what is knitting
#

It looks like we don't have a page for "knitting" yet. Would you like to create it? (Or just say "knitting is ____", a sentence describing the term)
#
[tantek]
wait I thought we had a page for that

there was that one tweet about knitting and indieweb site customizing
#
@kevinmarks
Take something 1-dimensional, zigzag it into a 2D manifold to cover a 3D object. Computationally mind bending. We call this tech “knitting”.

Look out for the undercover geometers that can do this with 2 pointy sticks while holding a conversation.

I have come to suspect that slowly redesigning your website (forever) provides almost exactly the same kind of light absorption & calm satisfaction as knitting or embroidery

I wonder if we could set off an inter-framework contest like https://hnpwa.com/ for social readers…

I'm curious - is there an independent OpenID signin that people use? I expect people here use Web sign-in. And maybe some people use the corporate players like Google or GitHub to sign into sites... but is there something else out there?
#
aaronpk
like indieauth?
#
schmudde
Indeed, like IndieAuth (sorry - I was calling it Web sign-in because of this wiki article: https://indieweb.org/Web_sign-in).
#
aaronpk
web sign-in is the overall concept of using your own website to sign in, indieauth and openid 1 are specific ways to do that
#
schmudde
Thanks for the clarification.
#
schmudde
But I wasn't sure if anyone else was providing a credential. For example, a single credential I can use across the Fediverse.
#
schmudde
I mean... a single ID... not credential.
#
aaronpk
indieauth would fit very well in that model, I gave a talk at activitypub conference about it

And I'm hoping the support grows. I'm also wondering what else is out there that people are using.
#
schmudde
I'm working on an ID system and we do plan to support IndieAuth. So I hope to contribute to its growth.
#
aaronpk
i've seen plenty of home-grown oauth providers too, the problem is without the consistent identity layer every client has to hardcode specific logic for each provider
#

gitea, gogs, mastodon, etc
#
aaronpk
i'm curious to learn more about what you're building, but we should probably take that to #indieweb-dev

swentel, [eddie] I'd really like discuss and see if we can find some consensus on renaming Indigenous in 2021. I thought I'd raised this as an issue on the wiki but can't find it right now. Only record I've found is from some HWC discussion: https://indieweb.org/events/2020-08-05-hwc-west-coast#Topics

+1 to renaming it!
#
[tantek]
one way to make progress is to agree on where to discuss this so we can gather & iterate on reasoning, opinions, alternatives etc. it didn't feel quite right to put it on the main /Indigenous page in an "Issues" section but perhaps that's a necessary start and we can create separate pages as needed?
#
[tantek]
bringing this up here in the main channel because as a "flagship" example of IndieWeb Social Readers, it feels pretty impactful as part of the modern IndieWeb "experience", beyond what we might relegate to #indieweb-meta. That being said, if folks think meta is more appropriate, I'm also ok with moving the discussion there.
#
[tantek]
swentel, do you have any strong preferences or thoughts about where/how to discuss it? on /Indigenous and here in #indieweb or in #indieweb-meta?
#
swentel
no real strong thoughts about it tbh
#
swentel
I'm actually thinking to try and find another maintainer, since I've now launched the Drupal reader
#
swentel
so, a new maintainer, and a new new would make a lot of sense and a good fresh new start
#
aaronpk
oh interesting, are you switching to a web based reader experience built into drupal then?
#
swentel
aaronpk, yep, that's what the post is about from a few hours ago on indienews
#
swentel
I'll have more help with the Drupal part than I'll ever have with Android/iOS, the barrier to help out there is much lower
#
swentel
and my iOS knowledge is fading away very fast too :)

[eddie]
Hey all. I'm fine with renaming Indigenous. It's kind of in a "unsupported" state right now, but I'm happy to go through some Apple loopholes to try to rename it. I would say, I don't feel that "misappropriation" is the right term, as the word indigenous is an adjective with many meanings.
#
[eddie]
It wasn't named or given the purpose of claiming to be about or related to "indigenous people" (where people are the noun), but instead that it is "innate; inherent; natural" to the iOS platform. Which is a legitimate definition of the word.
#
[eddie]
That said, while it's not misappropriation, I do think it can be not as thoughtful, as I would appreciate it to be
#
[eddie]
I have had thoughts of renaming it in the past, due to the misconceptions it could create for people
#
[eddie]
My long term plan (if I ever get the time) is to replace it with more focused individual apps, which would be named for their purposes (remark, chronicler, anthologist)
#
[eddie]
In the short term, I don't have any great ideas for a name replacement, but if I think of something or if you all have ideas, I'm happy to go through those Apple logistics to get it renamed
