Good morning IndieWeb from IRC, because my bouncer said it would be a good idea to use it from time to time.

The best way for all of us to fight back against disinformation is to amplify real information. That means fighting back against conspiracy theories, but it also means telling our own stories. What are the police doing near you? If you’re on the front lines, are you protected?

Hi everyone! I'm super happy that I just found out about indieweb
#
swentel
welcome :)
#
zenen
I've been playing with the idea of a "better internet" where everyone is in control of their own information, but the idea of doing it all myself just seemed so overwhelming
#
zenen
it's nice to know that there's other people who've been working on it already!
#
zenen
I'm just out of university and trying to build some kind of roadmap towards working towards these goals
#
swentel
hehe, I had the same idea at some point, glad I found this out too :)
#
zenen
I'm still trying to build up a skillset to become an effective web developer so that I can contribute to projects like these. Could someone provide some tips about how to tackle webdev from an indieweb point of view?
#
zenen
hm, it seems like the Getting Started page has some good info
#
Ryuno-Ki
zenen: Depending on where you feel more comfortable: Backend or Frontend.
#
Ryuno-Ki
Right now, I'd say, most of the implementations are about communication between different servers, parsing HTML and HTTP responses etc.
sscarfe joined the channel
#
Ryuno-Ki
But of course, I can imagine, that nobody would reject a Frontend developer with design aspirations :-)
#
Ryuno-Ki
The programming language shouldn't matter that much: PHP, Python, Node.js, Perl … whatever works for you.
#
zenen
I've been practicing with Django, and I built a simple forum for some people i'll be working with this summer
#
zenen
I'm more comfortable with backend, python definitely feels like home to me while html/css/js are still kind of foreign
#
zenen
I was doing some reading into the Fediverse, would you consider them affiliated with the indieweb movement?
#
[tantek]
Maybe more like subset. "The Fediverse" predominantly refers to a particular set of implementations, including Mastodon, which does implement several IndieWeb building building blocks like microformats and rel-me.
#
[tantek]
zenen, since you're a webdev, I highly encourage you to join the #indieweb-dev channel where more developers hang out
#
zenen
thanks!

anybody know how to get a notification to an android phone without going via the borg? something like webhooks?

#
dckc
there's an indieweb convention for this, yes?
#
dckc
https://indieweb.org/Webmention ? that's not quite as general as webhook, but it would cover my use case, which is: "ding! _jenkins job 1231231_ is done"
#
dckc
what's with the big W3C logo there? Did W3C come to its senses and standardize this?

#

I'm struggling to see how the push api applies here. What do I put where to get my phone to go "ding!" when the Jenkins job (behind a couple layers of enterprise firewall, btw) is done?
#
dckc
in webmention spec: "Sender notifies receiver" which end is which? there's a specific (non-normative) example that's really helpful until somebody decided I get what's going on without the example... but i don't
#
dckc
"For example, the URL at https://waterpigs.example/post-by-barnaby may contain the following HTML that has a link to Aaron's post." which is the sender? which is the receiver?
#
dckc
so Jenkins is Alice... but Jenkins's site is not "set up to receive webmentions"
#
[snarfed]
ah ok yeah. webmention is for notifying web page A that web page B links to it. (and often details, like it's a like, or an rsvp, or a reply with text contents)
#
[snarfed]
it's not really appropriate for either triggering jenkins or sending a push notif to your phone
#
dckc
got a clue for me about Push_API for my scenario?
#
dckc
I'm not trying to trigger jenkins
#
dckc
I'm trying to know when a Jenkins job is done
#
[snarfed]
right, you're trying to have jenkins send a push notif to your phone when a job finishes?
#
dckc
e.g. when "SUCCESS" or "FAILURE" shows up on a page
#
[snarfed]
sure. sounds great! unrelated to wm though. and no, i'm not a Push API expert, sorry
#
[snarfed]
(also we should probably move to #indieweb-dev)
#
[LewisCowles]
dckc, you could just turn on notifications for emails and have jenkins email you when done. Jenkins sends emails.
#
[LewisCowles]
It can also post to slack / irc with plugins

this job is already running, so I can't arrange for email
#
[LewisCowles]
If the job is already running, then no changes will affect anything
#
[LewisCowles]
for the lifetime of a running job; it keeps the specification it was originally run with. Perhaps secrets between steps might change if coming from a network resource
#
[LewisCowles]
but nothing is supposed to change (as an ideal of CI/CD it's repeatable)
