#@edentFor those who are curious, and don't want to read my whole blog, here's the domain and how it works. https://β §.ο¬/ Twitter doesn't make that clickable, but you can copy and paste it into your browser and it take you to my site. So, here's the science bit... (twitter.com/_/status/1294629107188273153)
#[tantek]And yes itβs more bytes than say ttk.me :)
#[tantek]I also thought the lack of auto linking was an interesting aspect, in case that was a deliberately desired effect
dhanesh95, jonnybarnes, loicm, awolf, nickodd, shoesNsocks, Hory, kensp, KempfCreative, KempfCreative1, seekr, [fluffy], sp1ff, petermolnar, [schmarty], KartikPrabhu and g1 joined the channel; nickodd left the channel
#g1I've just read the "Getting started" section, the paragraph about "Home server" seems to contain plain wrong information.
#g1"Using your own server at home costs more" is wrong to me, a low energy server may last a decade if carefully chosen, it costs a lot less than any web hosting without ads
#g1"and takes more time to set up" is partially wrong. You should look at Yunohost
#g1Moreover, most elements mentioned in "Avoiding problems" still occur when not hosting your content in your own server at home
#g1"Content loss" is still possible when you're not your own host
#GWGCost is not always financial. It costs more in time... although a VPS is probably the same
#GWGBut there is nothing listed as wrong with it, just it is an advanced option for most

#jackythat said, differentiating the cost factor is something that should be highlighted
#jackylike if money's not a problem, then cost looks like spending time
#GWGjacky: Sometimes it costs less if you are already paying for home internet.. so it depends
#GWGHome Internet also is more likely to go down. Although mine is usually rock solid.
#jackyHome internet prices have _never_ gone down for me :/
#JK_nafor what its worth, I've recently moved all of my self-hosted sites, some social media, some chat, some html etc. from VPS to various ARM SBCs and whilst there is certainly an upfront cost and a timesink to get set up it will be more cost efficient (for me) over time (very little, but then digital ocean aren't the cheapest VPS provider) and administering the sites now that they are set up will be the same as previously. But
#JK_nathen I guess this will vary based on varying bandwidth provision from various providers.. mileage will vary I guess.
#JK_na(some indieweb-ish (work in progress!), just incase you were wondering why I'd butt in π)
#cjw6ki have my multimedia-content servers (incl. blog) in the cloud to leverage the low latency and high-bandwidth possibilities of the datacenter. I have my free software source code hosted on my homeserver (gitea) because that is the lowest latency for the primary user. in both cases, I am the server admin. different tools for different jobs.
