I haven't tried it yet, but there's a new IndieWeb friendly WordPress theme in the official repository with microfomats support: https://wordpress.org/themes/velox/

Great
#
[tantek]
[KevinMarks] it was social software / social networks, and then Peter Hirshberg coined "conversational media" at Technorati. At some point after that, it evolved into "social media"
#
[tantek]
(at least I'm pretty sure Peter coined it. he may have also picked up on it from someone else at Technorati and then amplified it. he definitely made it a "thing" in all the talks he gave)

It's still "social network" in Russian ^^

Okay, finished up my health tracking for now with a few changes today. Now I report on global historical metrics too, with min/max/average visualization. https://cleverdevil.io/health
#
[cleverdevil]
I still need to make it responsive.
#
[cleverdevil]
I am particularly pleased with the gradients on the min/max/average bars. The gradient matches the thresholds so they’re all unique. Pretty cool :)

I just taught WordPress to display permalinks with an ISO ordinal date order for no particular reason.

I got feedbck on last week's hwc americas from Sam one of the new attendees. paraphrasing, he would have liked more q&a with newbies about what htey want to get out of HWC / indieweb.
#
maxwelljoslyn
I feel we are usually pretty welcoming but maybe that got swept awayin our high turnout of regulars
#
GWG
maxwelljoslyn: If he comes back next week we'll do better

Yes we will. and onward into the future

"post"?
[scojjac] joined the channel
#
[scojjac]
we could co-opt yeet
#
sebsel
Well, fwiw: I have tried to read less on Twitter and focus on my blog more, and I ended up writing longer stuff. So yes, for me, "post" is the right word.
#
[KevinMarks]
what is a note?
#
Loqi
A note is a post that is typically short unstructured* plain text, written & posted quickly, that has its own permalink page https://indieweb.org/note
#
sebsel
"post" means "write something on your own site", "tweet" means "scream into the stream"
#
[KevinMarks]
isn't that the tweet equivalent?
#
aaronpk
tweets can also have photos and videos, so "note" doesn't capture that exactly

#
aaronpk
but no i don't think we really need a cutesy name for tweet
#
sebsel
hm, I disagree. It's enabling inter-site comments, that feels different to me. Also, there is no requirement :)
#
aaronpk
right, the posts can exist regardless of webmention or microformats
#
Loqi
btrem, aaronpk: we try to keep dev talk out of this channel, can you move to #indieweb-dev?
#
[scojjac]
@btrem the answer to that is no. you'll see microblog, micropost, post, note ... and really, a "tweet" is just a branded type of post, yeah? IndieWeb is supposed to be more capable and more flexible than any siloed option, so I think there's a bit of an aversion to trying to exactly match something like a tweet
#
aaronpk
i'm trying loqi
#
sebsel
lol @ yeet
#
[scojjac]
Because I like wordplay and jokes. haha
#
aaronpk
no loqi is just getting mad at me mentioning microformats
#
aaronpk
but as far as what's "agreed upon" (which barely is even a thing), that's captured on the wiki https://indieweb.org/posts#Types_of_Posts
#
[scojjac]
Oh yeah, it took me a minute to realize Loqi was a bot - I wasn't sure how to take him the first time
#
sebsel
gives Loqi a microformat
#
Loqi
laughs at the microformat
#
[KevinMarks]
if you use autolink you can get photos and video in notes too
#
Loqi
An autolink is a hyperlink that was automatically added to some text to link that text to an obvious or useful destination, like hyperlinking a URL in plaintext to the URL itself, linking hashtags to search results, and @-names to their profile pages https://indieweb.org/autolink
#
aaronpk
yeah i would say things like "post from your website"
#
aaronpk
depends on the context
#
sebsel
also, the words "tweet" and "tweep" are not invented my Twitter, they are (like the hashtag btw) invented by Twitter users. I guess some word will come up at some point, but no, nothing new has stuck.
#
sebsel
To me "post" is fine for now
#
sebsel
ahh! so you're looking for a word to put in your URL?
#
sebsel
I decided not to put post-types in the URL because I read somewhere that aaronpk had bad experiences with it
#
sebsel
what is URL design?
#
Loqi
URL design is the practice of deliberately designing URLs, in particular, permalinks, typically for a better UX for everyone who creates, reads, and shares content https://indieweb.org/URL_design

👋 Hello, IndieWeb :)
#
sebsel
I even have links for likes. That's how webmentions work. But yes, it feels a bit much sometimes.
#
aaronpk
every post (note, photo, like, etc) kind of needs its own URL if you want things to work with webmention
#
sebsel
No I mean for likes I post myself.
#
aaronpk
this is now getting into #indieweb-dev territory, but you'll need to tell the thing you're sending the webmention to what the URL of your post is so it can go look it up
#
sebsel
I don't post them that often anymore, but this is an example https://seblog.nl/2020/10/13/1/like
#
Loqi
[Sebastiaan Andeweg] Seb vindt een post van iA Inc. leuk.
#
aaronpk
you can of course mix your replies and likes and articles all into one page/feed if you want, but that's a separate issue than whether each of your posts has a permalink
#
sebsel
hm yea better to hop to #indieweb-dev if we're going in depth on how to do stuff
#
[scojjac]
@Btrem I was thinking if you replace ‘tw’ in tweet with ‘i’ (for indieweb), the ‘ie’ combo would make a ‘y’ sound, thus “yeet”. Plus yeeting is throwing, and you’re kind of throwing your ideas out into the void
#
sebsel
it's a novel word
KartikPrabhu joined the channel
#
aaronpk
aha yes this is a great user-focused example of why permalinks are useful
#
sebsel
also: URLs are not that expensive, you can have quite a few
#
sebsel
probably bad for your SEO but hey it's my site I don't care
#
[KevinMarks]
the old answer was to link to an id on your month page
#
Loqi
btrem: can you move the tech talk to #indieweb-dev to keep this channel more inclusive and inviting?
