I'm reflecting on photo posting behaviors and UX again
#
[tantek]
what is why post
#
Loqi
A post is either a piece of content or the act of publishing that content (usually in a way that is shared) https://indieweb.org/why_post

[schmarty]
tantek: any new insights?
#
[tantek]
yes. and just about to hit save on a braindump of what I think I've been doing
#
Loqi
yay!
#
[tantek]
I'm trying to capture these behaviors towards the goal of coming up with a more efficient way of doing things, or a UX that actively enables the needs / requirements expressed therein
#
[schmarty]
this is great stuff to capture! reminds me of the recent discussion about "IndieWeb practice". i'd really like to capture more of my own (and see more people write about theirs) in the coming year!
#
[tantek]
TBH I'm doing some serious self-questioning (again) regarding why I publish photos (publicly) at all
#
[schmarty]
definitely good to reflect on!
#
[tantek]
I think I have an empirical list of three reasons (from past brainstorming, intention setting), though I'm not entirely sure about those reasons, both from what they include and what they exclude perspectives
#
[schmarty]
your "selecting" section has me thinking. it's interesting that you post them online as a (mostly-)private archive.
#
[tantek]
I used to use Flickr friends-only photos like that
#
[tantek]
I may get back to doing that at some point
#
[tantek]
but right now my photos-added-to-checkins flow "feels" right to me, even though critically analyzed it looks / seems a bit "odd"
#
[tantek]
reason 1: post positivity to counterbalance all the negativity online. post inspiring photos the way others's photos inspire me, to getup, go outside, explore, do, create, etc.
#
[tantek]
reason 2: post for my close friends and family to easily see what self-care like things I’ve been doing recently. I know I like to see when my family and close friends post photos things they are doing that reflect their authentic selves and taking care of themselves, so I try to do the same. Doing so publicly feels like a public re-affirmation / re-assertion of authentic self-identity, integrity.
#
[schmarty]
for reason 2 - these are the photos-added-to-checkins?
#
[schmarty]
or the public posts that make it to your site?
#
[schmarty]
(or something else?)
#
[tantek]
the third one is emotionally challenging and I'm having trouble with the framing, boundaries, and effectiveness. might have to discuss it off the record in person at an IndieWebCamp or maybe in personal conversations with friends.
#
[schmarty]
totally reasonable!
#
[tantek]
all three reasons are my methodology, reasoning, and motivation for public photo posts
#
[tantek]
the photos-added-to-checkins upload/archival is much broader
#
[tantek]
and contains lots of seemingly mundane things like photos of all the food I order when out
#
[schmarty]
makes sense!
#
[tantek]
which I don't bother to make public photo posts about anymore, only food I make (recent decision in the past year)
#
[tantek]
I've decided to try to minimize "consumption" photos. Look at this awesome thing I'm eating, drinking, wearing, buying, etc.
#
[tantek]
As I said, with the exception of if that thing was something I *made*. like a blueberry pie
#
[tantek]
I'm thinking public conspicuous consumption posting may be a net negative, envy amplifier/propagator etc.
#
[tantek]
For similar reasons + privacy I resist posting public photos of family.
#
[schmarty]
feeling like any write-ups i do for me "IndieWeb practice" should really include a focus on "why".
#
[tantek]
absolutely. "why" is where to start
#
[schmarty]
but it is very hard to nail down!
#
[tantek]
my thoughts are rough and semi-unsorted on such topics currently, which is why I'm scattering them in seemingly appropriate places on the wiki so that maybe others can re-use those bits or draw inspiration while I try to assemble the pieces into a meaningful / cohesive whole for myself.
#
[schmarty]
"why" is the fluid and squishy and the most important.
#
[tantek]
trying to be less judgmental of (self/conceptual) incompleteness
#
[tantek]
it's squishy until it's not and see you a clear reason why
#
[schmarty]
i think even with mental clarity it can be hard to articulate, and is likely to change over time.
#
[tantek]
yes, hard to articulate -> the skill of good writing -> acquired by practicing even if imprecise and iterating
#
[tantek]
likely to change over time -> totally ok, reasons why in a particular moment / week / year / phase of life are still valid in that context and worth expressing as such

