Lots of new user facing features on https://twtxt.net/ that make it generally nicer to use 😎

[KevinMarks] I was just reading that post and some related P2 product material myself. Sounds like a melange of wiki, slack, and workplace productivity. Looks like they're productizing it as another Automattic product: https://wordpress.com/p2/. Looks like it's also got some functionality from https://simplenote.com/ as well.

Years ago, they released a P2 WordPress theme, so I’m curious how this is different other than just wrapping everything together with hosting. I created a new P2 blog to play with it.
#
[manton]
I guess this is the WordPress.com-ification of P2.

I looked at it a couple of years ago... it's basically a theme with some additional functionality built into it. They're going to have to iterate on it a bit to make it into the product I think they're hoping it'll become.
#
[chrisaldrich]
The P2 theme hasn't been updated since 2016... https://wordpress.org/themes/p2/
#
[chrisaldrich]
What is p2?
#
Loqi
P2 is a WordPress theme maintained by Automattic that supports posting from the home page and realtime updates https://indieweb.org/P2
#
[manton]
[chrisaldrich] What kind of Simplenote functionality were you referring to?
#
[manton]
Also, really surprising: you can’t use a custom domain with the new P2, although it sounds like that’s a temporary limitation.

I haven't poked around much in this version yet, but it looks like they've got some of the to do list checkbox stuff from Simplenote (which I think the p2/o2 themes had).
#
[chrisaldrich]
It looks like they're going to do custom domains and eventually a self-hosted version soon too. The interesting part of this is that it looks like it'll also be a private group offering in the mix so that they can compete in that space too.
#
[chrisaldrich]
From what I can tell, this looks like it's built on their prior work, but is a completely new/separate offering. I'm curious to see how the self-hosting infrastructure looks internally compared to a standard WordPress install.

Is there a good service for creating quick photos of text for including into one's personal site or social silos?
#
[chrisaldrich]
Something along the lines of quotebacks, but which is photo-centric rather than text? Use cases would include Voldemorting or cramming more text/context into tweets...
#
[chrisaldrich]
I've used http://pngwriter.com/ like this in the past, but I suspect there may be better/faster tools for this out there.

It's not great, but the principle works and you could adapt it with better design

And of course just after I posted the question, I see this tweet at the top of my feed which is related, but half a lightyear beyond what I could want at the moment: https://twitter.com/readwiseio/status/1291486018634383360
#
@readwiseio
🆕 in Readwise: better OCR highlighting of paper books! 1️⃣ We've improved our text parsing algorithm a lot, meaning fewer typos and less time tweaking passages🤓 2️⃣ You can now make a highlight across multiple pages (see below👇) https://twitter.com/readwiseio/status/1291486018634383360/video/1
(twitter.com/_/status/1291486018634383360)
#
[chrisaldrich]
I think the tougher part is setting up the photos in the right way/aspect ratio so that they display natively on Twitter without needing to resize them or forcing the reader to click on them to read them (unless there's so much text that it's too small to read).
#
[chrisaldrich]
I feel like I've seen things that do this sizing before, but I don't recall where. (I half think it may have been on high.ly which was acquired by Twitter.)
#
[KevinMarks]
Yes, Twitter is a bit weird though it has got better since I first did svgshare
#
[KevinMarks]
It still gives odd crops though
#
[chrisaldrich]
Perhaps this is a use case that [schmarty]'s Kapowski could be adapted for in posting these sorts of image captures via micropub.
#
[chrisaldrich]
[KevinMarks] the added benefit of your glitch version is that the entirety of the design is re-themeable for each use if one liked.
#
[schmarty]
Kapowski actually cheats on image handling by only sending the img URL rather than uploading the file to your micropub (or media) endpoint.
#
[chrisaldrich]
what is submention?
#
Loqi
It looks like we don't have a page for "submention" yet. Would you like to create it? (Or just say "submention is ____", a sentence describing the term)
#
[schmarty]
Corner-cutting is a specialty of mine ✂
#
[chrisaldrich]
It's not corner-cutting, it's a minimal working product moving towards greater control. 🙂
