I'm wondering if there is a better format/way I can do posts of classic items, such as old photos.

Depends on how you frame the problem GWG

[tantek]
GWG, I feel like we have talked about this
#
[tantek]
what is a throwback
#
Loqi
A throwback is a current post of content from some time ago, typically at least days, often years https://indieweb.org/throwback
#
GWG
Yes, but not design
rawtext joined the channel
#
GWG
visual elements
#
[tantek]
do you have an example of a classic photo post like that?
#
[tantek]
so we can look at your current visual design?
#
GWG
No different than a current photo
#
GWG
Although my photo presentation could always use work

[David Shanske] For the last day of Chanukah, I dug into the archives for this polaroid. https://david.shanske.com/wp-content/uploads/2020/12/Untitled-125.jpg
#
[tantek]
thanks GWG, I added your example with some observations: https://indieweb.org/throwback#David_Shanske
#
GWG
[tantek]: I want to think about improving the appearance of my photo posts in general and my old ones in specific.. what I might add
#
[tantek]
GWG, makes sense. noted your question in brainstorming and feel free to add more thoughts! https://indieweb.org/throwback#Design
#
GWG
I'd also like to look into a photo grid
[KevinMarks] joined the channel
#
[KevinMarks]
you could put a vintage filter on the throwbacks, or photo corners
#
GWG
[KevinMarks]: How do you do photo corners?
#
[KevinMarks]
well you could make them look they're in a scrapbook, or have the white borders polaroids or old prints have
#
gRegorLove
Neat idea
#
GWG
By editing the photo, or some css trick?
#
gRegorLove
CSS I'd imagine
#
[KevinMarks]
that kind fo thing, I was thinking yes. You can do 'aged' photos with css filters too, though thats a bit odd
#
GWG
How do you do a photo grid?
#
KartikPrabhu
using CSS grid
#
KartikPrabhu
or flexbox
#
[tantek]
GWG, you could likely find some old style (physical) photo albums in various crafts stores, maybe like a Michael's, and then use that as inspiration for an online "grid"
#
[jgmac1106]
@gwg sorry I did not mean to leave you hanging
#
[jgmac1106]
flexbox is most dead simple way, how I teach my students to make grids to start: https://jgmac1106edu106.glitch.me/myportfolio.html
#
GWG
[jgmac1106]: I may play with that for my theme first
#
[tantek]
not sure you can jump to the mechanics (flexbox etc.) of a visual design without first having an idea what you want it to look like
#
GWG
And maybe figure a highlight or frame for certain photos
#
[tantek]
code-first is kind of an anti-pattern for visual designs
#
[jgmac1106]
yeah true...and I make them draw everything on paper first should have started there
#
[tantek]
^ exactly
#
[jgmac1106]
first day of class you get three blank pieces of paper...by the end it should be your website...was harder in COVID
#
GWG
I know what I want for a grid
#
[jgmac1106]
but are you going to do it in WordPress? Can you add grid to a theme easily?
#
[jgmac1106]
oops to devy back to thinking about the desing
#
GWG
[jgmac1106]: Yes, custom archive for taxonomies
#
[tantek]
haha the cover is a bit cliché on this one however it's worth looking inside at the layout they have for a mix of portrait and landscape photo prints: https://www.michaels.com/silver-happiness-photo-album-by-recollections/10409579.html
#
GWG
So, this would be for /kind/photo
#
[jgmac1106]
here is mine: https://jgregorymcverry.com/iwcnyc2019 gRegor is better at the landscape v portrait stuff. He and schmarty are who I copied
#
[jgmac1106]
sorry about the line spacing, still playing with my typography....that is one design I can't translate well from what I want to reality
#
KartikPrabhu
[tantek]: by grid I assumed it was a literal grid, hence I suggested CSS Grid or flexbox
#
KartikPrabhu
if you want fancier designs then you might have to sketch it on paper. I do it directly in CSS for my photos
#
[tantek]
KartikPrabhu he was asking in the context of old (style) photos which have more of a "loose" grid, e.g. masonry layout
#
KartikPrabhu
[tantek]: the example link I gave does use a masonry layout
#
GWG
I want a simple design, and I can tweak/improve it later
#
KartikPrabhu
see^ the simplest is a Grid from the css-tricks link I posted
#
[jgmac1106]
Gwg I put my idea into dev
