#jhsheridanIs there any known/planned resolution to the Instagram API issues with OwnYourGram and Bridgy? Or should I just give up on Instagram for now? Are there other solutions?
#aaronpkjhsheridan: bridgy seems to be doing better with instagram than I am
#aaronpkI did just write up instructions for self hosting ownyourgram which in theory should work better since you won't be sharing the rate limits with everyone else

#[Rose]October this year will be filled with writing my book that's due at the start of November, Sadly little time for hacking, except as relaxation after writing
#jgmac1106well put the book on GitHub and keep sending yoruself PRs….hacking as authoring
#[JHSheridan][jgmac1106] moving this here b/c I don't want to clutter up the dev room. I agree w/ you that silos vs solely using your own site is a personal choice. And I think the critical mass thing is really where the problem is. Building my indieweb site has really forced me to think hard about how I want to interact with the silos
#[JHSheridan]b/c it's no longer just "hmm... my indieweb site could work this way or that way" it's "I'm gonna have to write the code to make them interact with this silo or that silo" lol
#jgmac1106yes, you have to decide between the investment of time, the need to connect, and the politics of the silos

#jgmac1106I liked manton idea of open gardens versus walled gardens all the fqcebook silos are getting more and more restrictive with APIs cutting off both read and write access and not playing nice with the open web
#jgmac1106you can choose places like micro.blog that reduce the amount of work you have to do to share photos beacuse they have committment to open protocols
#[JHSheridan]I think maybe I'll leave instagram behind. While the work with ownyourgram and bridgy is amazing, I can't imagine things ever get LESS restricted. Only more.
#[JHSheridan]maybe just make twitter the only completely closed silo I interact with. And have some interaction with mastodan too despite the microformats debacle.
#[jgmac1106]tim chambers has a fork of mastodon at indieweb.social welcome to hack away on that, the mf2 support in mastodon isn't toobad at all, more philosophical differences on privacy and security of webmentions
#[snarfed]re mastodon, i love tim's enthusiasm, but https://indieweb.social/ really seems like the wrong idea. the whole point of indieweb is to own your data _on your own domain_ to interact with people on the web. so i'm not sure why he/we'd encourage people to use a silo instead, even an open silo like mastodon
#[snarfed]syndicating from your site to mastodon (or backward) seems fine, just like another silo. federating seems even better, and we have great examples of that: p3k, pfefferle's wordpress plugin, bridgy fed, etc. more discussion and stats on those in #indieweb-wordpress recently
#[snarfed]anyway. sorry to rain on indieweb.social's parade. i really do appreciate the energy and effort, just seems like the wrong direction
#aaronpki tried to say the same earlier, just maybe not as explicitly
#Loqiaaronpk: [Rose] left you a message 7 hours, 41 minutes ago: There's a typo in the SQL schema creation, I just created a pull request to fix that. For some reason it failed the travis check? https://github.com/aaronpk/OwnYourGram/pull/86
#Loqi[aaronpk] [timothy_chambers] Mastodon isn't really a forum, so even though some people create instances for specific communities, it's more about creating that instance for the governance of the specific community than to have a place to talk. I know myself an...
