Quick request for opinions: How many here find connecting with the big platforms (Facebook, Twitter, IG, etc.) very important to their personal websites as a feature? How about as a feature in software you're building?

Achieving POSSE
#
[Aaron_Klemm]
at least
[jgarber] and [snarfed] joined the channel
#
[snarfed]
[Aaron_Klemm] historically integration w/silos has been the single most important feature to most community members
#
[snarfed]
for data, see eg indiemap's for # of rel-me links, https://indiemap.org/docs.html#query-example , or u-syndication links (easy to query: https://indiemap.org/docs.html#data-mining )
#
[snarfed]
(polling chat here can be useful but biased since this is a small fraction of the overall community, and tends to be more technical and involved)
#
[tw2113]
POSSE is also usually the easiest to achieve on top of already done a lot of times without realizing it
#
[snarfed]
yup. also POSSE doesn't have to be automated! manual until it hurts. i still POSSE everywhere manually

Is there any indication that things are changing such that folks aren't as keen to make those integrations or insist on having them as new users? I'm leaning towards this idea of just forgetting the big silos and treating them separately. User uptake of Mastodon and certain possibilities in the IndieWeb make me think it's reasonable.
#
[Aaron_Klemm]
Or how about those who came into the IndieWeb figuring that silo integration was critical, but maybe now don't care as much?
#
[Aaron_Klemm]
I'll try to stop the questions with that based on the fact listed above that the channel is likely not representative enough.

[fluffy]
I POSSE via ifttt -> twitter and tumblr, then have a separate autoposter do twitter -> mastodon. It works well enough.
#
[fluffy]
I haven’t found anything that’ll go directly from my site to Mastodon except for a self-hosted bot that uses password rather than token auth.
[grantcodes] joined the channel
#
[Arne]
[fluffy] maybe using a web request in IFTTT?
#
[fluffy]
Hm, not sure how one would set that up.
#
[fluffy]
Really I’d rather set up something that can receive WebSub but that’s quickly drifting into #indieweb-dev territory 🙂
#
[Arne]
just a random thought, I haven't used web requests that way myself, only for webhooks
#
[Arne]
oh yes 😛

Regarding POSSE: Most of my friends are on Facebook, some on Twitter, a few on IndieWeb. I view my IndieWeb presence as a stake in the future but for now if I want to stay connected, I need Facebook and Twitter. I use cut-and-paste and re-post manually.

for what it’s worth, i don’t put share links on my content. in a way i gauge that as a “how much do you really want to send this to the people who follow you”.