I am very similar with my checkins, I avoid the envy machine. I try to keep my checkins related to events, community service, and family.
#
[jgmac1106]
I don't do the food or travel envy related checkins, I could and just make the private for my own archiving purposes
#
[jgmac1106]
Some reasons I may post photos, community photo challenges, like today is Sunday and #clmooc does a silentsunday photo challenge
#
[jgmac1106]
I have kids. It is a genetic default to take too many pictures of kids (has its own ethical issues as who owns right of refusal)
#
[jgmac1106]
I want to work on photography as art, this more recent.
#
[jgmac1106]
and then for storytelling, sometimes I like to tell a story in a collection of posts
#
[jgmac1106]
So I guess my why photo would be 1: community, 2: family, 3: art, 4: storytelling
#
[jgmac1106]
probably should add remixes, though I guess that can fall under 3. Many of the photos I post are remixes of other people's photos

I think I'm going to go to a multisite set-up: moving kimberlyhirsh.com to micro.blog for easy IndieWeb implementation, then getting a Reclaim acct with a new domain name, kimberlyhirsh.net, for all my development experiments/discussion list needs. Thanks for pointing out that micro.blog just works, jgmac1106! I'm looking forward to spending much less of 2020 fighting with WordPress, and much more actually using HTML & CSS.

[kimberlyhirsh] yeah workflow I use, I do Known for what just works and then use my main domain to learn how to build what works
#
[jgmac1106]
You can do a lot with Reclaim, I installed Owncloud got all my media there, added gpx for trip support, may make a private way for family to share photos

@manton, looks like the posts came in beautifully. Featured images didn't come over, but everything else did. It looks great!

I feel bad when the WordPress user base shrinks
#
[kimberlyhirsh]
Sorry GWG. It's not anybody's fault. More about where I'm at right now.
#
GWG
[kimberlyhirsh]: I know. But makes me think I need to figure out how to make it easier to stay
#
[kimberlyhirsh]
I don't know if that's a one-person job. At first, my instinct was to head in that direction - learn theme & plugin development, contribute - but I have neither the bandwidth nor the interest right now. Also, I want to be able to evangelize the IndieWeb to people who are less versed in tech than me, and I am hoping getting really familiar with micro.blog will be a way to do that.

GWG, I feel the same way. At times, when I see myself struggling with my own WP I feel real bad that I can’t recommend it to others.
#
GWG
[prtksxna]: I feel like there is something we can do about that
#
[prtksxna]
GWG: For sure, but with limited time and other commitments progress is slow (and steady 🙂 )
#
[prtksxna]
My work on the indieweb-compliant theme has been slow but its got quite a few users now 🙂
#

I'm making my usual round of updates to different areas.

GWG: don't worry about WordPress indieweb adoption. it's almost certainly still the biggest installed base by far. https://indiemap.org/docs.html#stats
#
[snarfed]
focus on other priorities instead!

[snarfed]
(m.b had definitely grown since those stats 2.5y ago. Known has probably declined a bit.)

I have 4 open PRs awaiting review. And I'm opening more.
#
GWG
I'm going through the plugins that don't show compatibility with the latest WordPress version.
#
GWG
There was a PR on mf2-feed, and I think I'll do a bit more work on that plugin, even though it is a side file system.

#

i hope to get it edited soon, but like i mentioned around this chat on friday, I resulted in a 2000 word post about the IWC plugins and how they relate to familiar WP concepts
#
GWG
[Michael_Beckwit: I am going to work on mf2-feed post your PRs... I need to make some changes that would invalidate them.
#
GWG
But I am incorporating what you did
#

I can elaborate in -wordpress

I need a weekend/alt Twitter and a ‘normal’ Twitter. If only I could subject content to specific timelines/feeds. Simply done on my IndieWeb site!

#
[tantek]
Jacky, re: https://twitter.com/jackyalcine/status/1211384134989422593 I have been considering the need for multiple twitters as well, for various different things. e.g. public (semi-)professional + running, private friends-only (but maybe I'm ok with being public on my site)
#
[tantek]
Note that adactio syndicates to different Twitter accounts depending on post type

Most hidden data is either hidden because I treat it as an easter egg, or because I am still thinking about ways to visually present it
