that article [tantek] added to Pinterest recently - https://find.yourweirdos.com/posts/the-quiet-giant - raises some really interesting questions, mainly the: "As it turns out, there are a whole lot of weirdos out there in search of inspiration, and of self-expression through collecting" quote. When I started doing a website in ~99, it was a collection of stuff I found interesting at the time. From an indieweb perspective, this is rath

er out of focus for our usual goals/approach/etc, but it made me think that what if our primary directive should emphasie self-expression more, than anything with data, or privacy.

(yes, this is a topic that's both for this channel and for indieweb-meta)

not sure it's really out of focus.

well, I guess us who talk about it more talked about private archives than public recently

I collect quotes: https://quickthoughts.jgregorymcverry.com/tag/quote and bookmarks but started a wiki because it didn't fit a stream building collections and stuff, more organized weirdness

said from the get go there are two steps to IndieWeb. Get a blog. Bring a passion
#
[jgmac1106]
"primary directive should emphasie self-expression more" is my primary goal
#
jeremycherfas
An emphasis on self-expression requires tools that allow you to do that, and as a silo, Pinterest is great at that. As was Tumblr.
#
petermolnar
> Get a blog - this is one of the problems: self-expression has nothing to do with blogs.
#
petermolnar
correction:
#
petermolnar
a site/place/etc to self-express, or to show interest, doesn't have to be a blog in terms of web-log.
#
petermolnar
Zegnat's h-card monster is a good example.
#
jeremycherfas
I agree. And the "reverse chronological" part of the original idea of a web log isn't a requirement either.
#
[Raphael_Luckom]
As someone who is totally out of the loop: why do people talk about tumblr in the past tense? It seems to still be allowing signups, has something about it changed?
#
[jgmac1106]
I know I am using word blog as a catch all for "quickly add content to my site". The kids I work with don't care about chronology, it is chronological bc it is. To them it is just content
#
[jgmac1106]
tumblr is still all the rage, it just is a good estimate of someone's age and/or participation in niche stan communities,

Came across this poem "Unfold your own myth" as a good definition of IndieWeb a stanza: https://quickthoughts.jgregorymcverry.com/2020/11/27/but-dont-be-satisfied-with-stories-how

[Greg McVerry] "But don’t be satisfied with stories, how things have gone with others. Unfold your own myth, without complicated explanation, so everyone will understand the passage, We have opened you." -Rumi #quotes

[Raphael_Luckom]: who's talking about tumblr in past tense? Though the reason could be that since it was sold to Automattic, there isn't much of a word about it.
#
[Raphael_Luckom]
jeremycherfas, above: "As was Tumblr"
#
[jgmac1106]
to me it Tumblr still has one of the best social publishing tools, though reshares as content get tiresome
#
[Raphael_Luckom]
I like that quote. Rumi can always be counted on for a banger.
#
jeremycherfas
It is in the past tense for me because I have been totally unable to recover my account, despite jumping through endless hoops. Therefore, I have no idea what it is like now.
