strong password plus TOTP or security key (e.g. Yubikey) is sufficient. All depends on your threat profile.

All started because I couldn't really wrap my head around where to put <scripts> in head, before footer, some other place etc etc. So I thought I may as well make the necessary effort.
#
petermolnar
wow, that is a nice learning page
#

thx sknebel owning your video and all sounds great….till you look at the files sizes…..don’t want to use archive.org or YouTube as it is my kid and I don’t want to choose his license let him choose when older
#
sknebel
not convinced that's actually that much of a problem nowadays, at least at small scale
#
jgmac1106
it is when you are two gigd away from the next tier of pricing
#
jgmac1106
ohh you mean the license stuff….guess I could do private on YouTube
#
sknebel
no, the traffic
[eddie] joined the channel
#
jgmac1106
yeah bandwidth I am not worried about..it is the storage and the process of uploading
#
jgmac1106
500-700 kb/s to s3…..4 gigs gonna take forever…..
#
aaronpk
what kind of videos? 4 gigs is a really long video...
#
jgmac1106
just 9 minutes of my son talking stuffed animals…he probably went full screen on my iMac..didn’t think about stepping on it..did seem quite large
#
jgmac1106
he filmed himself in Quicktime
#
sknebel
lol yeah
#
aaronpk
yes that can definitely be compressed
#
sknebel
10 mins 720p is <100MB on e.g. YT
#
jgmac1106
yeah, time to compress
#
jgmac1106
didn’t even think about it thx all
#
jgmac1106
….and then he rememebers Creative Cloud changed policies with University and now I can get the suite at the great price of “29.95” a month…..grrrrr stupid hard drive crash…off to work laptop
#
Zegnat
And this is why I like YouTube, it handles all the reencodings, haha. When using Archive.org for hosting IWC videos you don’t get that, for instance, so you will always have to put up the bandwidth costs.
#
Zegnat
Although it looks like the Zoom videos aren’t too bad
#
jgmac1106
okay 513 mb now

preferaly you put in a few more arguments to that command so you get a nice browser-compatible encoding and all that jazz

jacky
do we have to have a page for _anything_ we come across?
#
jacky
like some stuff like peertube, pixelfed, etc could fit on /ActivityPub
#
jacky
versus having super small pages
#
jacky
is also not 100% familiar with wiki etiquette and if smaller pages are better than disregard my comments
[manton] joined the channel
#
Zegnat
I believe we have previously said that new pages are fine if they are indieweb related, or if people are using it?
#
Zegnat
Maybe also good to create pages if we see people ask the “What is?” question in chat.
#
jeremycherfas
Maybe it would be a good idea if loqi could go to sections on pages
#
jeremycherfas
Or maybe he can already.

one related project that I'm really interested to dive into \ hear experiences of is scuttlebot

#
[jgmac1106]
What is scuttlebut?

infominer[m]: eh, screw a search engine
#
infominer[m]
ahha, well, I do get frustrated if I forget to check my website first
#
infominer[m]
:P
#
[jgmac1106]
social search IMO more important now, rarely start at search engines now when I want to learn
#
infominer[m]
I'm quite drawn to and inspired by the awesome lists
#
infominer[m]
IMO, the entire content marketing industry has missed the boat.. and so I'm just taking the opportunity while I can... there is so much value to add everywhere I look..
#
infominer[m]
haven't caught up w google's search algo yet. long form educational content is where its at... but lists of resources are even longerlasting and add value to a wider audience

first the internal.. links and foundational components...

next: automated archiving, link reports and swapping
electronicmaji joined the channel
#
infominer[m]
but what really needs is a bot on github to do that too.. check all the awesome(and informational) repos for broken links, archive, check for archived copies, submit pull-requests
#
[tantek]
jacky, you can do both. Add stuff like peertube, pixelfed, etc on /ActivityPub in their own subsections, then add page name redirects to those sections
