In celebration of 1.44 million I scroll through my kids website and find this chain of webmentions on a conversation I never knew they had http://dogzone.jgregorymcverry.com/2019/hello-dan

do we have a topic on backfilling memento sites? (read: recovering old looks/versions of our websites)
#
petermolnar
do we at least have terminology on memento versions?
#
aaronpk
what is memento?
#
Loqi
It looks like we don't have a page for "memento" yet. Would you like to create it?_Q (Or just say "memento is ____", a sentence describing the term)

I adapted spideprpig to use internet archive if the linked pages return errors
#
[kevinmarks786]
though I use mention.tech to do that so it is extra dependencies
#
[kevinmarks786]
(going direct would make more sense; I was being lazy as I'd already written the api calls at mention.tech)

I haven't tried that if the root of the site 404s though

aaronpk look two lines above :) "memento" is the term I've been using for archived old versions of a certain page for your site, preferably a version of how it was originally published; I'm open for suggestions for better terminology
#
petermolnar
the point would be to have time capsule versions of your entries along with the "current" version
#
petermolnar
because I loved the idea of "the keep no consistent look", just write HTML, but that is not a viable option for ever changing data structures - even though mf2 has been around for a long while, fine tunes are commonly still needed
#
petermolnar
I pulled down versions for my entries from archive.org that had hits close enough to their publication dates into the same folders where the markdown files live and for the future, I'll keep a copy of the original render of each entry
#
petermolnar
hence memento, but time capsule could work as well
#
petermolnar
still a single stack, these are standalone html files

#
aaronpk
is that different from archiving? that's the word I would use to describe it
#
petermolnar
for me, archive doesn't necessarily mean the original published version; an archival copy could be made of any existing version
#
petermolnar
that said, it's still a good term for it
#
petermolnar
similar, but not the same; I don't wish to have a capture of the while site, but a capture of each entry at their original publication time
#
aaronpk
hm interesting
#
petermolnar
(btw it's fascinating to see 2012, 2015, etc versions of indieweb sites and to realize how the same aesthetics influenced a lot of us)
#
petermolnar
*s/while/whole
#
petermolnar
eg: https://petermolnar.net/minimalism-is-not-asceticism/index.html -> link on the top "current version | how it originally looked in 2014" -> the second brings you to a version of the 2014 look of that specific entry
#
petermolnar
the trouble there is that most of the ones I pulled from archive.org pull css & other resources from archive.org, but it's not that bad
#
aaronpk
ah neat
