[tantek]that's a decent summary [snarfed]. I see indieweb.social as a good place for folks to try experimenting with UI etc. I wouldn't want to encourage actually keeping any data there. Yet it's no more harmful than informal chats here in IRC/Slack right?
mardy[tantek]: if the reason why you wouldn't encourage keeping data in it is that the instance might go away, then I happened to have exactly this problem with Mastodon, this summer
[tantek]yes I think that's partly why snarfed was referring to any particular mastodon instance as another silo, that same vulnerability of not owning your identity or data is there
[jgmac1106]joined to support tim and let him play, I don't Mastodon much, need to figure out my federation strategy, currently I can go Known>micro.blog>mastodon but you lose so much context w/o webmentions
[snarfed][tantek] yeah we do have a very imperfect fuzzy distinction between note posts and reply chains, eg twitter and mastodon style, and actual "chat," eg IRC etc here
[snarfed]we've obviously made much more progress on owning notes + reply chains than true chat. mastodon still clearly seems like the former more than the latter, though, hence my pushing on it harder
