ok, I added "https://www.cjr.org/special_report/substackerati.php" to the "See Also" section of /substack https://indieweb.org/wiki/index.php?diff=73599&oldid=72815

I thought that was a really interesting read about platforms in general and elf publishing ^^^
#
jeremycherfas
All my elves are too busy working for that slave-driver Santa
#
jeremycherfas
Totaslly blank page, not even a warning without js. Well, there is a pinkish stripe across the top.
#
Zegnat
Where? The link I gave?

ooooh. goood idea...no elf on the shelf....a super spreader event........
#
Zegnat
Ah, you are right, apparently I had enabled same-domain scripts on cjr.org since before, so I did not notice
#
jeremycherfas
Good read though, you're right.
#
Zegnat
For me the top was white, but when I scrolled down I got the the article as normal. But that still depends on JS, ugh
#
[jgmac1106]
I like snipcart for payments

Morning [jgmac1106] Zegnat

I wish I could figure out a way to have a tiered newsletter, other than making it all available free and subs out of the goodness of your heart
#
jeremycherfas
Which is pretty much my hopeless business model.
#
[jgmac1106]
a lot of my friends just do the early access tiered newsletter or paid access to archives
#
Zegnat
Write a long newsletter, send it out to the top payers, strip some sections, send it out to the rest of the payers, strip some more sections, send it out to the rest of the subscribers.
#
[jgmac1106]
never wanted to try the affiliated links to all the best ingredients and bread gadgets?
#
jeremycherfas
I sort of tried that, zegnat, when I used to put essentially just the links on my site and send my writing about them to subscribers. Didn't seem to do much. Now I promote a new issue on Twitter and point people to the signup page. There might have been a slight uptick.

I confess, I had no idea Substack acted like a real publisher in offering folks an advance.
#
Zegnat
Neither did I. That is a really clever way to get people on board of your platform though.
#
jeremycherfas
Not a member, any more.
#
[jgmac1106]
just an idea thought you were looking at ways to improve inbound conversions, subscribers,
#
[jgmac1106]
28,000 results this month for "baking bread"
#
jeremycherfas
It would be a good idea, if I were interested in using LI as a promo platform. But I have a hard enough time exposing myself on Twitter, FB and IG.
#
jeremycherfas
The bigger point is, bread is already very well covered. Of course, I most need to get off my bum and finish my little book.
#
[jgmac1106]
i have moved to doing more promotion on LinkedIn rather than Twitter, and while it hurts marketing I quit FB
#
jeremycherfas
I've mostly given up on FB, but I still use IG because I like it.
#
[jgmac1106]
why not do that as subscription, many people release a book a chapter a time to subscribers?
#
[jgmac1106]
yeah IG for foodies for sure, never tried IG so don't know anythign about it
#
[jgmac1106]
I like well covered bread, jams and butter and nutella
#
jeremycherfas
First look at the book for subscribers is no 2 on my list of things to do.

I wonder how easy it is for writers with Substack to get their copy back in the event that, say, they lose everything locally and don't have a backup?
#
sebbu
everybody should have a backup, both locally and not (what happen in case of IRL accident, fire, innoundation, etc...)
